篇一：Tired of Being 'Stuck' in Your Relationship

Relationships can go up and down like a roller coaster, whether or not you are impacted by ADHD. In the down times it may be hard to envision a better future, leading you and your partner to simply 'get stuck' and have difficulty making thrings better. You can help things along by embracing change, rather than letting fear or anger get the better of you. Here are 14 tips to help you create the change you wish to have happen:

Don’t just focus on your relationship: When times are hard it’s tempting to focus so intensely on your relationship that you can suffocate it…and yourself. Remember that you are unique from your partner and that to stay strong you must have separate interests and activities. Use these to provide relief from the problems that you face with your partner and keep from becoming too dependent.

Allow yourself to be vulnerable: The things that we do to protect ourselves, such as respond in anger, build walls, and retreat, are all things that hurt our relationship because they are divisive. To move yourselves forward in a positive direction you must risk being vulnerable.

Don’t do it alone: Though it sounds obvious, too many people get caught up in the idea that if they only try hard enough, they can make the relationship better. The reality is you can’t change a relationship between two people all by yourself. Your partner must be involved if you are going to dramatically change direction in your relationship. Further, you will also do better if you have the support of others beyond your spouse, as well.

Be realistic—change takes time and lots of effort: Many spouses of ADHD partners, for example, think that once their partner starts taking medication then everything will get better. The more realistic approach is to understand that medication, if one takes it, is only the beginning of a much longer process of learning new skills and making improvements in ADHD symptom management.

Understand that you are not in control of anyone other than yourself: This is a humbling thought—that no matter how hard we try, or how much we want a more loving relationship, we simply won’t get it if our partner is not also willing to put in the effort to change. But, even though we don’t control others, we do control ourselves. Make sure to contribute your ‘best self’ to your relationship.

Change only happens when you are ready for it: For some, that comes with the realization that ADHD is part of your relationship. For others, it may be a traumatic experience or hitting ‘rock bottom’ that shifts your willingness to acknowledge that you, yourself, must make important changes. In all cases, because you are in charge of making your own changes, it only happens when you are ready for it.

Change can be scary: Face it, we are creatures of habit. And what’s in the ‘new’ future we are trying to build is an unknown. What happens if we can’t do it? Will the future really look better? If we succeed, will we slowly revert to the past? Change—because it throws us in an unfamiliar and often uncomfortable direction, can feel very scary. It’s still worth It, though, to pursue the relationship you long for.

Remember that failures are good: They are an indication that you are taking chances as you seek to improve things…and failures also provide an opportunity to learn.

Be open to listening to your partner: Chances are you may think you’ve heard it all before. But if you are in ‘change mode’ then by definition you haven’t. Listen carefully to what your partner says as changes start in your relationship… for the more things change, the more different the things you are going to hear. And if you refuse to listen? You’ll push the relationship back to where it used to be because you will have stifled the opportunity for the new and better to blossom.

Accept ‘bids for repair’: There will be arguments over how you are changing as a couple, how fast, what direction… you name it. When the arguments are over, pay attention to how you repair from those disagreements. Apologies, touches, hugs, laughter, gifts… there are many ways to repair and get back onto good footing. They work best if they are not just offered… but also accepted.

Learn self-talk: There will be some times when your partner will say something and the only thing that will come to your mind will be negative. When this happens it is helpful to use some self-talk to remind yourself that you are both in flux and learning together as you change. Sometimes it’s best to simply be remind yourself patient, and see how things shake out…

Look for the positive, and applaud it: I cannot tell you how many ADHD partners have said these exact words to me… "I’ve been working really hard to do things better and yet even though I’ve done 8 out of the last 10 things right, my partner focuses only on what I’ve done wrong! It’s really depressing.” I understand (having been there myself) how non-ADHD partners fear that if they applaud positive progress it will result in the ADHD partner feeling everything is okay and ‘backsliding.’ Don’t fall into that trap. Your partner’s hard work deserves to be noticed. Focusing on the positive is a great motivator for your partner to keep trying.

Keep a gratitude journal: Change means lots of things are up in the air. When this is the case it’s too easy to focus on the negative (i.e. what still needs to change) instead of the positive. Avoid this trap by keeping a gratitude journal. Write in it as many days of the week as you are interested in doing so. Write about anything for

which you are grateful (not just about your relationship)… you will find it will help your entire mindset. And make it easier to manage the ups and downs of a changing environment.

Create an oasis of calm: In the 'messiness' of change it is really helpful to have an oasis of calm in your life that helps you stay balanced and happy. This oasis can be mental—by learning to meditate and/or getting mindfulness training or reflecting within the best of your faith. I find writing is one type of oasis, as is playing music. Some people also create a physical oasis of calm in their home to which they can retreat.
