Like a lot of people did, I didn't like Lady Mary Crawley from the beginning. I thought she was a stony conservative woman whose fiancé Patrick, Lord Grantham's brother's son, an heir to the title and Downton, died and she was reluctant to go into full mourning, because she hate black clothes, and she did not love him, indicating she had engaged with someone she didn't love but could inherit everything from her father and made her the new hostess of Downton.

But my minds were changed soon, and I got in love with her. I got to admit she looked exorable, but just outwardly. People around her always said she didn't have a heart or any feelings, compared to Lady Sybil, and she herself was always pretending she was strong. Only a few people could see her tears and panic. Mr. Carson, the butler of Downton, who looked at Lady Mary's growing up from a little girl, was very fond of her. He was one of those who knew she was not as strong as she behaved. When Mary was turned down by Matthew, she was heartbroken but she said she was well and never down for long in a trembling voice with spasmodic sobs. But Carson knew she was really hurt at the moment, hugging her and consoling her. Like what he said, Mary had spirit. She might be upset about something, but she wouldn't be always upset. No matter how painful it was and it would she always behaved erectly.

Interestingly, when I thought about Mary, sometimes I thought of Mr. Praed in Mrs. Warren's Profession. They were both between the old and the new generations. Praed was from the old generation, but he could accept new things and New Women. He thought New Women were splendid, but at the same time he had the behaving style of the old generation. Mary, like him, behaved like the old generation, choosing clothes, paying calls, working for charity and doing the season. Just like she said, ‘Women like me don't have a life’, and just because of what she said, she was different from the pure old generation. At least she was not satisfied with her current lifestyle, unlike her grandmother, who even hadn't had any idea about weekends before Matthew told her about it, for she didn't have a job and didn't need to work. I can't say she hoped to have a job, but I'm sure she thought her time-idling activities were to some extent meaningless. And when it comes to her sister Sybil's new opinion, Mary was mostly on her side, at least not against her. How she reacted to Sybil's matter showed she was neither completely old-fashioned nor totally new. She didn't support Sybil's marrying Branson and asked her not to do so when she first knew Sybil's heart, and when she got the news that Sybil had run away with Branson at night, she chased them and persuaded Sybil to go home and allow their parents time to get used to the idea rather than sneak off like a thief in the night. But what she said was Sybil didn't need their parents' permission because she was 21, and ‘Even if I think this is mad, I know it will be better to do it in broad daylight than to sneak off like a thief in the night’, suggesting she was not completely against Sybil but just not supportive, and she thought her youngest sister was old enough and had the right to make her own decision but not had to accept what their parents arranged for her.

What Mary impressed me most was her love with Matthew.

I don't when she started to fall in love with him— and even she herself had no idea, for she

said she thought she might have loved for him much longer than she knew. She hated him at first, because he was the heir to her father's title and Downton and everything, while she, as her father's first daughter, couldn't get anything without marrying Matthew just because she was a girl. And Matthew, their distant cousin, was a complete stranger to the aristocracy Crawley family in the first place. What's more, he claimed that he didn't want to marry a girl the Crawley family pushed into him, which was unfortunately heard by Mary. His impertinent words gave her a very bad first impression, but somehow, she fell in love with him, and was so crazy about him that she hoped to confess her secret of taking someone else as a lover with no thought of marriage before Matthew's proposal, at risk of her reputation as a decent and exquisite lady. Mary didn't have the chance to tell Matthew the truth because Matthew changed his idea because of Mary's hesitation during her mother's pregnancy— if the baby were a boy, Matthew wouldn't be the heir and wouldn't inherit a penny from Lord Grantham. She hesitated because she felt as if she caught him with a lie if she did not tell him her secret, but Matthew did not know about that at all. He left Downton and engaged with another girl, Lavinia, and then took her to Downton to meet the Crawleys. Mary was absolutely heartbroken, but she pretended to be fine. I know the bitter feeling of watching the loved one being with the replacement, and I don't know what would I do were I Mary, but Mary's reaction was so graceful that most people, including her mother and Matthew himself, believed Mary did not love him anymore and they were at peace now. I think Mary did this because she thought Matthew and Lavinia loved each other and they would make a good couple, although from Lavinia's perspective Matthew and Mary looked so fine, so right when they were together. Both of the women wanted Matthew to be happy, so they both tried not to be nuisances. If Lavinia had not died, I doubted Mary would make an end with Matthew and marry someone else in order not to distract him.

At last I got to say something that may sound kind of weird. The most important reason I like Mary is not aforementioned. I like her because she always pretended she didn't have a heart and tried to be strong— except the grim time that Matthew died. People always get strong when they don't have a heart, or more probably, pretend not to have a heart. Even the most cold-blooded person have a heart, but those who pretend not to have one and always struggle for what they want determinedly can usually take a successful shot. I love Mary for the aforementioned reasons, and I’ll still be crazy in love with this ravishing woman.
