My Views on the Classics

Nowadays, an increasing number of people, especially the senior citizen hold that we should stick to the classics of our country because we should maintain our distinctive Chinese character. On the other hand, others insist that we should not be confined to classics because they are old and outdated. As far as I am concerned, the classics are the precious national treasure, nothing can substitute them. Some reasons are as follows.

First, the classics are the treasures that handed down from our ancestors. In all walks of our lives, they play an important and beneficial role in our personal and national development. For example, reading classic novels or essays can help us have an acquaintance with history or the author, know more about the society, the people or the national condition at that time.

Second, by reading classics, we can drastically elevate our aesthetic taste and deepen the understanding of the glorious history of the Chinese traditional culture. Through the classics, we will be fully aware of the important role the classics play in broadening one’s vision. Therefore, we should start reading and studying the treasuries our ancestors left and absorbing the essence of those classical works. We should also advocate to the public the importance of classics so that an increasing number of general people can enjoy the pleasure of reading.

Third, classic works are full of great values from which we can acquire some useful ethnics and knowledge, broadening our horizon. They are parts of our cultural heritage freely available to everyone in the world, eiching our lives in one way or another. Once we have gone into one classic novel, we will be fascinated with the stories, feeling interesting, funny and beneficial. They convey the profound thoughts, rich emotions and unique insights into the characters, which can take us beyond our limited experiences of life to show us what the life is like at that time. Thus, they can deepen our understanding of our modern lives.

In conclusion, classic works are of great significance, and are indispensable in our daily life. We should advocate popularizing them in many ways instead of replacing them by latest ones.
