This cartoon is silly, and yet compelling: a large customer holds a hopelessly small piece of cloth as the tailor carefully measures. Such an image suggests that one needs to consider practical reality in the pursuance of goals. Merely acting on one's desires,

The fact that currently there are more graduates than jobs reminds us of the importance of rational thinking. Every year approximately 3 million students graduate from

universities and begin looking for work. Many of them fail to find suitable employment because there are simply not enough opportunities to accommodate such great numbers of

graduates. In addition, however, one might also cite flawed individual assessment as a

In order to create a realistic target for one's future, one must make rational decisions and prepare accordingly. A student who aims to be a surgeon, for example, must take care to acquire opportunities to do clinical practice and gain sufficient knowledge. In other words, customers would do well to take accurate measurements before purchasing their fabric.

A small piece of cloth cannot adequately clothe a large person.

In the cartoon we can see a large person being measured by a tailor to get suitable clothes made. Anything to be done must be measured in advance so that we are able to find

a proper way to do it. If the tailor does not take measurements of the man, then he would

This same principle applies to solving any other problem. Firstly, when we want to know the reality of something, we must describe it like it is, getting rid of our prejudices and exaggerations, so that we can have an unbiased view. Secondly, the object should be analyzed in a concrete way so that we can grasp the reasons and rules of it. Thirdly, we must adapt our approach to solving a problem, for each situation is different from the

others.

The cartoon implies different meanings to different people. A teacher should adopt different teaching methods according to the students in the class; a doctor should prescribe different treatments according to the patient's symptoms; a farmer should seed different plants according to the various conditions of the earth. From a philosophical point of view, dissimilar problems should be approached differently. Good results come from attentive analysis of a problem.

Most people are familiar with the proverb: Rome was not built in a day. An object as grand as a pyramid is likewise not so quickly or easily constructed. Just as the greatness of the city of Rome is due to the combination of its smaller parts, a pyramid is only as strong as the stones it is comprised of. The image of a pyramid reminds us that great

success

History proves that many famous artists and scientists are only successful because of their continued efforts, even after numerous failures. One might recall Leonardo DaVinci's

drawing of an egg, Wang Xi Zhi practicing handwriting, or Thomas Edison inventing the light bulb, for example. The fable that tells us that even water can eventually pierce through stone also points to the importance of patience and diligence. We should take such stories and histories into account and remember the importance of fundamentals; remember that one can build a pyramid only if one is willing to work with small stones. People would be wise to abandon rash inclinations and instead try in earnest. Perseverance is sure to leadto success.

We can see in the picture, a great Egyptian Pyramid towering magnificently into the sky. At first sight visitors may be overwhelmed by the pyramid and cannot help but marvel at the huge stones in front of them — the embodiment of patience and endurance of an Ancient Egyptian Civilization. During this extended period of building, one can only imagine the amount of patience and endurance that was required by the people before any of this

greatness

The stones of the pyramid remind us of a famous saying: “Rome was not built in a day,” that is, great things are never done without much time and labor.

As human beings, we are eager to win merits for ourselves. It is, however, onlypatience as well as endurance that can help us to succeed in performing great deeds. In the case of Si Maqian, without those brilliant qualities mentioned above, he could never attain such great achievements. Difficulties are unavoidable, unless we do not engage in anything at all. In the end, it is patience and e

Some people would give up halfway in the face of what seems to be insurmountable. Men accomplish everything until we get the final result. The reason is very simple: if one attempts to climb a mountain, however high he reaches, he has failed if he does not reach the top.

参考词汇:bare (光秃的),destroy(毁坏)

Once there was a village at the foot of the hill. There were many green trees on the hill. The villagers were very poor. One day, a villager had an idea. He cut the tall trees on the hill and sold them. With the money he had built a new house. He seemed to have become rich. So many other villagers followed him and began to cut down more trees. Some time later, no trees were left and the hill was bare.

Unluckily the village became very hot in summer and there were heavy storms and

floods. Many of the fields and even the houses were destroyed. The villagers became poor again and even poorer.

27.Directions:

A. Study the following set of pictures carefully and write an essay in no less than 120 words.

B. Your essay must be written clearly on the ANSWER SHEET Ⅱ.

C. Your essay should cover all the information provided and meet the requirements below:

1. Interpret the following pictures.

2. Predict the tendency of tobacco consumption and give your reasons.

As is shown in the first picture, the total production of tobacco in the world dropped from 14.364billion lbs. in 1994 to 14.2billion lbs. in 1995. According to the figures given in picture two, cigarette smokers account for 20percent of the total population in the world, reaching 1.1 billion persons. From the third and the fourth pictures we can see that smoking causes a lot of losses. First, it is a tremendous waste of money. The total amount of money spent on cigarette smoking amounts to $200 billion every year. Second, about 3 million people on the globe die of smoking every year.

As far as the tendency of tobacco consumption is concerned, I think in some developed countries the

consumption will more or less stabilize. In many developing nations, however, the number of cigarette smokers will be on the rise.

There are two good reasons for what I’ve mentioned above. On the one hand, a growing number of people in developed countries realize that smoking pollutes the air, that it does a lot of harm to one’s health, and that it may be responsible for lung cancer and many other disease. One the other hand, cigarette smoking, unfortunately, is seen as a sign of economic growth in many developing countries. It is clear that the future tobacco consumption will vary from country to country.

28.Directions:

A. Study the following cartoon carefully and write an essay in no less than 150 words.

B. Your essay must be written clearly on the ANSWER SHEET Ⅱ.

C. Your essay should meet the requirements below:

1. Write out the message conveyed by the cartoon.

2. Give your comments.

According to the cartoon, various kinds of promises are often seen not only in advertisements, but also in department stores and even in public services. It is certain that promises are a good thing. But, as is shown in the picture, some of them are found to be false and deceptive. The reason for it is that what many advertisements undertake to fulfill, in fact, amounts to nothing else except what they are duty—bound to do.

As far as I am concerned, all promises in ads should be honest, without any sophistry. But now many of them turn out to be false. They attempt to induce consumers to purchase their goods and services. It is clear that there are shop owners and company managers who, making use of promises, stop at nothing to set traps for consumers to fall into. The promises given by them are shown to be the obligations they ought to fulfill. That is to say, they don’t provide consumers with any extra services which would help consumers to relieve their possible problems after they buy the goods. As is known to all, the consumer is God. And the God can’t be fooled. He should be respected. In my opinion, all those who intend to deceive consumers will reap what they have sown. And I suggest that all consumers be on their guard against any false promise.

A. Study the following graphs carefully and write an essay in no less than 150 words.

B. Your essay must be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET Ⅱ.

C. Your essay should cover these three points:

1. effect of the country’s growing human population on its wildlife

2. possible reason for the effect

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF POPULATION GROWTH

As is shown by the two graphs, during the period of time from 1800 to 1900, with the rapid growth of the U.S. population the number of species no longer existing shot up, adding up to 70 in 1990. It is obvious that the population explosion resulted in the sharp decline in the wildlife of the country. What caused this phenomenon? There are, I think, two possible reasons for the effect. In the first place, the ever—increasing population needs more land to grow crops and more space to live in. Therefore, there is less and less room in the U.S. for wildlife. Secondly, a host of newly-built factories constantly discharge harmful gases and liquids, which seriously pollute the environment. This disturbs, the ecological balance, contributing to the extinction of some rare wildlife. In my opinion, two effective measures should be taken to relieve the problem. On the one hand, the birth rate in he U.S. must be put under control as the more population, the more serious the environmental pollution. On the other, the U.S. government is supposed to create as many nature reserves as possible where all the native species of wild animals can wander free and be protected from man.

30.Directions:

A. Study the following two pictures carefully and write an essay of at least 150 words.

B. Your essay must be written neatly on the ANSWER SHEET 2.

C. Your essay should meet the requirements below:

1) Describe the pictures.

2) Deduce the purpose of the drawer of the pictures.

3) Suggest counter-measures

The two pictures given inform us of the brief history of world commercial fishing. From the upper picture we learn that the year 1900 saw a quite encouraging scene of world fishing: there were a great variety of fishes, but a limited number of fishing--boats in the ocean. However, a worrying change took place in the period of time from l900 to1955. As is shown in the lower picture, with the sharp development of world commercial fishing, the ocean became crowded with different kinds of fishing--boats and hence there were few fishes in it. It is clear that a disastrous change occurred in the previous 95 years.

As far as the purposes of the drawer of the pictures are concerned, they are as follows. To begin with, he intends to warn us of the over-exploitation of marine resources, including fish, which will inevitably result in the extinction of many species of marine organisms. Secondly, he aims to draw our attention to the protection of marine resources in every possible way. Finally, the drawer wants, I think, to render the idea that the sea fish resources, which help to keep a large population from being hungry, will be completely ruined if the present situation of overfishing continues at an accelerated rate.

In my opinion, a series of counter--measures should be taken to reverse the current dangerous tendency. On the one hand, the governments throughout the world are supposed to set up as many marine nature reserves as possible to protect marine organisms. On the other hand, it is urgent that the world commercial fishing be put under control because overfishing is one of the factors which are responsible for the present situation. Only in this way can we protect marine resources from being destroyed some day.

31. Directions:

Among all the worthy feelings of mankind, love is probably the noblest, but everyone has his/her own understanding of it.

There has been a discussion recently on the issue in a newspaper. Write an essay to the newspaper to

1) show your understanding of the symbolic meaning of the picture below,

2) give a specific example, and

3) give your suggestion as to the best way to show love.

You should write about 200 words on ANSWER SHEET 2.(20 points)

As is generally believed, love is probably the noblest of all the worthy feelings of mankind. Without love there exists no association between human beings, no mutual sympathy and help, and ultimately, no responsibility to the society. Every one of us should show love to those who are in need and at the same time tends to hope to be loved. As the picture below depicts, the noble love is just a smiling lamp whose rays become brighter where it is darker. So the symbolic meaning of the cartoon is that help is most desired where one is in difficulties.

Let’s take the Project Hope for example. When a poor little girl in a remote rural area has to drop out of school on account of poverty, a small sincere contribution from the society will help her to get out of the difficulty and to continue with her schooling. Let’s have another example. The year 1998 saw a serious flood in Hubei Province. Many houses were swept away and many local inhabitants were killed or injured in it.At that time the people all over the country were united as one. A large number of contributions were raised and sent to the severely affected areas, which helped the victims to relieve their difficult situation. The two examples given above manifest that love is a lamp which is the brighter the darker a place is.

As far as my suggestion as to the best way to show love is concerned, whenever one gets in trouble, it is our duty to lend a helping hand to him. Love means help. We should never hesitate to show our love to anyone in distress. I believe that only if our society is full of love, tomorrow will be better and brighter.(288 words)
