猴子和鳄鱼
Once, a crocodile (鳄鱼) liked bananas. However, they only grew on trees and the crocodile could not reach them.
曾经,有一只鳄鱼喜欢吃香蕉。然而,香蕉是长在树上的,鳄鱼够不到。
A monkey watched the crocodile for some time and then said, “Allow me to get some bananas for you.”
一只猴子观察了鳄鱼很久,说:“我给你拿一些香蕉吧。”
The crocodile ate most of the bananas, and took some home to his wife.

“If that monkey lives on bananas,” the crocodile’s wife said, “his liver (肝) must be very tasty. Try to ask him to visit us, and then we can have a good meal of monkey liver.”

The next day, the crocodile went back to the banana tree.

“My wife is sick and she wants you to visit her,” the crocodile told the monkey.

The crocodile then carried the monkey across the river to their home.

“Tell me what your problem is,” the monkey said to her, “and I’ll suggest some medicine for you.”
猴子对她说:“告诉我你生了什么病,那样我可以给你推荐一点药。”
“The only medicine I need,” she said, “is your liver.”
她说:“我只需要一种药那就是你的肝脏。”
Thinking quickly, the monkey said, “I left my liver in a banana tree. Would you like me to get it?”

The crocodile’s wife agreed that the monkey should go and get it, so her husband carried him back to the banana tree. Then the monkey climbed to the tree and disappeared.

大马猴是不是比别的猴子耐看?
最近几天义务改作文,稍过了下rater的瘾。细看了十来篇,发现很多同学的作文有共同的问题。如果他们能修正这些,本来能有更好的结果。而这些毛病其实也并不难克服的。同时,俺也体会到rater的一些辛苦,下面说说。
首先,俺想说rater也是人。虽然ETS很贱地把GRE阅读的句子糅杂,但是反过来,GT作文的rater都喜欢看简明易懂的语言。对于使用第二语言写作的学生来说,采用简单明了的写作风格几乎是在30分钟内完整论述一个观点的唯一方式。
rater不是office软件,不能指望他们数数你的字数,在错单词的地方给你画个红杠杠,在错语法的地方给你画个绿杠杠,看看没有大碍就给你个高分。rater不可能眼睁睁看着你开头拉出一个150词的重型万金油,而且还不皱眉头。很多同学绕来绕去,非要糊弄出几十个词来才扭扭捏捏说几句切题的话。而rater是计件收费的,人家会说:“姑娘,您俺萍水相逢,您吞吞吐吐这么长时间还犹抱琵琶半遮面,俺都看不到您的一个中心两个基本点,俺咋知道您琵琶后面是不是个疤拉眼儿哩?”
rater首先要看的是你的观点,他们不可能容忍你把两个毫不相干的东西硬用“所以”连起来。rater看的是你有没有跑题,立场是不是坚定,说话是不是开门见山,逻辑上有没有纰漏,举的例子是不是能说明问题。官方的checklist里,前面六条反复说的都是观点观点观点观点。后面五条才是语言方面。孰重孰轻一目了然。下面把这个表列一下。有哪些同学在写作文的时候就前面六条拷问过自己?
扯远了,回来说大马猴。如果写一篇关于大马猴的作文——Do you agree with the following statement: 大马猴比别的猴子耐看. Use specific example and details to support your opinion.——可能出现那些问题呢?
* 不看清题目就写,开头就跑题。比如不停地说“大马猴怎么怎么聪明我们应该保护动物”,别人没问你这个。更糟的是,如果开头稀里糊涂,后面发现好的点之后是没有办法加进去的 ——如果开头没想好,可以最后再写
* 另一种跑题,是只说大马猴怎么怎么好。比如两个中心反复说“大马猴表情丰富,看着好像赵本山到郭德纲家串门;大马猴屁股红,红得好像花儿开在春风里”
——这样说粗看起来没有错,但是别的猴子也都像你说的这样,你没有说出大马猴这个品种自身的特点。题目问的是大马猴比别的猴子好看在哪里。所以这个也是跑题。
* 汉语想明白意思了,但是落到纸面上有不会表达的地方。结果编个废话填上,说“猴子真有意思闹哄哄一紧张就彼此cuddle真好玩我也要养”
——换成你熟悉的简单句
* 主段落的第一句话没有说明全部意思。很多人第二段说“我爱贝克汉姆。贝克汉姆有一双棕色眼睛。大马猴也有一双棕色眼睛”
——这句话一定要开宗明义,给rater一步到位的享受
(第一句)“首先,大马猴有一双棕色眼睛,正如我爱的贝克汉姆”
* 主段落的第二句开始匆匆举例:“比如,上次我去马戏团看大马猴,就像看到了贝克汉姆” ——你可以设法把第一句扩展为三个彼此相连的句子,第二三句对第一句形成支撑。这个是OG里提到的写法,俺个人很喜欢这个办法。如果T作文有啥秘诀,俺觉得这个就是秘诀了。比如,你可以说这双眼睛为什么好:
(第二句)“这双眼睛,清澈而明亮,Jay Chou般的单眼皮下是深邃的目光,散发着无穷的智慧,?a href="http://www.zw2.cn/zhuanti/guanyuluzuowen/" target="_blank" class="keylink">路鹉芏炼倚闹械囊磺小?/p>
(第三句)“如果这双眼睛对我说谎,我必然无力抵挡”
(第四句,这里才开始举例)“比如,上次我去马戏团看大马猴,就像看到了贝克汉姆” 可以看到二三句对主题句的支撑形成一个强论点,接下来的举例,即使浅陋也不会影响得分。这就是checklist里所说的:观点的演进。
* 主段落二的论点和主段落一一样或有重叠。不只一个人写过:“此外,大马猴的右眼也非常美丽”
——换个点写:“大马猴一身金黄的毛发也好过别的猴子,黄得好像布拉德皮特那一头金毛,随着微风忽飘忽落”
* 话说不利索。正常的论述应当是123,456,一句是一句。他来个123,234:“大马猴的尾巴长,尾巴比别的猴子长的大马猴是我所喜欢的,我喜欢大马猴的尾巴,因为这尾巴比别的猴子长”
——删掉无用的句子和从句。习惯后,直接在脑袋里删掉,这样就节省了时间。
* 用绝对化语气论述:“大马猴一定是猴子里最勤劳的”。如果一定要“一定”你需要很充分的论证这一点。但是这通常只是你的结构里的一个小点,不值得化这等功夫。
——“一定要”凑字数的话,“一定要”多用probably,慎用obsolutely、definitely。
* 对反方论述过于充分。“当然,也有人喜欢金丝猴。金丝猴群栖高山密林中,吃东西时总是吧哒嘴显得那么香甜。金丝猴是很美丽的:天蓝色的面孔上嘴大而突出,因其鼻孔极度退化,即俗称“没鼻梁子”,因而使鼻孔仰面朝天,所以又有“仰鼻猴”的别称。金丝猴的尾巴和身子差不多长,瘦长的身体上长着柔软的金色长毛,最长可达三十多厘米,披散下来就像一件金黄色的“披风”,十分漂亮。但是,...”
——“但是”太晚了。OG提到过,论述对方观点为何不成立,可以构成很强的argument,于是好多人用“正正反”或者“反正正”的论述结构。但是对对立面的观点论述不要过。一些同学的作文反段落长度超过任何一个正段落,是需要反省的。例如用反正正,第一段写得太长,结果写到第三段没有时间了,结果就是整篇文章发育不良,立场不够鲜明,严重影响分数。“当然,金丝猴的鼻子和长毛也挺好看,但是金丝猴的优点和大马猴的缺点加起来,都拼不过大马猴的优点”
* 逻辑不通。“我爱劳动者;大马猴的尾巴特别长,所以它们都是勤劳的猴子;勤劳的猴子最美”。平时没有人这样说话,但是T作文里,类似的问题反复出现。口语里不会犯的错误,笔头上也不要犯。尤其不要以为别人会专注于你的复杂句式而忽略你的逻辑。
——看看自己的“因为所以”前后到底能不能对上。
* 糊弄一个结尾,本来好好的一篇文章,像兔子尾巴一样戛然而止了。“综上,因为大马猴
的眼睛美屁股红尾巴长,它比别的猴子耐看。”
——这个倒不是什么大问题。只不过无意义的结果不会加分,反而耽误了时间。有这个时间,还不如发展一个谈金丝猴不好看的反向论证段落。可以考虑养成不写结尾的好习惯。或者你可以写个复杂点的:“大马猴的毛发好像一望无际的大森林,塌塌的鼻子好像横断山,两只眼睛好像淡水湖咸水湖。啊!我爱祖国的大好河山,我也爱祖国的大马猴。”
