Politeness Guidelines

You can apply the following (where appropriate) to most interactions with others – friends, colleagues, family, customers, everybody! Always use common sense and try to behave as appropriately as possible, taking into account any cultural differences.

1. Say hello to people – greet people appropriately, gain eye contact and smile naturally, shake hands or hug where appropriate but say hello, especially to colleagues and other people you see every day. Be approachable. Do not blank people just because you’re having a bad day.

2. Take time to make some small talk - perhaps mention the weather or ask about the other person’s family or talk about something that is in the news. Make an effort to engage in light conversation, show some interest, but don’t overdo it. Remain friendly and positive and pick up on the verbal and non-verbal signals from the other person.

3. Try to remember things about the other person and comment appropriately – use their spouse’s name, their birthday, any significant events that have occurred (or are about to occur) in their life. Always be mindful of others’ problems and difficult life events.

4. Always use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Make sure you thank people for their input or contribution and always include ‘please’ when asking for something. If somebody offers you something use 'Yes please' or 'No thank you'.

5. Praise and/or congratulate others on their achievements. Praise needs to be seen as genuine – this can be difficult if you feel jealous or angry.

6. At work be polite and helpful to your subordinates as well as your bosses. Respect and acknowledge the positions, roles and duties of others.

7. Use appropriate language – be respectful of gender, race, religion, political viewpoints and other potentially controversial or difficult subjects. Do not make derogatory or potentially inflammatory comments.

8. Learn to listen attentively - pay attention to others while they speak – do not get distracted mid-conversation and do not interrupt.

9. Respect other people's time. Try to be precise and to-the-point in explanations without appearing to be rushed.

10. Be assertive when necessary but respect the right of others to be assertive too.

11. Avoid gossip. Try to have positive things to say about other people.

12. Apologise for your mistakes. If you say or do something that may be considered rude or embarrassing then apologise, but don’t overdo your apologies.

13. Avoid jargon and vocabulary that may be difficult for others to understand – explain complex ideas or instructions carefully. Do not appear arrogant.

14. Respect, and be prepared to listen to, the ideas and opinions of others.Dress appropriately for the situation. Avoid wearing revealing clothing in public and avoid staring at others who are wearing revealing clothing. Avoid being dressed too casually for the situation.

15. Use humour carefully. Aim not to cause any offence and know the boundaries of appropriate language for different situations.

16. Practise good personal hygiene. Wash and brush your teeth regularly, change your clothes and use deodorant. Avoid strong perfumes, after-shaves or colognes.

17. Be punctual. If you have arranged to meet somebody at a certain time make sure you are on time, or even a few minutes early. If you are going to be late let the other person/people know as far in advance as you can. Do not rely on feeble or exaggerated excuses to explain lateness. Respect other people’s time and don’t waste it.

18. Always practise good table manners. When eating around others avoid foods with strong odours, do not talk with your mouth full or chew with your mouth open, and eat quietly.

19. Do not pick your nose or ears, chew on your fingers or bite your fingernails in public. Also avoid playing excessively with your hair.

Good manners cost nothing but can make a big difference to how other people feel about you, or the organisation you are representing. When you’re polite and show good manners others are more likely to be polite and courteous in return.

Everyone is busing pursuing his or her own success, trying to do more in the limited time and space, therefore, some people hold the view that since the world get more busy and crowed today, we shouldn’t expect people be polite to others. Seriously, I can’t agree with this assert for several reasons below.

Admittedly, there are some people be impolite to others, since they get much pressure from the society, which they can’t afford. This kind of people may have a sensitive nerve, caring so much about the outside environment and not strong enough to face the difficulties. We meet people like this everyday, who are tied about his job and gets angry with his family, or who gets a bad temper then catches fire with the people around them. We must to say that sating in a busy and crowed world, it may sometimes make unpiloted to others.

However, most of the people could control themselves, which let them be polite to others even in the busy and crowed conditions. They know how to adjust their temper, they could understand other people’s feeling, therefore, it’s not hard to be polite and keep harmonious. For instance, I catch the morning bus to the company everyday, and during the morning period the bus is really crowed, everyone is in a hurry, but everyone is polite and cares about others. We stand in a line to wait the bus, when it comes no one will push others, if there is old man or children gets on the bus, people who are sitting will let them to sit down in order to keep their safety.

What’s more, be polite can give us good temper as well. No one could still be happy after a big fight with others, therefore, why don’t we keep polite and have a smile on our face? We can not only be happy yourself, but also transmit the health energy to others.

In the nutshell, I should reinforce my perspective that I don’t agree with the opinion that since the world get more busy and crowed today, we shouldn’t expect people be polite to others.

1.Definition

Politeness is a manner that shows your respect for people and your friendliness. It can not only shows your qualities but also stimulate the communication between each other. It is widely used in our daily life.

2. Different cases to be polite (Example) 2.1. The mood system

The mood system in English is very important grammatic- cal category. By mood, we mean a kind of attitude or judgement That the speaker communicate towards what happens. Gramma- tically, we can employ some forms of the verb to indicate the various attitudes.

(1) Don’t smoke here.

(2) I would rather you didn’t smoke here.

If we take a closer look at the examples above. It is no difficult to find that there is something different between them. Sentence(1) is an imperative mood sentence. It shows a kind of psychological remoteness from the listener. In sentence(2), we use “would rather” to talk to the listener. It seems to be more polite and closer.

2.2 The modality system

Modality is another important grammatical concept. Technically speaking, it is a means for the speaker to convey his/her attitude or judgement about things.

(5) Would you close the door for me?

While the three sentences share the same basic meaning. We can detect a gradual increase of politeness from (3) to

(5).Sentence(3), the least polite of the three, is imperative and it ususally functions as an order. By contrast, in sentence(5), the modal verb “would” is used to show indiretness as well as a strong tentativeness in voicing the request. In sentence(5), to put in another way, is left with the freedom to choose whether to do as required or not. (5) is more polite.

2.3 Interrogative sentence

Interrogative sentence can also indicate the politeness.

(6) We shall start now.

(7) Shall we start now?

Comparing sentence(6) and sentence(7),we can easily find that the sentence(6) is an indicate sentence, it may be said by a

teacher, but it sounds like an order. In sentence (7), it is an advise. Also, it shows that the teacher is respect for her/his students. The students may have a preference for the teacher who speak the latter sentence.

2.4. Passive sentence

Passive sentence can indicate the politeness to people. It is widely used in work place or in public.

(8) I want to become an employee of your company.

(9) I want to be employed by your company.

The sentence(8) tend to express your own willing. Sentence(9) stresses the company. When we have an interview, it’s better to use the second sentence because it shows your politeness to the company. You are more likely to be employed.
