It’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, Berlin was a city split (分开) into two by the Berlin Wall. I’ll never forget how people were excited as the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Since then, Berlin has become one of the coolest cities in Europe. Here are the main reasons why I think Berlin is cool.

It’s Berlin has cheap hotels and everyday objects. You don’t have to worry about spending too much money when visiting Berlin.

It has fantastic festivals. Berlin knows how to give parties, and there is a festival here every month of the year. Perhaps the most famous is the Berlin International Film Festival.

It has great architecture (建筑设计). Berlin has beautiful architecture of its own. The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 18th century, is one of the city’s most famous buildings, symbolizing more than 200 years of history. The TV Tower is as good as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the London Eye.

The art scene is flourishing (繁荣). Berlin is a city of living art. Artists are allowed to create works of art on the sides of buildings.

If you want to visit an affordable European city with culture and lots of colors, Berlin is the place to be. What are you waiting for? Get to Europe’s coolest city before everyone else discovers it.

These questions usually help you understand the conversation or the passage. Then listen carefully to the first sentence. It usually tells you the main idea of the passage. When you’re listening, try to do some thinking and take some notes, such as:

In this way, you may understand the passage better. Please remember not to think about one or two words for a

. We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they said “sorry” up to eight times a day.

After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of

always saying “please” and “thank you” is quite false (错误

的) because it is impossible for a person to always feel that

he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.

Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of

two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or

they are not polite at all and express their true feelings

directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that

they are always happy and having to please others. But

sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they

are prevented from saying what they truly think.

( )1. What don’t the British people often do?

A. Eat fish and chips. B. Have no quite good manners.

C. Be polite to others. D. Talk about the weather.

( )2. What do the British people say up to eight times every

day?

A. Hello. B. Thank you. C. I don’t know. D. Sorry. ( )3. What does the writer think are the reasons why the British people are so polite?

It’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, Berlin was a city split (分开) into two by the Berlin Wall. I’ll never forget how people were excited as the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Since then, Berlin has become one of the coolest cities in Europe. Here are the main reasons why I think Berlin is cool.

It’s affordable. Berlin has cheap hotels and everyday objects.

The Brandenburg Gate, built in the 18th century, is one of the city’s most famous buildings. It’s the symbol of more than 200 years of history. The TV Tower is as good as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the London Eye.

The art scene is flourishing (繁荣). Berlin is a city of living art. Artists are allowed to create works of art on the sides of buildings.

If you want to visit an affordable European city with culture and lots of colours, Berlin is the place to be. What are you waiting for? Get to Europe’s coolest city before everyone else discovers it.

Without a man, there would be no “happiest place on earth”, also known as Disneyland. That man was Walt Disney.

Disney was born in 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he enjoyed drawing and even sold his pictures to his neighbours. In 1918, Disney joined the Red Cross and drove an ambulance (救护车) in France during World War I. After the war ended, Disney started making short cartoons in Kansas City, but soon he used up all his money. He decided to get a job in Hollywood. He went to California with only $20 with him.

It took a while, but Disney began to enjoy success with his cartoons. He created Mickey Mouse, the most famous cartoon character (人物) ever. Then in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out and it was a huge success. During the following years, Disney made many more movies that we still watch today, including Pinocchio, Dumbo, and Bambi.

In the 1940s, Disney had an idea of building a fun park for families and the idea grew bigger and bigger ... Years after Disney first had the idea, the first Disneyland opened in 1955 in

Anaheim, California. At that time, the ticket cost a dollar. By 1965, 50 million visitors had visited Disneyland.

Disney died in 1966, 5 years before the opening of his next dream park, Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

If you ever visit one of the Disney parks, or go to a Disney movie, think of the man who started it all.
