题目: Ode to the love letter
正文:
The love letter-Mulled over or flashy inspiration. Etched by hand on paper chosen at whim or for a reason. Sometimes scented. Sometimes blurred with tears or smeared with a lipstick seal. Always remembered.
The telegram-Short. To the point. Big thoughts in few words. Delivered direct. From the heart. From anywhere. Tangible.
The mix-tape-Painstakingly recorded from radio or cassettes, expertly rewound or fast-forwarded to just the right spot. Dubbed with a tinny microphone that necessitated the cringeable, fake-sexy ‘radio’ voice. Lovingly programmed, wrapped in plastic and finished with a hand-drawn sleeve.
The… SMS?
How do we show we care, now, and does it mean the same?
Facebook pages of some friends are littered with romantic tributes. The messages don’t conform to any literary style other than the glib-web-way, and punctuation marks are used as abstract symbols of emotion, not structure.
Mobile phone inboxes fill with similar such communiqué, all babe, huni, luv, xxx’s or pictures of scenes that beg, ‘wish you were here…’
Phone conversations ramble, heavy with cliché, or are stunted by the surrounds of the caller who might be distracted by fellow bus passengers or the people on TV.
Communication today is cheap.
But has this cheapened the meaning?
Communication today is also less tangible than it has ever been.
Has it lost its substance?
I send flowers to people I care about. Sometimes, the bouquets bear a small card with a hand-scrawled message. For birthdays and special occasions, I’ll take the time pick a card from the selection replicated in every other shop that’s “says something special” about me and my unique relationship with the receiver. I’ll even compose an inscription of import.
I keep returned replies in boxes, and sift through them occasionally when I’m looking for a memory.
Yet, I have never sat down to compose a sonnet to a person that I love. Or devote a poem. Or write a song. I don’t have the time, and I don’t know the way.
Have we lost the art of expressing love?Or is there something to be said for ease of expression?
Today's thoughts are prompted by the scientific scramble currently underway to 'save' digital art from destruction. And my recent discovery Coco Chanel designed her famous 2.55 handbag with a secret, love letter compartment.
So how do you show someone you care in a 21st Century world? Does an sms message mean the same as the love letter? Can an MMS tell a thousand words? Are we at risk of losing our love-sharing skills?
