题目:Many parents these days work in other countries, taking their families with them. Do you think the advantages of the development outweigh its disadvantages?

ESSAY:

Nowadays, an increasing number of people are concerned with the phenomenon that more and more parents go to overseas for working with their family. Some people hold the opinion that parents working abroad, in particular, is not good for their family even their children. Some others, in the other hand, advocate that parents taking their families is necessary when they work in other countries. However, as for me, a better way to accompany their families is to go abroad together.

Some people believe that parents should not go abroad for working, taking their family with them. In the first place, leaving their own country, they may face some situation what is too strange to understand when they reach other countries for the first time. In the second place, the competition in foreign company is cruel; they have to spend more time on working, so that they can not take care of their family as in their own country.

However, further analysis would make it clear that increasing number of income will be earned for improvement their life. In the first place, more money means that they can provide better educational resource for their children. Not only they will learn rich culture of other country, but also they experience the local customs and practices. For example, American born Chinese, in particular, they live in a traditional Chinese family but they study in the American high school or college. So, they got some advantages of those two entirely different culture.

In summary, I think that it is a good idea to work in other countries wit their family. Many parents these days work in other countries, taking their families with them. Do you think the advantages of the development outweigh its disadvantages?

In the contemporary world, the pace of globalization is advancing at a meteoric speed. Accordingly, some people propose that a lingua franca should be contrived for individuals all over the world to conduct international communication; however, people hold divergent views when it comes to this issue. Personally, I tend to believe that it is meaningless to simply compar

e the merits and drawbacks of inventing a universal language as both sides are not ignorable.

Compelling arguments can be made that different languages, undoubtedly, cause obstacles and misunderstandings in conversation, restricting the native to communicate with foreigners. In contrast, a universal language may not only bring about convenience for individuals in their daily life, learning and working, but promote joint development the world over, smooth the talk between nations and drive societal advance as well. For example, college students are expected to no longer rely on mechanical translation software when downloading foreign essays and material and companies can economize their costs and budget because it is unnecessary for them to hire simultaneous interpreters. Meanwhile, foreign countries are accessible to travelers due to the fact that individuals no longer fret about cultural shock and linguistic obstacles. Consequently, contriving a fresh language is sure to produce profits for both the public and countries from all over the world.

However, admittedly, notwithstanding the reality that a lingua franca has a variety of advantages, we should still be consciously aware of its downsides. For one thing, on the basis of recent research and statistics, the vernacular and lesser-known languages are disappearing at a staggering rate. And it seems that under the huge impact of dominant languages, like the proliferation of English, the extinction of lesser-known languages are just around the corner. For the other thing, some experts and scholars are anxious about the phenomenon that cultural assimilation may give rise to global uniformity, rendering life become dull and monotonous. Traditions, rites, rituals, mores and the language of a culture are all unifying forces of a nation and the decline of them erodes the national identity and national pride of a country.

Overall, based on what has been discussed above, I feel whether to contrive a new language is a sophisticated issue which we are well-advised to take varying aspects into account before we make the final decision.

J9T2 TASK1

The bar chat gives the information about the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in United kingdom ,divided into three different call types, during the period from 1995 to 2002.

According to the bar chart, the minutes which used on fixed line local call type saw an upward trend gradually from 1995 to 1999 .In 1995 it coasted 72billon minutes on local-fixed line and it peaked at 90 billion minutes until 1999 .However ,in the rest 3 years , the figure experienced a downward trend , with 85 billion minutes in 2000, 79 billion minutes in 2001 and 72 billion minutes in 2002 . It is interesting that the figure in 2002 has fallen back to 72, which was as high as the figure in 1995.

As the other call types are concered , over the 8 years between 1995 and 2002 , the figure of national and international-fixed line and mobiles-all calls increased

respectively. We can see that in 1995, the figure of national and international-fixed was only 38, with the slight increase , in 2002 ,it reached its peak at 61 billion

minutes .As for the figure of mobiles , it saw an significant upward on the bar chart , with the figure only 4 in 1995 ,while it peaked at 46 in 2002.

To sum up , from the bar chart ,we can find that during the period from 1995 to 2002 , the total number of minutes of telephone calls in the United Kingdom saw different trend by three different categories differently.

TASK2:

Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity ,improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children).

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In recent years , some high schools order their students must participate in the unpaid community service as attending a compulsory course which would be scored by their teachers . I disagree this totally , although some people belive that unpaid community service should be a required part of high school programmes.

Admittedly , participation in some unpaid community services such as working for a charty , improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children can bring some benefits to high school teenagers. It can forster students to become a kind person with sympathe mind , can help them to understand how to communicate with different people , can make them be exposed to other people’s harshtime by

witnessting the disabled children , poor person as well as many other disadvantaged groups .Besides , attending some unpaid community services can improve students practical skills as well as job skills.

Nevertheless , taking part in unpaid community services does not need become a

compulsory part of high school programmes .Undoubtedly, it is a excellent thing to do

unpaid community service , while if students were obligated to do this , with the reluctant emotion to do this , the effect would be discounted .Specifically , some

students have too much workload on study to accomplish, it is difficult to ask them to throw away their major task ,then turn to help others with a happy mood . In

addition ,some teenagers are in some disadvantaged circumstance such as disabled or poor as well. How can we ask them to help others and who can secure them ?

From my perspective , it does not make any sense to put unpaid community service as a compulsory course.

The four pie charts compare the information about units of electricity production by fuel source in Australia and France in 1980 and 2000.

Australia ,we can see over 20 year period between 1980 and 2000, the total production increased by 70 units. The units of electricity by coal increased

In contrast, the usage of natural gas and hydro power decreased by 23 units and 3 units respectively. As for the coal, it remained stable at 25 units.

Task2: Some people think that universities should provide graduates with knowledge and skills needed in the workplace .Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake , regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What , in your opinion ,should be the main function of a university?

Nowadays, it is not uncommon that many people dropout from universities or even go to career path after high school graduation. They think the university only can bring the theoretical knowledge to them, while that can’t help their employment prospects. From my perspective, the university should still mainly give access to knowledge for its own sake ,regardless of whether the course is useful to an employment.

In other words, I think the main function of a university should be enable students to acquire theoretical knowledge rather than the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace, because the adequate theoretical knowledge can lay foundation for practical knowledge, can open the door for better career prospects. In people’s job lives, the certification of their profession, the acknowledge of their degree, the high scores of their subjects and even the high speaking by students’ faculties are all contribute to their career path, whereas these factors all can be acquired by the theoretical knowledge’s study.

Furthermore, with the main function of a university to give access to theoretical knowledge ,the university should also provide some opportunities for students to training their job skills and acquire some practical knowledge of employment. The universities can offer some courses for students learning practical knowledge, the faculties of universities can recommend students to do some part-time job when their study schedule are not over-whelmed.

To sum up ,my point of view is that the main function of a university is to open a door for students to acquire theoretical knowledge so as to lay a solid foundation for their career prospects.

Two kinds of people who choose to live alone on purpose

Listing:

The first group: artists seeking inspiration

example: story of a writer

The second group: people being disappointed with life

example: story of a woman

Thoughts on Living Alone

Everyone hopes to live a way of life decided by himself. And in the modern society, it’s easy to find that there are two kinds of people who choose to live alone on purpose.

The first group is artists who would like to seek inspiration for their works. To take the story of Tao Yuanming as an example, he looked forward to living alone so that nobody else could interfere with his creativity and he could experience anything in the nature with the whole body and soul. He thought being alone might be a key to his success.

The other group is people being disappointed with life. To cite the story of a woman as an example in support of this purpose, she was hurt by her former lover, and cheated seriously by someone in her community. Being hopeless about the society, she was gratified to learn that living alone could calm herself down and provide her with a comfortable place for her heart.

Thus, all the people have rights to choose their own way of life which does no harm to others. The only thing we can conduct is to understand and respect their choice.

Can money buy happiness? Different people have different opinions. It is true that with enough money one can buy all the things one wants, and live a life of comfort and security. However, it is equally true that lack of money causes great distress. It is a common view that "money is the root of all evil." The pursuit of money drives many people to cheat and steal. In some places there is nothing that cannot be bought with money, resulting in corrupt societies where everybody is miserable. Money does not necessarily mean happiness. It all depends on how it is used. If we make honest and sensible use of money, it can be a stepping-stone to happiness. Although money cannot buy happiness, it can make happiness possible if it is employed sensibly.
