篇三:The Sun Rising日出

The Sun Rising

by: John Donne

Busy old fool, unruly Sun,

Why dost thou thus,

Through windows, and through curtains, call on us ?

Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run ?

Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide

Late school-boys and sour prentices,

Go tell court-huntsmen that the king will ride,

Call country ants to harvest offices ;

Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime,

Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.

Thy beams so reverend, and strong

Why shouldst thou think ?

I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink,

But that I would not lose her sight so long.

If her eyes have not blinded thine,

Look, and to-morrow late tell me,

Whether both th' Indias of spice and mine

Be where thou left'st them, or lie here with me.

Ask for those kings whom thou saw'st yesterday,

And thou shalt hear, "All here in one bed lay."

She's all states, and all princes I ;

Nothing else is ;

Princes do but play us ; compared to this,

All honour's mimic, all wealth alchemy.

Thou, Sun, art half as happy as we,

In that the world's contracted thus ;

Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be

To warm the world, that's done in warming us.

Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere ;

This bed thy center is, th(来自:WWw.SmhaiDa.com 海达范文网:lovers,on,the,sun)ese walls thy sphere.[1]

当宇宙在这样一个世界里聚拢;

篇四:ON LOVE

On Love

At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet. Love is an art which involves deep emotion. It is a pure and lofty desire in one's innermost heart. Different people have different interpretations of love. I’d like to share my views about love from a few poems that follow.

“A Red, Red Rose” depicts the traditional love. It is a simple and classical love poem. We can see that a male speaker tells the departue with his lover. The poem begins with a quatrain containing two similes. Burns compares his love with a springtime blooming rose and then with a sweet melody. The first simile makes the lover's image is extraordinarily beautiful, pure and full of youthful vitality. The second simile gives the readers the space of imagination that readers seem to see the beautiful dancing lover. In the hearts of the poet, his lover has not only the charming appearance, but also a soft and beautiful heart. She is perfect.

The second and third stanzas become increasingly complex, ending with the metaphor of the “sands of life,” or hourglass. On the one hand we are given the image of his love lasting until the seas run dry and the rocks melt with the sun, wonderfully poetic images. As we all know the sea is wide and edgless, the water of it will never dry. And the rock is extremely firm and nothing can move it and will never melt. We can infer that the poet’s love is so sincere, firm and deep. On the other hand

Burns reminds us of the passage of time and the changes that result. That recalls the first stanza and its image of a red rose, newly sprung in June, which we know from experience will change and decay with time. These are complex and competing images, typical of the more mature Robert Burns.

The final stanza wraps up the poem’s complexity with a farewell and a promise of return. And the word “only” even more shows his deep love. The speaker again addresses his beloved, nothing that though he must leave her for a while he will return for her even he must travel ten thousand miles. It is a common phenomeno that a man would make promises when he is going to part with his lover. Repetition occurs in the first and second lines, and hyperbole occurs in the last line. Flame of love in the hearts of poet burns strongly, he desires a good result. From the poem, we know that love should be noble.

“A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning” depicts the current love.“A Valediction: forbidding Mourning” is one of John Donne’s most famous and simplest poems and also probably his most direct statement of his ideal of spiritual love. In this poem, the speaker explains that he is forced to spend time apart from his lover, but before he leaves, he tells her that their farewell should not be the occasion for mourning and sorrow. In the same way that virtuous men die mildly and without complaint, he says, so they should leave without “tear-floods” and “sigh-tempests,”

for to publicly announce their feelings in such a way would profane their love. The speaker says that when the earth moves, it brings “harms and fears,” but when the spheres experience “trepidation,” though the impact is greater, it is also innocent. The love of “dull sublunary lovers” cannot survive separation, but it removes that which constitutes the love itself; but the love he shares with his beloved is so refined and “Inter-assured of the mind” that they need not worry about missing “eyes, lips, and hands.”

Though he must go, their souls are still one, and, therefore, they are not enduring a breach, they are experiencing an “expansion”; in the same way that gold can be stretched by beating it “to aery thinness,” the soul they share will simply stretch to take in all the space between them. If their souls are separate, he says, they are like the feet of a compass: His lover’s soul is the fixed foot in the center, and his is the foot that moves around it. The firmness of the center foot makes the circle that the outer foot draws perfect: “Thy firmness makes my circle just, / And makes me end, where I begun.”

Actually, complete love is not only united the bodies of a couple but also their soul. Such spiritual love is phenomenal, metaphysical, keeping the lovers together spiritually regardless of distance between them.

John Donne uses his metaphysical wit kto develop a series of arguments to console his wife on the eve of his departure. He tries to

convinces his wife that spiritual love cannot be affected by physcial distance. Then he shows her that since their souls are one, distance will only increase their love and make it more beautiful just like gold hammered and spread out into a thin sheet. If the first two arguments are not enough to comfort his wife, he argues that he and his wife like the legs of a compass. In each case, the metaphor he uses makes the readers to see the logic behind comparisons that may seem far-fetched at first. “The compass” is essentially the demand that John Donne askes his wife to satisfy. He asks his wife to be firm to their love. Actually, this is the male control over women.

“Sonnet 18” depicts the true love. Of Shakespeare's sonnets in the text, this is one of the most moving lyric poems that I have ever read. There is great use of imagery within the sonnet. This is not to say that the rest of the poems in the book were not good, but this to me was the best, most interesting, and most beautiful of them. It is mainly due to the simplicity and loveliness of the poem’s praise of the beloved woman that it has guaranteed its place in my mind, and heart. The speaker of the poem opens with a question that is addressed to the beloved, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" This question is comparing her to the summer time of the year. It is during this time when the flowers are blooming, trees are full of leaves, the weather is warm, and it is generally thought of as an enjoyable time during the year. The following eleven

lines in the poem are also dedicated to similar comparisons between the beloved and summer days. In lines 2 and 3, the speaker explains what mainly separates the young woman from the summer's day: she is "more lovely and more temperate." Summer's days tend toward extremes: they are sometimes shaken by "rough winds" which happens and is not always as welcoming as the woman.

However in line 4, the speaker gives the feeling again that the summer months are often to short by saying, "And summer’s lease hath too short a date." In the summer days, the sun, "the eye of heaven" , often shines "too hot," or too dim, "his gold complexion dimmed" , that is there are many hot days during the summer but soon the sun begins to set earlier at night because autumn is approaching. Summer is moving along too quickly for the speaker, its time here needs to be longer, and it also means that the chilling of autumn is coming upon us because the flowers will soon be withering, as "every fair from fair sometime declines." The final portion of the sonnet tells how the beloved differs from the summer in various respects. Her beauty will be one that lasts forever, "Thy eternal summer shall not fade." , and never end or die. In the couplet at the bottom, the speaker explains how that the beloved's beauty will accomplish this everlasting life unlike a summer. And it is because her beauty is kept alive in this poem, which will last forever. It will live "as long as men can breathe or eyes can see." On the surface,

阅读理解联合演练(2)

阅读理解。阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 In 1993, New York State ordered stores to charge a deposit on beverage (=drink) containers. Within a year, consumers had returned millions of aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles. Plenty of companies were eager to accept the aluminum and glass as raw material for new products, but because few could figure out what to do with the plastic, much of it wound end up buried in landfills(垃圾填埋场). The problem was not limited to New York. Unfortunately, there were too few uses for second-hand plastic.

Today, one out of five plastic soda bottles is recycled in the United States. The reason for the change is that now there are dozens of companies across the country buying discarded plastic soda bottles and turning them into fence post, paint brushes, etc.

As the New York experience shows, recycling involves more than simply separating valuable materials from the rest of the rubbish. A discard remains a discard until somebody figures out how to give it a second life — and until economic arrangements exist to give that second life value. Without adequate markets to absorb materials collected for recycling, throwaways actually depress prices for used materials. Shrinking landfill space and rising costs for burying and burning rubbish are forcing local governments to look more closely at recycling. In many areas, the East Coast especially, recycling is already the least expensive waste-management option. For every ton of waste recycled, a city avoids paying for its disposal, which, in parts of New York, amounts to savings of more than $100 per ton. Recycling also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and reduces the pollution control and energy costs of industries that make recycled products by giving them a more refined raw material.

6. What regulation was issued by New York State concerning beverage containers?

A. A fee should be charged on used containers for recycling.

B. Throwaways should be collected by the state for recycling.

C. Consumers had to pay for beverage containers and could get their money back on returning them.

D. Beverage companies should be responsible for collecting and reusing discarded plastic soda bottles. 7 The returned plastic bottles in New York used to .

A. be turned into raw materials

B. be separated from other rubbish

C. have a second-life value

D. end up somewhere underground

8. The key problem in dealing with returned plastic beverage containers is .

A. how to reduce their recycling costs

B. to sell them at a profitable price

C. how to turn them into useful things

D. to lower the prices for used materials

9. Recycling has become the first choice for the disposal of rubbish because .

A. recycling causes little pollution

It's such a happylooking library, painted yellow, decorated with palmtree stickers and sheltered from the Florida sun by its own roof. About the size of a microwave oven, it's pedestrianfriendly, too, waiting for book lovers next to a sidewalk in Palm Beach Country Estates, along the northern boundary of Palm Beach Gardens. It's a library built with love.

A year ago, shortly after Janey Henriksen saw a Brian Williams report about the Little Free Library organization, a Wisconsinbased nonprofit that aims to promote literacy and build a sense of community in a neighborhood by making books freely available, she announced to her family of four, “That's what we're going to do for our spring break!”

Son Austin, now a 10thgrader, didn't see the point of building a library that resembles a mailbox. But Janey insisted, and husband Peter unwillingly got to work. The 51year-old owner of a ship supply company modified a small wooden house that he'd built years earlier for daughter Abbie's toy horses, and made a door of glass.

After adding the library's final touches (装点), the family hung a signboard on the front, instructing users to “take a book, return a book,” and making the Henriksen library, now one of several hundred like it nationwide and among more than 2,500 in the world, the only Little Free Library in Palm Beach County.

They stocked it with 20 or so books they'd already read, a mix of science fiction, reference titles, novels and kids' favorites. “I told them, keep in mind that you might not see it again,” said Janey, a stayathome mom.

Since then, the collection keeps replenishing (补充) itself, thanks to ongoing donations from borrowers. The library now gets an average of five visits a day. The project's best payoff, says Peter, are the thankyou notes left behind. “We had no idea in the beginning that it would be so popular.”
