【解题技巧】

推测上文的内容:关注第一段,特别是开始几句话。

10 In this article, I'll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of

clothing, the child's failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is— politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they'll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

A. Causes for the parent-teen conflicts. B. Examples of the parent-teen war.

C. Solutions for the parent-teen problems. D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.

M: I’m afraid I don’t have an extra one. Would a pencil do?

(Text 3)

M: Did you come to work in time?

W: No, I came late because my car broke down on the way.

(Text 4)

W: Did you see the movie on Channel 6 last night? It was really wonderful.

M: No, I missed. I went shopping with my mother.

(Text 5)

M: Hi, Betty, this is for you. Happy birthday!

W: Thank you. You couldn’t have chosen any gift better for me.

(Text 6)

W: You look worried. Tom, what’s wrong with you?

M: The wheels of my car are gone.

W: Oh. I can’t believe it. How’s that possible?

M: I left the car outside yesterday evening. I thought I’d got it in later. But I completely forgot to bring it in after supper.

W: Did you really? It seems surprising.

M: I’m sorry. I’m terribly sorry.

W: Oh, that’ s all right. Call the police station. And they can help you.

M: Good idea! Thank you.

(Text 7)

W: Oh, Tim! What happened to you?

M: It isn’t anything serious.

W: It’s serious enough for you to be here.

M: Just a little too much smoke. I’ll be back home this evening.

W: How did this happen?

M: I had to go into a house that was on fire. There was still someone inside.

W: Did you get him out?

M: It was a little girl. Yes, I got her out.

W: But there was a lot of smoke.

M: Yes, a lot. I had some trouble breathing so they sent me here just for the doctors to take a look at me.

W: And now you tell me that it’s all part of the job.

M: Well, it is. You shouldn’t worry all the time.

W: But I do. I hope you’ll leave your job.

M: Leave my job? No, not because of a little smoke. I’m really all right.

(Text 8)

M: Hey, Ellen, how are you?

W: I’ m fine, Bob. Aren’t you glad that the term is over?

M: Yeah. Are you going to the rock concert tonight?

W: I haven’t thought much about it. Are you?

M: Sure. Would you like to go with me?

W: Sounds like fun.

M: It’s time for supper. Why don’t we go out to dinner together first ?

W: You’ve got a good idea! Let’s go now!

(Text 9)

M: Hello, Joan. Why are you late today? You are never late for work.

W: No, I never am, but...

M: Wow! Your coat’s very dirty! Did you fall?

W: Yes, 1 had a terrible experience on the underground train. Listen to this! A man came up to me and pulled out a knife. He pointed it right at me!

M: Oh, no! Are you all right? Did he hurt you?

W: No, he didn’t hurt me, but he took my handbag.

M: Then what happened? What did you do?

W: I caught hold of his knife, and he pushed me to the floor.

M: Oh, no! Why did you catch hold of his knife? That’s dangerous.

W: I don’t know. I didn’t think.

M: And what did the other passengers do? Did they help you?

W: Yes, they did. Two men ran after the robber and held him.

M: Did the police come?

W: Yeah. The conductor called a policeman, and he took the robber to the police station. M: What a story! Thank God you’re all right.

(Text 10)

You may think that America is a free country and Americans kiss their friends. Well, it is, but if you kiss the wrong person, you might get into trouble. This is what happened to John, a six-year-old primary pupil.

Who did he kiss? He kissed a girl on the cheek in school. They were in the same class. However, a teacher saw it and told the headmaster, who thought that John should be punished.

John was told to leave his classroom and stay in another classroom by himself. When John’s mother knew this, she was very angry. She wanted the headmaster to tell her why the school should punish her son for kissing another six-year-old girl. “The girl asked him to kiss her and he did this only to show friendship. What’s wrong with this?” she said.

The headmaster thinks that a boy kissing a girl is wrong, even though they are only six years old. “It is clearly stated in the student handbook. It is unwelcome behavior, ”the headmaster said.
