Special Training Camp:We Change, We Surmount

5 Youth

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, selfdistrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. 篇三:我的英语作文--Advice to Youth

我的英语作文--Advice to Youth

Being told I would be expected to talk here, I inquired what sort of talk I ought to make. They said it should be something suitable to youth-something didactic, instructive, or something in the nature of good advice. Very well. I have a few things in my mind which I have often longed to say for the instruction of the young; for it is in one's tender early years that such things will best take root and be most enduring and most valuable. Then, I will say to you my young friends -- and I say it beseechingly, urging --

Always obey your parents, when they are present. This is the best policy in the long run, because if you don't, they will make you. Most parents think they know better than you do, and you can generally make more by humoring that superstition2 than you can by acting3 on your own better judgment4.

Be respectful to your superiors, if you have any, also to strangers, and sometimes to others. If a person offends you and you are in doubt as to whether it was intentional5 or not, do not resort to extreme measures; simply watch your chance and hit him with a brick. That will be sufficient. If you shall find that he had not intended any offense, come out frankly and confess yourself in the wrong when you struck him; acknowledge it like a man and say you didn't mean to. Yes, always avoid violence; in this age of charity and kindliness8, the time has gone by for such things.

Leave dynamite9 to the low and unrefined.

Go to bed early, get up early- this is wise. Some authorities say get up with the sun; some say get up with one thing, others with another. But a lark10 is really the best thing to get up with. It gives you a splendid reputation with everybody to know that you get up with the lark; and if you get the right kind of lark, and work at him right, you can easily train him to get up at half past nine, every time -- it's no trick at all.

Youth

People always have a preference for youth. According to our experience, youth is a symbol of vigor, confidence and beauty. For most people, youth also fills them with longing and eagerness of discovery. Indeed, we can say that youth is the golden period in human’s life.

It is obvious that youth is also emphasised a lot in our culture since the ancient times. We Chinese people believe that heroes are cultivated from childhood, which indicates that youth is the key period in which people enable to do something great what the old cannot manage to do any more. I consider that what Ba Jin once said, “We should remember that youth is something wonderful and is the source of courage as for me.” is also surely believed by most Chinese people. For people might lose all the essence like courage, we think youth valuable and we emphasis on youth all the time in our culture.

In the popular American movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the host Benjamin Button, who was born as an old man and died as a baby, grew younger and younger as time passes by. It can never happen in the human’s world, but the fantastic plot reveals people’s longing for renewing youth. For youth is so favored by people all round the world, nowadays some old people try to look not as old as they really are. In making use of this wonderful wish, advertisements and commercials urge people a lot to use various kinds of hair coloring, cream rinses and cleansing milk and even by performing cosmetic surgeries to eliminate their grey hair and wrinkles through all sorts of media in daily life. We cannot deny that although all these cosmetics are not cheap, they do fit senior customers’ appetite of wishing to look younger as possible.

But why most of the senior adults feel flattered to be told they look much younger than they really are? Is knowing the charm, courage, and ability to do things well still remain on them from others a splendid feeling of acceptance? In the fact, I believe that being identified as young is just like a confirmation of still being useful for others. Youth is the most valuable but also vanishes quite easily. As soon as someone doesn’t have youth any more, he/she must realize the significance of youth but is not ready to accept the crucial fact mentally, for which they are likely to pretend as if they are still in youth and manage to do things whatever young people can. As for me, it seems also very reasonable and understandable that maybe they took youth for granted before, and now they regret a little and become eager to catch the tail of youth and to feel the last sense of being young. This common phenomenon cannot be not thought as shameful or wrong for everyone wishes to look pretty and young from the bottom of heart. But from this we young people should learn to truly appreciate youth which we still have now.

A famous motto goes like this, “Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind; it is not rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions: it is the freshness; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.” which means besides of shown on the outside appearance, youth also means a lot in a deeper sense psychologically. When we refer to youth,

it should not be only considered as young appearance or a period of life but a state of mind and a sort of freshness emotion and mentality. From a scientific point of view, the cause of turning from young to old is the metabolism which is a common natural phenomenon itself which cannot be stopped or slowed down, but people can keep the young state of mind all along as they wish. Whether at the age of 60 or 16, people can maintain the unfailing childlike curiosity of what’s next and the joy of living, and there can be always a wireless station for sending and receiving messages of beauty, hope, cheer and courage. Years can wrinkle the skin apparently, but it is people themselves who give up enthusiasm and wrinkles their soul. In this way, we can see that nobody really grows old merely by a number of years but by deserting our ideals.

In Nathaniel Hawthone’s Dr. Heidegger's Experiment, the three old men and the old widow shouted to the doctor, “Give us more of this wondrous water!” “We are younger-but we are still too old! Quick give us more!” But what a sad fact is: they cannot digest more youth, because they have given up themselves and don’t think their mood and mentality could become youthful but “still too old”, for worry, fear, self-distrust1 bows the heart and turns the spirit to old indeed. Instead of turning to all those cosmetics and even Fountain of Youth for help, with the will, the imagination and the passion of the emotions, every human being could recover his/her youthful vigor. And only in this way youth can be really immortal.
