Anne's Diary
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2007年09月05日 03:32 Shenzhen Daily
Anne Frank's (1929-1945) world famous diary records two years of her life from 1942 to 1944, when her family were hiding in Amsterdam from German Nazis. The diary begins just before the family retreated into their "secret annexe." Anne Frank recorded mostly her hopes, frustrations (困惑), clashes with her parents, and observation of her companions. Its first version, which appeared in 1947, was edited by Anne's father, who removed certain family references and some of her highly intimate confessions (告白).
The diary has been translated into some 60 languages since its publication. First translation into English was made in 1952 and published under the title The Diary of a Young Girl. It was adapted into a motion picture in 1959, directed by George Stevens. Also Anne Frank Huis - the hiding-place - was opened in Amsterdam on the Prinsengracht 263. The house was given by its owner to the Anne Frank foundation.
About Anne
Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany. The Frank's family business included banking, management of the springs at Bad Soden and the manufacture of cough drops (咳嗽糖浆). Anne's mother was the daughter of a manufacturer. She had married Otto Frank in 1925. After the Nazis won in national elections in 1932, Adolf Hitler was appointed next year chancellor of Germany. Otto Frank had earlier toyed with the idea of emigrating, and in 1933 the family fled from Frankfurt to the Netherlands, where Otto Frank continued his career as a businessman. In 1938 Anne Frank's two uncles escaped to the United States. After the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, anti-Jewish decrees followed in rapid succession. Anne's sister received a notice to report to the Nazis. The family went hiding with four other friends in a sealed-off office flat in Amsterdam.
In 1944 Gestapo was informed of the flat - from 10,000 Jews, who went into hiding, some 5,000 were betrayed. The Franks were arrested in the 1960s and transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where Anne's mother died. Anne and her sister were transferred from the Dutch concentration camp, Westerbork, to Bergen-Belsen where they both died of typhus (伤寒).
The Diary
Anne Frank received a diary in 1942 for her 13th birthday, and wrote in an early entry: "I hope that you will be a great support and comfort to me." When she started the diary, she was still attending the Jewish secondary school. On her birthday, June 14, she opens presents: "The first to
greet me was you, possibly the nicest of all." After moving in the hiding place in a warehouse, Frank depictes the nightmare reality of eight persons crowded into tiny living quarters, in fear of being discovered, but also her dreams, hopes and feelings of a young girl on the verge of womanhood. The poignancy of the diary is increased by her use of epistolary (书信体) form. The letters are addressed, in the absence of her friends, to the imaginary "Kitty."
Frank started to write at school, and planned to become a writer. When she heard from radio broadcast from London about the importance of war diaries and letters, and possible publication, she changed the style of her diaries. On May 20, 1944 she decided to rewrite her earlier texts, and in two and half months she produced 324 handwritten pages.
The family was betrayed before Frank finished her work. The final entry is Aug. 1, 1944. On Aug. 4 they were arrested.
The authenticity of the diary was examined in the 1980s, when neo-Nazis claimed that it was forged. All the versions of Anne Frank's texts were published in 1986. However, Otto Frank had put aside before the publication five diary pages, giving them later to his close friend, Cor Suijk. In these pages Ane Frank depicted her parents' marriage, defended her mother, and hoped that nobody would see her writings. In 1995 selections of diary suppressed by Otto Frank were made public.
Excerpts from "The Diary of a Young Girl"
"I haven't written for a few days, because I wanted first of all to think about my diary. It's an odd idea for someone like me to keep a diary; not only because I have never done so before, but because it seems to me that neither I - nor for that matter anyone else - will be interested in the unbosomings (吐露心事) of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl. Still, what does that matter? I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart."
"I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are still truly good at heart..."
"Whoever is happy will make others happy too. He who has courage and faith will never perish in misery!"

“I knew that Anna wrote a diary. She spoke about the diary. She left her diary with me at night in a briefcase next to my bed. I had promised her never to look in; I never did. When I returned, and after I heard the news my children would not come back, Meed gave me the diary which has been saved by I should say a miracle. It took me a very long time to read it, and I must say I was very much surprised. About deep thoughts Anna had; her seriousness, especially her self-criticism. It was quite a different Anna I had known as my daughter. She never really showed this kind of inner feeling. She talked about many things, we criticized many things, but what really was her feeling were I only could see from the diary. And my conclusion is, as I had been in very, very good terms with Anna, that most parents don't know really their children. So I know, too, that reading the diary parents and teachers will learn a lot. To build up a future, you have to know the past. You see, I am pretty old now, but I am not a bitter man. Young people write to me, asking questions. Many are wiring a diary themselves; calling their diary Anna's diary. They write to Anna as Anna wrote to Kitty. And so, especially in the time of adolescence, they get a lot of confidence and hope for their lives in reading about Anna and her experiences.”

Mr. Frank: Anne’s father who once owned a business in Germany

Anne’s Story
Anne Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. At that time the Jewish community formed an important part of the city’s economic and cultural success. Her father, Otto Frank, was a respected businessman whose family had lived in the city for many generations. They lived in a comfortable five-room flat and Anne was raised with love and great care. In the spring of 1934, a year after Hitler and the Nazi Party (纳粹党) rose to power, the family moved to Holland whose people welcomed them.
The Nazi Party ruled Germany from 1933 to 1945. One of the key policies was to kill all the Jews in Europe. When Jews were found, they were sent to concentration camps(集中营) farther east to be killed, mostly in Poland. Families were separated and transported in trains. For many days, they went without food, water, sanitation or fresh air. To avoid this terrible fate, some Jewish families went into hiding, often with the help of non-Jewish friends. After the German invasion of 1940, Anne was forced to leave her school, as were all known Jews. At first, the Gestapo(盖世太保) sent thousands of Dutch people who opposed the Nazis to slave labor camps in Germany. Then in February 1941 the Gestapo began to arrest Jews. It was in July 1942 that Otto Frank made plans to hide his family. Many older houses in Amsterdam have more than one floor. The topmost floor is called the “attic” and is usually a place to store seldom-used things.
The Frank and other family, the Van Daans, hid there for just over two years before they were discovered. It was very crowded there. Only three young people were there: Margot, Peter and, of course, Anne. Her diary shows that Anne felt she was the naughty one of the group since she was always being scolded. She felt she could not confide in Margot because her sister was always good. Andshe felt she could not confide in Peter because he was a boy. So she made a friend of her diary. Later, however, she did become closer to Peter and they took a liking to one another. Anne talks about her growing friendship in her diary.
The building in Amsterdam where Anne Frank’s family hid was not a set of apartment but a small business office with storage rooms. Therefore, people were not expected to come and go from it except during regular business hours. This made it all the more difficult for the Franks to receive visitors. During the day the lower floors continued to serve as a place of business. After working hours, the Frank family’s Dutch friends brought them food, clothing, news from the outside world, and comfort. Sadly, a Dutch employee in the office told the Gestapo of their hiding place. So they were arrested. They were in one of the last groups of Jews to be taken to the camps. Anne’s mother got very ill at Auschwitz in Poland and stayed behind when Anne, her sister, and Mrs. Van Daan were moved to Belsen, a smaller camp in Germany. Peter, who in better health than the others, was forced into a long march from the camp where he disappeared. When Margot died in March, 1945, Anne probably lost her desire to live. She died just before her 16th birthday and less than a month before the surviving Jews were freed by American, British, Canadian and Russian soldiers. The primary school she attend in Amsterdam is now named after her. Every year she is remembered in a travelling exhibition that explains her life and her experience.

A diary of Anna
Saturday, 15 July, 1944
“For in its innermost depths, childhood is lonelier than old age.”I read this saying in some book and I’ve always remembered it, and found it to be true. It is true then that grownups have a more difficult time here than we do? No. I know it isn’t. Older people have formed their opinions about everything, and don’t waver before they act. It’s twice as hard for us young ones to hold our ground, and maintain our opinions…
Anyone who claims that the older ones have a more difficult time here certainly doesn’t realize to what extent our problems weight down on us, problems for which we are probably too young, but which are continuous, until, after a long time, we think we’ve found a solution, but the solution doesn’t seem fit with the facts. That’s the difficulty: ideals, dreams, and cherished hopes rise with us, only to meet the terrible truth and be destroyed.
It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my ideals, because they seem so unrealistic and impossible to carry on. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart…

Anne lived in Amsterdam in the Netherlands during World War Ⅱ .Her family wad Jewish so they had to hide or they would be caught by German Nazis. They hid away for twenty-five months before they were discovered. During that time the only true friends was her diary. She said, “I don’t want to set down a series of facts as most people do. But I want this diary itself to be my best friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty. Now read how she felt after being in the hiding place since July 1942.
Thursday 15th June 1944
Dear Kitty,
I wonder if it’s because I haven’t been able to be outdoors for so long that I’ve grown so crazy about everything to do with nature. I can well remember that there was a time when a deep blue sky, the songs of the bird, moonlight and flower could never have kept me spellbound. That’s changed since I came here.
…for example, one evening when it was so warm, I stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by myself. But as the moon gave far too much light, I didn’t dare open the window. Another time five month ago, I happened to be upstairs when at dusk when the window was open. I didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. The dark, rainy evening, the wind, the thundering clouds held me entirely in their power; it was the first time in a year and a half that I‘d seen the night face to face….
…Sadly…I am only able to look at nature through dirty curtain before very dusty window. It’s no pleasure looking at nature through these any longer, because nature is one thing really must be experienced.
Yours,
Anne
