On Military Training

There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic whether students should

attend military training in China .

Opinions on this issue differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They say that the training can not only build up students' bodies but also temper their willpower. Besides, through the training, students can develop their team-spirit and sense of discipline.Others, however, hold the opposite view. They say that a short period of training as students are having now cannot work well in building up their bodies or strengthen their will. Instead, we should lay emphasis on their daily

exercise and activities for such purpose. What's more, a sudden increase of intense physical exercise, especially during summer, does harm to students' health and may even cause deaths. What happened in the past years has proved this.

Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the former point of view. Military training is not only a means to strengthen student's physique and willpower, but also an effective way to enhance their sense of national defense and foster their patriotism. Though some deaths happened during the training, we should not give up eating for fear of choking. Besides, the deaths are perfect evidence that students need more such training. Of course, measures should be taken to ensure that the least harm is done to the trainees.

For another, the training acquaints them with the basic skills in the army. However, others strongly oppose this practice, regarding it as a waste of time, because they see no connection between the training and the students‘ future jobs.

“Desk Culture”

Sitting in a classroom at college, you occasionally catch sight of something written on the desk, which is an index of some college students‘ psychology and becomes part of the campus culture. This is why it is called ―desk culture‖.

Desk culture has its substantial content. On most occasions they are definitions, formulas, or English expressions kept either for memory, for convenience because they have no paper at hand, or because they have them for a special ―service‖—to provide information for cheating on exams.

Sometimes there are also some ragged verses, drawing or even dirty words created by some naughty or sentimental ones, made for joking or expressing their own feelings. Occasionally there are some mottos for encouragement, or some senseless marks habitually made to kill time when they are bored or absent-minded in class. In a word, all these things contribute to the flourishing desk culture.

As far as I am concerned, desk culture indirectly indicates college students‘ mental attitudes. It is, for whatever reasons, at least a destruction of the perfection of the desks. So colleges concerned should take effective measures against it and put more emphasis on quality education and spiritual civilization.

I am writing to express my concern over the library service on campus. As a major in English, I find that most of the books in English in the library are outdated. So far, I have not come across a single
