The famous West Lake is like a brilliant pearl embedded(把……植入) in the beautiful and fertile（肥沃） shores（岸） of the East China Sea near the mouth of the Hangzhou Bay. The lake covers an area of 5.6 square kilometers. The view of the West Lake is simply enchanting（迷人的）, which offers many attractions for tourists at home and abroad. I hope all of you will appreciate this famous place.

Then, I’d like to introduce the famous Ten Scenes to you.

1. Spring Dawn（拂晓） on the Su Causeway (苏堤春晓)

It is a thin trip of land nearly three kilometers covered with peach and weeping willow trees（垂柳）. In spring, with the lakeside sparking（破晓） in the morning dew（露水）, birds cheerfully chirping（鸣叫） among swaying（摇摆） willow branches, the scent（香味） of peach blossoms（花簇） wafting（飘送） through the air, you will ask whether you are in the midst of paradise.

2. Orioles（莺） Singing in the Willows (柳浪闻莺)

At dusk, with the sun slowly drifting into the lake on the west, a huge bell at Jingci temple, will ring its farewell to the last sunbeam（阳光光束） of the day with the prolonged（持续很久的） bell sound reverberating（回荡） across the lake the peaceful and scared air offers you a perfect occasion for meditation（冥想）.

6. Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake (平湖秋月)

At the western end of Bai Causeway is located a lakeside park which houses a stone tablet（碑） bearing the etched（风化的） calligraphy（笔迹） of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, which reads: “Autumn Moon on Calm Lake”. The lake is a special place to appreciate the moon and effect of moonlight on the land. The moon seems especially bright over the water. The hills look purplish（略带紫色的） bathed in the moonlight. The best time for nighttime viewing is on Mid-Autumn Day.

7. Leifeng Pagoda in Evening Glow (雷峰夕照)

Leifeng pagoda is another renowned scenic spot in Hangzhou, originally built in the 10th

century. Leifeng pagoda used to stand in front of Jingci temple on nanping mountain, though failed to stand the test of time, the collapsed（折叠） in early 1900s. In 2002, leifeng pagoda was reconstructed;

then comes back the typical sunset Glow over leifeng pagoda.

8. Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月)

On the south side of the largest of the three manmade islands in the Outer Lake, there are three hollow（空的） stone pagodas rising from the water, each with five openings. The three stone towers were first built in Yuanyou 4th year (1089) of the Song Dynasty, with the wonderful scenery of “one moon in the sky having three reflection in the lake”. On the night of the Autumn Moon Festival, the three pagodas are the best attraction for moon spectators.

9. Lingering(拖延的) Snow on the Broken Bridge (断桥残雪)

It is the most romantic scene of the ten mat-see（黯淡无光的）. The stone arched broken bridge is where the character of a famous Chinese folktale Xu Xian and a beautiful girl, who is actually a white snake, first met and fell in love with each other. After a snowfall, when the snow on the more exposed（裸露的） side has melted, with the shade side remaining white, it looks as if along white belt has been ripped（扯开） apart on the thus earning the name “melting snow on the broken bridge”.

10. Twin Peaks Piercing（穿透） the Clouds (双峰插云)

Graze at the skies above the West Lake, you will be rewarded with sight of tow limestone（石灰石） mountains past the northern edge of the lake one to the northeast and one to the northwest, five kilometers apart. On a drizzling（下毛毛雨） day spring or autumn, the tow（牵引） peaks come and go amongst drifting rain clouds.

荷花是澳门特别行政区的区花，也是有“泉城”美誉的山东省会济南和孔孟之乡济宁以及广西壮族自治区“荷城”贵港的市花。在济南三大名盛之一的大明湖里有十多种上好的荷花。苏州的园林比如拙政园里，也有许多婀娜多姿的荷花，像仙女一样，亭亭玉立，香远益清！

【荷花的花语】：荷花的花语有中西方两种版本，其中西方中认为荷花的花语是信仰，而在中国荷花被崇为君子、男女好合，夫妻恩爱！

【花语由来】在婆罗门教的神话中，创造之神据说是在毗湿奴入定时，从其肚脐中生出的莲花中钻出来的。居住在印度次大陆中部的比罗尔族在解释世界起源时也有相似的说法：“最初，天下皆水，有莲生出水面。是时巨神居于阴间，经莲茎出至水上，以莲花为座！”

荷花又有“芙蕖”、“芙蓉”、“莲花”、“藕花”等名称，花朵硕大而优美，色彩有粉红和白色两种，有单瓣和复瓣之分，单瓣约十几片，瓣如羹匙，有平行脉纹，花中心有莲蓬和花蕊，叶大如伞，叶芽如梭，莲似漏斗，梗若曲铁。又因为“荷”与“和”是同音，故以荷花为题材的画也颇多，如把梅花与荷花画在一起称“和和美美”，还有“和合二仙”、“一团和气”等等。

历史美誉

最早与莲有关的艺术品，也是把莲与神结合在一起的，是一尊头上戴着莲花的裸体女神像，在印度的恒河流域出土，是公元前3000年的遗物。文献中有关印度莲花女神的记载，最早见于印度的吠陀文献，说莲神生于莲花，站在莲花上，戴着莲花的花环！

莲与文化关系最深的是中国，在中国莲花被崇为君子，自古以来，中国人便喜爱这种植物，认为它是洁身自好、不同流合污的高尚品德的象征，因此诗人有“莲生淤泥中，不与泥同调”之赞。在中国文学里，与莲有关的诗词歌赋不计其数，在民俗中，中国有许多与莲有关的话语，莲有一蒂二花者称并蒂莲，以象男女好合，夫妻恩爱。喜联常有“比翼鸟永栖常青树，并蒂花久开勤俭家”等等。又如藕断丝连，用于指男女虽然分手，但情意未绝。莲谐音“廉”（洁）、“连”（生），民俗有“一品清廉”，“连生贵子”等谐音取意！

起源

“荷”被称为“活化石”，是被子植物中起源最早的植物之一。在人类出现以前，大约十亿年前，地球大部分被海洋、湖泊及沼泽覆盖。当时，气候温湿，高达数十米的蕨类植物遍布地球各个角落。大部分种子植物无法生存，只有少数生命力极强的种子植物生长在这个恐龙、蕨类植物称霸的地球上。

莲子

其中，有一种今天我们称为“荷花”的水生植物，经受住了大自然的考验，在中国的黑龙江、黄河、长江流域及北半球的沼泽湖泊中顽强地生存下来。

大约过了一亿多年，原始人类开始出现。人类为了生存，采集野果充饥，不久便发现这种“荷花”的野果和根节（即莲子与藕）不仅可以食用，而且甘甜清香，味美可口。渐渐地，“荷花”这一人类生存的粮食来源便深深地印刻在我们的祖先——原始人类的心中，成为人类生存的象征。

荷花

一直到公元前五六千年的新石器时代，随着农耕文化的出现，人类对荷花开始了进一步的了解。当时的人类为了生活上对水的需求，一般都定居在河岸湖畔或有天然泉水的沼泽地带，而这些地带恰是野生荷花主要的分布区域。从出土文物看：在山东省发掘的“仰韶文化”房基遗址，发现室内台面上有炭化粮食和两粒莲子，经测定，距今有五千年的历史。人类在不断的生产劳动中，对朝夕相处的荷花的生长习性、生存环境等积累了丰富的感性认识，为中国古老的荷花文化的产生发展奠定的良好的基础。

在地球上，还有野生的荷花。古植物学家徐仁教授，曾于40年前在柴达木盆地发现荷叶化石，距今至少有1000万年。1973年在浙江余姚县距今7000年前的“河姆渡文化”遗址出土的文物中，发现有荷花的花粉化石；同年又在河南郑州市距今5000多年前的“仰韶文化”遗址中发现两粒炭化莲子。西周初期（公元前11世纪），古人食用蔬菜约40余种，藕是其中之一。《峪经》中有“腮有荷华”之句，意指祖国大地上凡有沼泽水域的地方，都生长着荷花。中国是世界上栽培莲花最多的国家之一。

荷花，亦称“莲”，睡莲科，原产于南部亚洲广大地带，从越南到阿富汗都有，一般分布在中亚、西亚、北美、印度、中国、日本等亚热带和温带地区。中国早在三千多年前即有栽培，现今在辽宁及浙江均发现过碳化的古莲子，可见历史之悠久。
