Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention please? Our topics are the same tonight, but not the same on the content. Because we everybody are different from each other, so I am gonna tell you something about myself,-the man standing in front you, who’s nick name is Uncle Black. And now let me tell you something about this nick name.

During Labor’s day holiday, I traveled to Shanghai with my friends. One thing gave me inspiration of this speech today. On our way back to school, two foreigners had some arguments about seats on CRH with an old lady. Of course, they were not going well because of the language barrier. But no one was going to help them, they just sit tight on their seat, train attendant were busy on something in another carriage. So I just went to them, and help them figure that little issue, quick and clean. That thing recalled me of the process I learned English a decade ago.

When I was young, or when I was a boy. I’m already in this dark skin. I don’t know why. And to be honest, it does no help if I know how it happened. But my classmate always laugh on my dark skin, they call me Negro or African. You cannot imagine how hurt it is when they point out my defect in public. What can I do is nothing, I was thin and weak. How weak was I? I went to hospital weekly; the doctor even could recognize me. Every time he saw me, he would say: hello, you are late this time. Patients around me may thought I got some incurable diseases that I have to go to hospital everyday. What’s more important is that my family was outlander to Shanghai. Thanks to my parents. The schools I attended were council schools, so my classmates were all local people. We were poor. We were weak to this strange city. We dare not say no when our rights were violate. From then on, a seed started to sprout –to win the respect of Shanghai. That was my dream.

Since then, I started learning English hard. I practice English every morning. I recite vocabulary, paragraph and articles. At first, I cannot even read English fluently. Every time I read English, my classmates cannot help laughing, taunting on my poor pronunciation. But I kept it as a habit. One year later, I became one of the students who were good at English. The first time I communicate with foreigner friend was about my junior high school, that friend was the racer of McLaren team-Kimi Matias Raikkonen, whose nick name is Kimi.

During my high school, I worked as English monitor for three years, I found Uncle Black English learning group, just like English Lover’s Club. I helped a lot of classmates learning English effectively, that was the most honorable thing I have did in my opinion.

English was my favorite subject until I entered college. Zero to Hero, I started to learn law. Life is not always smooth. So I have another dream today, make some change to our state’s law system. 1、Something about writing

Listening, speaking, reading and writing are four basic pillars in the study of every language. English is no exception.

Listening and speaking focus on the comprehension and reaction of oral languages. You must digest the information you hear in a very short time and have a immediate response accordingly. Writing refers to expressing and constructing your ideas in a written form, perhaps allowing you more time to think about and organize your language. Reading means on one hand, you can read more books, passages and something like that; on the other hand, you can speak out according to some written texts with right tones and accurate pronunciation meanwhile. It doesn’t matter which skill you develop first. The most important thing is that you can rely on one aspect you are good at to develop the others and finally make progress in all the four skills as an integrated unit. By saying this I mean, the four aspects are different from each other but they are bounded closely together. Noticing this in the study, I think my English can flourish day by day through proper methods.

I prefer to concentrate my writing skills first. Here I got some experience in the communication with foreigners. I play the piano in Kilin Crown Hotel where I often meet some foreign friends. But I always find that the thinking pattern of our Chinese is sharply different from theirs’. Sometimes it has become an obstacle for communication. As I think, English is more logical than Chinese in the structure and pattern of a text, based on their own born nature of the two languages. This feature can be reflected on the speaking and listening. So I think improving writing is a solution for this problem because thus we have more time to fully digest and comprehend the language, and think how English ideas are constructed and organized. I want to make my language more frequent, accurate, logical and colorful. So English writing is my big concern now.

2、My English writing plans

As I think, writing is an important aspect in the study of English. To improve my writing skills, I make a plan as follows:

First, I should put priority on enlarging the vocabulary because words are the basic units of sentences, paragraphs and passages. Besides, proper dictation can make my writing more interesting and persuasive. I may not adopt traditional methods to memorize the words. Instead, I will find new ways for that. For example, I can read more English newspapers, like China Daily, and watch more English programs. Thus I can get more fresh words and the new expressions.

Second, it is necessary to master the basic grammatical knowledge. Once I thought grammar is useless in language study. But as I go further in English study, I begin to realize that grammar is to English what rules to a football match. It is necessary to know according to what the sentences are formed and organized. I will carefully make an analysis on the habits of English expressions to enrich my language and make the expressions more colloquial.

Third, practice makes perfect. I must grasp every opportunity to improve my writing. For example, I can write journals on my blog. I think it is two-folded. On one hand, I can communicate with my friends. On the other hand, I can get my writing skill well trained. As a whole process, I won’t give up on the enhancement of listening, speaking and reading.

Through the methods above, I hope to get an overall development on my English writing.

3、Are schools necessary?

As I think, schools are necessary and they have been and are playing an important role in the history of human beings.

First of all, human is a socially cooperative creature. In the ancient time, human has to learn every skill to survive. People get knowledge first from their own experience and then from their own kind and the animals, sometimes even the Mother Nature. As time develops, human needs some people who can teach certain knowledge and skills in order to spread their civilization to the next generation. As the population grows, it is necessary to build a place for the teaching activity. The original school forms from here. So I think schools are used for surviving at the beginning.

Second, the modern schools are now becoming melting spots for various kinds of knowledge. People can meet their needs in various subjects, like language, math, history, geography, art and so on. The schools can broaden our horizons and give us sharp eyes to see the world.

Third, schools can provide an opportunity for us to learn how to get along well with the people around us. Right here, we build our character and forge our temper. We make our friends here. We get improved both in mind and in body. School life can be colorful with various student activities and exciting parties. Everyone may label it with different words, but no one would deny it’s unforgettable and precious. We learnt to hold on our dreams and never give up.

Last but not least, with the knowledge we obtain from schools, we should confidently step into the society. That needs us to combine the knowledge with the actual practice together. In fact, the society can be regarded as a huge school covering everyone where we can’t slow down the steps of learning because it is a lifelong process.

4、The contrast of piano and electronic organ

I play the piano from a very early age. So I am very familiar with piano and I have a special love for it. Now let me say something about the contrast between the piano and the electronic organ.

The piano can be traced back to two hundred years ago. At the beginning, it is just a piece of keyboard instrument which can make different sounds according to the different press. The players can have a control on the strength that the hammer hit the string so it can produce both pianissimo and fortis. The piano got its present name here. But later it is abbreviated wrongly as “piano” in Spanish which is still in use today. Though born in Italy, the piano flourished in Germany, Austria and Britain. It was first invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori in 1709. The piano can produce abundant of sounds and tones which can make the music more vivid and beautiful.

As time goes on and science develops, the electronic organ is invented on the basis of piano. Its sounds are produced by electricity which are simplex without any special character. The electronic organ can mistaken the press of your finger, so it is not fit for the training. If you play the electronic organ too much, you cannot control the press on the key very well when dealing with the piano. Base on that, the green hands are suggested to play the piano rather than the electronic organ.

The difference of tone between the piano and the electronic organ is based on the way they are making sounds. But the main reason lies in their different inner devices. The electronic organ relies on the wave to produce sounds while the piano makes its sounds by the hit of pieces of wood to the copper string. And the three pedals at the bottom of the piano can assist in producing more colorful tones. Furthermore, the piano can produce purer and more beautiful sounds. That’s why the piano is usually more expensive than the electronic organ.
