1. Fossil energy and nuclear energy are considered nonrenewable energy types. Nonrenewable

energy is obtained from sources at a rate that exceeds the rate at which the sources are replenished. For example, if the biogenic origin of fossil fuels is correct, we could consider fossil fuels renewable over a period of millions of years, but the existing store of fossil fuels is being

consumed over a period of centuries. Because we are consuming fossil fuels at a rate that exceeds the rate of replenishment, we consider fossil fuels nonrenewable. Similar comments apply to nuclear fuels such as uranium, as we observe in later chapters. Solar energy is considered a

renewable energy for the following reasons. Renewable energy is energy obtained from sources at a rate that is less than or equal to the rate at which the source is replenished. In the case of solar energy, we can use only the amount of energy provided by the sun. Because the remaining lifetime of the sun is measured in millions of years, many people consider solar energy an inexhaustible supply of energy. In fact, solar energy from the sun is finite, but should be available for use by many generations of people. Solar energy is therefore considered renewable. Energy sources that are associated with solar energy, such as wind and biomass, are also considered renewable. Solar radiation may be converted to other forms of energy by several conversion processes. Thermal conversion relies on the absorption of solar energy to heat a cool surface. Biological conversion of solar energy relies on photosynthesis. Photovoltaic conversion generates electrical power by the generation of an electrical current as a result of a quantum mechanical process. Wind power and ocean energy conversion rely on atmospheric pressure gradients and oceanic temperature

gradients to generate electrical power. In this chapter we focus on thermal conversion.We first discuss the source of available solar energy, and then consider solar energy technology in two of its three forms: passive solar, and active solar. The third form of solar energy, solar electric, is discussed in the next chapter. We end this chapter with a discussion of solar power plants.

2. There are many new energies for human beings nowadays. Such as nuclear energy, solar energy, wind power, ocean energy, etc. New forms of energy can greatly save traditional energies thus prevent our natural resources from being explored further. Solar energy, for example, is environment-friendly and has high efficiency. This feature is many traditional energies that unable to compare with. Moreover, new energies can be recycled for second uses, which is much better than traditional ones. Wind power is especially great because it could never be used up. So, we should take great advantage of new energies for our future development.

It has been known for some time now that a move towards sources of energy which are not carbon-based is urgently required to stop the effects of global warming. In my view, there are too few governments who seem to be promoting the use of other types of energy such as wind, wave, solar and nuclear sources of energy.

3. Governments at present are too reliant on coil, oil and gas. Although some governments are doing research into the use of alternative energy sources, many are not. Energy from the wind, the sea and the sun does not pollute the environment and is an everlasting source of power. Nuclear power is clean, and although it is not totally unproblematic, it would provide a large amount of energy and dramatically improve the environment. Countries such as France have made good use of nuclear power.

My feeling is that more use could be made of wind power. In some countries, there has been a reluctance to use wind turbines, even in areas which are not densely populated, as some people believe they are eyesores. Personally, I believe they are not only useful, but beautiful as well. Governments should spend more time and effort promoting the benefits of this source of energy and trying to make the public understand the reason for change.

In conclusion, I believe that, if governments forced everyone to have a wind turbine and solar panels on the building they live in, made more use of wave power and built more nuclear power stations, then they would manage to avert the dangers that are seriously threatening the Earth.

Outlook for China’s Wind Power Development: Wind power will continue its rapid development in the coming decades, due to China’s commitment to energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emission reduction.

Chinese government promised to devote major resources to developing renewable and nuclear energy to ensure that by 2020, consumption of non–fossil fuel power will account for 15% of the country’s total primary energy consumption and the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP will be reduced by 40–45% as compared with the emission level of 2005.

Preliminary analysis indicates that the contribution rate of wind power to the 15% goal is about 10%, which means wind power capacity must reach at least 150 GW by 2020.

This in turn means that in the years 2010–2020, the growth rate of wind power installed capacity will be kept at least at 14%, or 12 GW of annually added capacity. According to China’s 12th five-year plan, the generation of non–fossil fuel power will account for 11.4% of the country’s total primary energy consumption by 2015, instead of 8.2% as in 2005.

By 2015, there will be about 100 GW of wind power, which could displace the equivalent of 430 million tons of coal and reduce CO2 emissions by 1.2 billion tons annually, contributing 5% to achieving the emission reduction goal.

We believe that the experience and success of China in large-scale wind power development will be a valuable contribution to the development of global wind power utilization.

Wind and the environment

Wind energy is an economical power resource in many areas of the country. Wind is a clean fuel; wind farms produce no air or water pollution because no fuel is burned. The most serious environmental drawbacks to wind machines may be their negative effect on wild bird populations and the visual impact on the landscape.
