On the second floor lived a little girl and her grandmother; the little girl’s parents had died, and she lived together with her grandma. In order to rescue the little girl, the grandmother was burned to death, leaving the little girl crying for help loudly.

How could people enter the house? At the very moment, a man carrying a ladder rushed to the

flames and got into the window. When he appeared again in the eyes of the people, the little girl was in his arms. He gave the child to the crowd, and then disappeared into the night.

This little girl had no family. Two months later a meeting was held to find a person to adopt (收养) the girl. A teacher was willing to adopt this child, and said she could give her the best education; a farmer wanted to adopt this child, saying that village life would let the child grow up healthily and happily; a rich man said, “I can give the child everything that others can do.”

A lot of people who wanted to adopt this child said about many benefits of their adopting the child. But the little girl’s face had no expression. At this time, a man, through the crowd, walked straight in front of the little girl, and opened his arms for the little girl. People were puzzled, and they found that the man had terrible scars on his arms. 21. What did the man do when he had saved the little girl? A. He returned to his work.

B

As you are growing and changing, you have more responsibilities and also more freedom to spend time with other people. While you may feel ready to make your own decisions about where and when to go, your parents will put limits on you. So you may find you are arguing with your parents more than you used to. The reason why your parents do this is that they care about you and want to protect you from danger.

Here are some tips for how to avoid and handle arguments with your parents:

【1】 Discuss the rules ahead of time and not at the last minute. This way you will be able to tell what they will say yes or no to before you make plans. Your parents can also explain to you why each rule is in place. Ask them to give you the chance to explain how the rules make you feel and suggest what you think are right rules. Your parents may be willing to listen to your ideas and use them when making rules that you both agree on.

【2】 Try to remain calm when your parents say no to something. You will show your parents that

you are responsible and mature (成熟的) by talking instead of shouting.

【3】 Spend time with your family. Some teens argue with their parents over the amount of time they spend with their friends. Communicate with each other and make some special family time so that you can all enjoy the time you spend at home. Suggest activities that your whole family will enjoy together such as going on a hike, taking a bike ride, or going to the beach. 25. Your parents limit your activity mainly because they ______. A. are worried about your safety B. are afraid it will affect your study C. think the thing you’ll do is bad D. want you to be with them at home

26. We can learn from the passage that the right rules are those .

A. you have to obey B. you and your parents have discussed C. your parents make

D. you and your parents can both accept

27. When your parents prevent you from doing something, you should .

A. argue with them B. control yourself C. fight for your freedom D. not listen to them

28. What’s the purpose of the family activities in the last paragraph?

A. To build up their bodies. B. To visit more places of interest.

C. To make parents happy.

D. To make children and their parents get along better.

C

The night is clear and the air is crisp; snow falls gently on the ground. Tonight is Christmas Eve. Off in the distance I hear the voice of approaching carolers(唱颂歌的人). I quickly close the door shutting out the sounds of Christmas. Tonight is just too painful as I think of “Christmas without them”.

Is Christmas ever the same when we are without our loved ones? The traditions I have loved since childhood have changed into something new and unexpected. As an adult, I find myself with feelings of a five-year-old kid, scared and alone. I have no mother or father to comfort me. Tears flow and I feel my heart breaking. Sometimes, I find myself standing in the middle of strangers with tears running down my cheeks. Some people, forgetting they are strangers, stop to offer a knowing smile of understanding. And I begin to realize I am not alone with these types of feelings. All of a sudden the memories come flooding back.

How fortunate I am to have such wonderful memories of my parents and the times we shared when I was young. Just as quickly as the memories brought tears ,the same memories resurfaced to spread joy. Memories have a way of making the emptiness bearable. I remember. I smile.

My thoughts once again return to the children. Their sounds of singing grow closer. I open my door to find their half-frozen faces, smiling brightly at me.

Christmas without them may never be the same, but from out of the darkness pleasant memories flood my heart. I can almost hear my parents’ voices telling me the story of this most holy night. Like a message from above, I listen as the children sing, “Sleep in heavenly peace”. 32. The writer shut the door at Christmas Eve probably because . A. he/she missed his/her parents B. he/she was listening to music C. it was snowing heavily outside D. he/she disliked children 33. How does the writer feel during Christmas now according to the second paragraph?

A. changed suddenly B. appeared again

C. remained for a long time

D. died out slowly

35. What would be the best title of this passage?

A. Unforgettable historical facts B. Traditions of Christmas

C. Approaching carolers

D. Christmas without family

Scientists often see the first ten years of a child’s life as the “window of opportunity.” 36 And studies show that the following activities can be good for their brain greatly.

37

Free playtime has always been an important part of “being a kid”, but it is also important to a child’s development. “Free play” not only helps kids develop different skills, it also helps them develop into happy healthy adults in the future.

Read with kids

Reading has long been known to improve children’s intelligence. 38 For parents who don’t have much time, just keeping your kids around books goes a long way too.

Put kids to bed early

39 Preschool children should get at least eleven hours of sleep and kids up to age 12 should try to get at least ten hours of sleep.

Learn a second language

Early studies in this field have shown that bilingual (双语的) kids can perform better under pressure. Young children can learn new languages with nearly perfect fluency (流利) and pronunciation.

Praise good effort not intelligence.

Your kids may be smart but you should mainly praise the effort they put into tasks. Kids, who are praised on intelligence, often feel it is a fixed quality, and mistakes or failures badly hurt their self-confidence. Kids who are praised on effort often focus more on learning. 40 A. Play some helpful games. B. Give them enough playtime.

C. And they are not afraid to fail and try again. D. Kids still need time away from the TV to do homework.

E. Kids who read often develop earlier writing and number skills as well.

By using an iPod, we can listen to music and download a lot learning materials. Clearly, it’s very useful to our study. Some students, instead, bring their iPods to the classroom and listen to music with earphones, which make the teachers and other students badly upset. Some of them even waste time in class played video games.

In my opinions, we should make the good use of iPods to get success in study. The classroom is a place when students study. Beside, the school should make a rule to guide us students to use iPods proper.

E. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): ( 14分)

Bamboo is just a big piece of grass. It grows fast and is very thin. The oak is a tree. It grows slow, straight and strong. It's even thought to be a symbol of strength.

A few years ago there was a big storm in Britain. It destroyed many old oaks that people thought The British were surprised. How could thin, fragile(脆的) bamboo trees survive a big storm when strong oaks could not?

The reason is flexibility(柔韧性,灵活性). The oak trees fought against the wind with their strength but the wind turned out to be stronger. The bamboo trees didn't. Their flexibility allowed them to bend and let the wind pass by.

Life is full of changes and we really can't stop them. Recently some students at my school were upset when they got a new English teacher. They liked their old teacher and they didn't like the new one who had a different personality and a different style of teaching. Some students behaved(表现) like oaks. They refused to change and just stopped learning. Other students behaved like bamboo. It's no surprise that the marks of the 'oak' students went down but the marks of the 'bamboo' students went up.

When changes come in your life, don't fight against them and break like an oak, bend a little like bamboo and you will achieve success.

91. What is the oak thought to be ?

92. What did a big storm do to many old oak trees in Britain a few years ago?

93. Does the underlined word 'survived' in paragraph two mean 'continued to live' or 'stopped

growing'?

94. How do bamboo trees show their flexibility in a storm?
