A

Tim knew his father was a busy lawyer who worked at most nights and weekends. So he was not surprised but disappointed when his father didn’t attend his last soccer game of the season.

’s work to ask, “ How much do lawyers make?” Angrily his father answered, “My clients pay me $300 an hour.” Tim said in surprise, “Wow! That’s a lot. Would you lend me $100?” “Of course not,” his father said. “Just let me work, please!”

Moments later, he heard his son sobbing(啜泣)in another room, so he called him back. “Son, I’m sorry! If you really need some money, of course I’ll lend it to you, but can I ask why you need it?”

Tim said, “Well, I’ve saved $200 , and if you lend me a hundred, I’ll have enough.” “Enough for what?”

“I want to buy an hour of your time so that you can come to our banquet on Friday and see me get the most valuable player award. Will you come?”

The father felt hurt in his heart after he heard his son’s words. For the first time, he realized that none of his clients needed him as much as his son and that nothing he could do as a lawyer was more important than what he could do as a father.

School is out and you have the next two months to enjoy a stress-free summer break. You don’t need to worry about getting up early, rushing to and from classes, finishing homework and studying for tests. However, what can you fill your days with? Here are some fun activities for you to choose from.

Joining a team Whether you like to play team sports such as football, go on hikes in the wilderness or take part in a quiet game of chess, you can find others who enjoy the same activities you do. By joining these groups and teams and attending their events, you can both spend your time doing what you enjoy and make new friends.

Getting a job Why waste time sitting around the house when you can make some money? Look around your neighborhood for part-time jobs. A few ideal options are babysitting, lawn mowing, house-cleaning, lifeguard and retail(零售). You can also browse online at sites, such as craigslist.com.

Picking up a hobby If you have always wanted to build a remote controlled vehicle, learn how to create graphic design, you can use the summer break to do so. With lots of homework and after-school activities during the school year, you don’t have enough time to pick up a new hobby. However, about two months of summer break gives you time to learn something new and interesting.

Making something If you enjoy making things, then spend the summer break to make something you can be proud of. Not only can you make things to spend free time, but you can put your products to use. For example, if you build a doll house, give it to your little sister as her next birthday present, or paint a family portrait to decorate the wall.

46. Which of the following is the best activity for you if you are a sports lover? A. Joining a team B. Getting a job C. Picking up a hobby

D. Making something

47. How do we understand “You can also browse online at sites, such as craigslist.com.” in

Paragraph 3?

A. You can look for a job on the Internet. B. You can surf the Internet. C. You can chat on the Internet.

D. You can sell things on the Internet. 48. According to the text, if you want to make some money, you can do the following EXCEPT _____. A. look after children when their parents are not home. B. clean the house

C. mow the lawn D. help people buy something 49. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to find a job?

B. How to develop a hobby?

C. How to make friends?

D. How to avoid summer break boredom?

C

In the mid 1990s, people started doing business on the Internet. At that time, there are two kinds of companies. First, there were traditional companies. They sold things in stores. Then there were Internet companies. They didn’t have a store, and they only sold things on the Net.

Traditional companies didn’t want to lose any business. Quickly they made their own websites and began selling things on the Net. These are the so-called “brick and click” companies. Many stores are made of brick.. And you click on your mouse to buy things with your computer. That’s where the name “brick and click” comes from.

By the late 1990s, e-businesses like amazon.com, buy.com and etoys.com were in trouble. Their profits (利润) were not very high. Competition was great. Many of these businesses were losing lots of money. In 2000, many e-businesses went out of business.

Why are “brick and click” companies, like Barnes and Noble, Toys RVs and Wal-mart, so successful? First, many customers know and trust their names. Their websites like walmart.com. are easy to remember. These companies also have lots of experience. They know how to run a successful business.

In the world of e-commerce, companies are fighting for every dollar and every customer. Will “brick and click” companies win the war? Only time will tell. 50. Which of the following would be a “brick and click” company? A. A restaurant. B. A clothing company with no website. C. A bookseller with five stores and a website. D. A video seller with a big website but no stores.

51. What gave Internet companies lots of trouble in the late 1990s? A. Heavy competition. B. They were short of money. C. They didn’t know what to do.

D. People didn’t believe in them.

52. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. All the “brick and click” companies run a successful business.

B. “brick and click” companies are certain to win the business competition. C. It is uncertain whether “brick and click” companies will win the competition.

D. Both “brick and click” companies and Internet companies will be successful in the future.

D

In the United States, both men and women usually smile and shake hands when they meet. Good friends and family members may embrace, especially after they have been away from each other for a long time. In casual situations, people may wave hands instead of shaking hands, and they may also greet strangers on the street by saying “hello” or “good morning”. Among young people, various hand slapping gestures, such as the “high five”, are common. When greeted with “how are you”, Americans “fine, thanks”. And any further answer to the question is not expected unless they are close to each other.

Americans do not usually stand very close to each other when talking, keeping about an arm’s length away. However, they may touch one another on the arm or shoulder during the conversation. It is common for couples to hold hands or show affection in public.

Visiting friends and families plays a big part in social life in the United States. And people usually travel long distances to do so. People are expected to be on time even when invited to someone’s house. However, if a guest is late, the hosts will feel OK if they have been told of the delay in advance. Guests are expected to feel at home, sit where they like and enjoy themselves during the visit. Gifts are not necessary when visiting, but many guests usually bring flowers or wine when invited. As for close friends, they may offer, or be asked, to bring some food for the meal.

53. This text mainly tells us about ______ in the United States. A. how to greet others B. making friends C. some social customs

D. how to visit friends

54. The underlined word “respond” in the first paragraph means ______. A. reply B. talk

C. express D. show

55. When you meet someone for the first time, you may say “________”. A. Who are you? B. Fine, thanks. C. Hello. D. Have you had your meal?

56. When talking with an American, you ought to _______ according to the passage?

A. speak in a low voice. B. look at him/her in the eyes C. hold hands with him/her

D. stand an arm’s length away

E

A millionaire took some of his friends yachting(乘快艇). They passed a deserted island, where a man with a long beard and tattered(破的) cloths stood, waving his arms and screaming in their direction.

“Who is that?” asked one friend.

“I don’t know,” said the host, “but every time we sail by, he goes crazy.”

That may be an exception(例外) to a universal rule, which is that most people are happy to help if they can. But there is another universal principle, which is, unless you are stranded(被困)on a deserted island, you are probably reluctant to ask for help, especially from a stranger.

I recently learned that the word “mayday” has nothing to do with the month of May. Instead, it comes from the French word “m’aidez”, which means “help me”. But it is used only as a last resort. The plane is nose-diving. The ship is fatally wounded. “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” a voice screams over the radio. If help doesn’t arrive quickly, all will be lost.

We laugh at the opinion that men are famously bad about asking for directions. But, in truth, most people do not easily ask for help that they need. They wait until they are hopelessly lost ,or a simple job has become a nightmare(可怕的经历) before they seek help.

And it is also true that help is not usually too hard to get. But we have to ask for it.

Entrepreneur Brian Tracy put it will, “ Ask for what you want. Ask for help but never be afraid to ask.” Or like one man is fond of saying, “You don’t always get what you ask for, but you never get what you don’t ask for.” Do you need help? It may be easier to get than you think. Just ask for it. 57. The man on the deserted island waved his arms in order to ______. A. greet them in his own way B. show his sadness to them C. ask for help from them

D. tell them that he was happy 58. In our reality, many people don’t easily ask for help mainly because _______. A. they are unwilling to do so B. they are afraid of being refused C. they are often made fun of by others

D. they often have nightmares of seeking it

59. The author suggests in the last paragraph that ______. A. we should ask for help at any time B. we can always receive what we ask for

C. we shouldn’t hesitate(犹豫,迟疑) to ask for what we want when necessary D. it is not too hard for us to get what we don’t want 60. What is the best title for this passage? A. The benefit of seeking help B. Help is really good for you C. Important help in our life

D. Just ask for help from others
