Passage 1

Someday a siranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the website you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you

never intended to be seen --- the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs ( ) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is : Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no.”

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths ( ) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon ( ) .

But privacy does matter--- at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.

1. What does the author mean by saying “ the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked” (Lines 4, Para. 2)?

A. People’s personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.

B. In the 21st century people try every means to look into others’ secrets.

C. People tend to be more frank with each other in the information age.

D. Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

2. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?

A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

C. There should be a distance even between friends.

D. There should be fewer disputes between friends.

3. Why does the author say “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret” (Line 5, Para. 3)?

A. Modern society has finally evolved into an open society.

B. People leave traces around when using modern technology.

C. There are always people who are curious about others’ affairs.

D. Many search engines profit by revealing people’s identities.

4. What do most Americans do with regard to privacy protection?

A. They change behaviors that might disclose their identity.

B. They use various loyalty cards for business transactions.

C. They rely most and more on electronic devices.

D. They talk a lot but hardly do anything about it.

5. According to the passage, privacy is like health in that ________.

A. people will make every effort to keep it

B. its importance is rarely understood

C. it is something that can easily be lost

D. people don’t cherish it until they lose it.

Passage 2

Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off--- and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room , the lighting and the humidity. A sensor will detect the presence of a human (and, with lich, ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave, it will turn them off again.

The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will detect faulty electrical appliances, plugs or switches, isolate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect fire and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the faire brigade. It will also call the police should the sensors detect an intruder. This will not be very difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You’ll open them using your personal card--- the one you use for shopping--- maybe using a number known only to you.

It will be impossible to lose the key, and a house breaker will have to tamper( ) with the lock or with a window. It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer.

The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman-servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your home. It does now, of course, but by 2040 “entertainment” will mean much more. For on e thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather than just waiting.

6. The author intends to tell us that in 2040 _________.

A. we will live without the lights and heaters

D. The sensor is multi-functional.

8. According to the author, in 2040 new technology will _______.

A fashionably tan man sat casually at the bat stand, lashing a handful of practice bats. The manager, a crabby old bag of bones, passed by and laughed, “You?re about average, Jack. Can?t you lash faster than that?” Jack had had enough, so he clambered to his feet and lashed bats faster than any man had ever lashed bats. As a matter of fact, he lashed bats so fast that he seemed to dance. The manager was aghast. “Jack, you?re a master bat lasher!” he gasped. Satisfied at last, Jack sat back and never lashed another bat.

John was not sorry when the boss called off the walks in the garden. Obviously, to him, it was awfully hot, and the walks were far too long. He had not thought that walking would have caught on the way it did, and he fought the policy from the onset. At first, he thought he could talk it over at the law office and have it quashed, but a small obstacle halted that thought. The top lawyers always bought coffee at the shop across the lawn and they didn?t want to stop on John?s account. John?s problem was not office politics, but office policy. He resolved the problem by bombing the garden.
