2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Before I introduce 2008 Olympic Games, I want to tell you China has its own sport legends. Back to Song Dynasty, about the 11th century, people started to play a game called Cuju, which is regarded as the origin of ancient football. Within our cultural programs, education and communication will receive the highest priority. We seek to create an intellectual and sporting legacy by broadening the understanding of the Olympic Ideals throughout the country. Then let me explain about our Olympic mascots.

The Official Mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The Five Fuwa will serve as the Official Mascots of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace -- and blessings from China -- to children all over the world. Designed to express the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, the Five Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China’s most popular animals--the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow--and the Olympic Flame.

Each of Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name--a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan is the Olympic Flame, Yingying is the Tibetan Antelope and Nini is the Swallow. When you put their names together--Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni--they say "Welcome to Beijing," offering a warm invitation that reflects the mission of the Five Fuwa as young ambassadors for the Olympic Games.

The Five Fuwa also embody both the landscape and the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast country of China. In their origins and their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature--the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky--all stylistic rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornamentation.

Beibei

In China’s traditional culture and art, the fish and water designs are symbols of prosperity and harvest. And so Beibei carries the blessing of prosperity. A fish is also a symbol of surplus in Chinese culture, another measure of a good year and a good life. The ornamental lines of the water-wave designs are taken from well-known Chinese paintings of the past. Among the Five Fuwa, Beibei is known to be gentle and pure. Strong in water sports, she reflects the blue Olympic ring.

Jingjing

Jingjing makes children smile--and that's why he brings the blessing of happiness wherever he goes. You can see his joy in the charming naivety of his dancing pose and the lovely wave of his black and white fur. As a national treasure and a protected species, pandas are adored by people everywhere. The lotus designs in Jingjing's headdress, which are inspired by the porcelain paintings of the Song Dynasty (A.D.960-1234), symbolize the lush forest and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. Jingjing was chosen to represent our desire to protect

nature's gifts--and to preserve the beauty of nature for all generations. Jingjing is charmingly naive and optimistic. He is an athlete noted for strength who represents the black Olympic ring. Huanhuan

In the intimate circle of Fuwa, Huanhuan is the big brother. He is a child of fire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport--and passion is the blessing he bestows. Huanhuan stands in the center of Fuwa as the core embodiment of the Olympic spirit. And while he inspires all with the passion to run faster, jump higher and be stronger, he is also open and inviting. Wherever the light of Huanhuan shines, the inviting warmth of Beijing 2008--and the wishful blessings of the Chinese people--can be felt. The fiery designs of his head ornament are drawn from the famed Dunhuang murals--with just a touch of China’s traditional lucky designs. Huanhuan is outgoing and enthusiastic. He excels at all the ball games and represents the red Olympic ring.

Yingying

Like all antelopes, Yingying is fast and agile and can swiftly cover great stretches of land as he races across the earth. A symbol of the vastness of China’s landscape, the antelope carries the blessing of health, the strength of body that comes from harmony with nature. Yingying's flying pose captures the essence of a species unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the first animals put under protection in China. The selection of the Tibetan Antelope reflects Beijing commitment to a Green Olympics. His head ornament incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Sinkiang cultures and the ethnic design traditions of Western China. Strong in track and field events, Yingying is a quick-witted and agile boy who represents the yellow Olympic ring.

Nini

Every spring and summer, the children of Beijing have flown beautiful kites on the currents of wind that blow through the capital. Among the kite designs, the golden-winged swallow is traditionally one of the most popular. Nini's figure is drawn from this grand tradition of flying designs. Her golden wings symbolize the infinite sky and spread good-luck as a blessing wherever she flies. Swallow is also pronounced "yan" in Chinese, and Yanjing is what Beijing was called as an ancient capital city. Among the Fuwa, Nini is as innocent and joyful as a swallow. She is strong in gymnastics and represents the green Olympic ring.

Ok, in my final speech, I will continue to explain our Olympic emblem and slogans for you.

Indian Gold Medalist Says He 'Just Went For It'

By Jim Stevenson

Beijing

12 August 2008

India has captured its first-ever Olympic gold medal in an individual event, thanks to the steady aim of Abhinav Bindra in the 10-meter air rifle event, Monday. VOA's Jim Stevenson has more on the accomplishment.

Newspapers across India are telling residents of the world's second most-populous nation about Abhinav Bindra and his winning performance at the Beijing Olympics.

No single athlete from India had ever captured an Olympic

gold medal. The country's last team gold was won 28 years

ago, in men's field hockey. Bindra says his title could have

easily gone to another shooter.

"I just went for it. It went my way and that is just about it," he

said. "I mean, on another day somebody else would have won

it. On another day, somebody else could have easily won it.

But today was my day."

Bindra won the air rifle world championship 2006. A back Gold medal winner Abhinav injury forced him to withdraw from the Asian Games in Doha, Bindra of India on the podium later that year. following men's 10m air rifle shooting finals, 11 Aug 2008 Bindra's win is the only Olympic highlight for India since it

dominated men's field hockey from 1928 through 1956, winning six consecutive Olympic titles. Two more team titles came in 1964 and 1980. But the program has degraded to the point where

India's field hockey team failed to qualify for Beijing.

US Continues to Dominate Olympic Swimming Competition

By Jim Stevenson

Beijing

12 August 2008

Gold medals went to 19 winners Tuesday at the Olympics in China. VOA's Jim Stevenson is in Beijing, where American swimmers used different forms of inspiration to quickly add three gold medals to the U.S. total.

Michael Phelps won his third race in as many days, and again set

another world record. His time of 1:42.96 Tuesday at the Water Cube,

gave him the 200-meter freestyle title that he was denied four years

ago in Athens. As he tries for eight total gold medals, Phelps says he is

motivated by tougher swims compared to the last Olympics.

"It is taking faster times to get into the semifinals and finals than it

was four years ago," said Phelps. "As long as I am swimming the way

I am, hopefully I can keep everything rolling. I am very satisfied with

how I have been going so far. I am almost halfway."

said. "We know how good this team is. And just like he has pushed us, I think we all push each other. From what Michael is doing, it certainly is elevating

everybody else's performance here."

Natalie Coughlin earned the gold medal in the women's

100-meter backstroke event. Her mark of 58.96 not only

edged world record holder Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, but

made Coughlin the first woman to repeat as Olympic

champion in the event. Her inspiration came from a dramatic

race on Monday.

"Today, the U.S. team gained a lot of momentum," Coughlin

said. "And I think a part of that came from the men's 4x100

Beijing, 12 Aug 2008 Australian wins 100-meter breastroke

Australian Leisel Jones had her Olympic dreams crushed four years ago in Athens, failing to live up to her billing as an unbeatable swimmer. She found redemption by winning the 100-meter breaststroke final.

"Anyone to go through disappointments and to criticism is something very difficult," said Leisel Jones. "But to come out the end as an Olympic gold medalist is something that makes it way more important than just coming to my first Olympics winning a gold medal straight away, and then what? I mean, you have got to improve after that."

US wins 50-meter pistol final

Among the other 15 medal events of the day, American Glenn Eller won the men's double trap shooting event. Jin Jong Oh fired a golden round in the men's 50-meter pistol final. Host China turned in a commanding performance in men's team artistic gymnastics, placing first in five of the six apparatuses (to score 286.125 points). Japan was a distant second followed by the U.S. men. China dominates women's synchronized diving

China's dominance in diving continued with gold in women's synchronized 10-meter platform diving. China has won all three diving finals held so far. Zhong Man claimed China's first fencing gold in 24 years, by winning the men's individual saber competition.

Russians dominated Greco Roman wrestling. Nazyr Mankiev was the winner in the 55 kilo weight class while the 60 kilo gold went to Islam-Beka Albiev.

South Korean Pak Hyon Suk topped the podium in 63 kilo women's weightlifting while the men's 69 kilo title went to Liao Hui of China.

Japan wins judo gold

Judo gold went to Ayumi Tanamoto of Japan in the women's 63 kilo category. Ole Bischof of Germany took top honors in the men's 81 kilo division.

Slovak Michal Martikan paddled his way to victory in single canoe. The single men's kayak gold went to German Alexander Grimm.

Germans take lead in equestrian team event

Germany placed first in equestrian team jumping while the individual title went to British rider William Fox-Pitt.

Other Olympic highlights included Howard Bach and Bob Malaythong, who became the first American team to advance to an Olympic quarterfinals in badminton.

US women's softball teams trounces Venezuela

The U.S. women's softball team opened the defense of its gold medal with an 11-0 win over Venezuela in five innings. The 11 runs was an Olympic record for an individual team.

The day's results keep China at the top of the medals table with 13 gold, three silver and four bronze. Ranked by gold medals, the United States is second with seven, followed by South Korea with five.

Olympic Sponsors Represent Force for Change in China

By Parke Brewer

Beijing

12 August 2008

Corporate sponsors are critical to the success of the Olympic Games. Through direct fees paid to the International Olympic Committee and buying advertising time from

broadcasters, who also pay the IOC rights fees, sponsors fund a significant part of the competition. But does this mean sponsors are tacitly endorsing China's policies? VOA Sports Editor Parke Brewer has more from Beijing.

Corporate sponsorship of the Olympics is now a long and

accepted part of the games. By supporting the games,

corporations hope to cash in on both the publicity and

goodwill generated by the world's most watched athletic

competition.

Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Samsung and Adidas are among the

dozen international corporations that paid nearly $100 million each to be primary sponsors for the Beijing Games. These Chinese paramilitary police man

post in restricted area near main companies will also pay a large portion of the estimated $6

billion that will be spent on advertising world-wide during the Olympics stadium, also known as Olympics. Bird's Nest

Their goal is no secret. They hope to make money by selling more products in China, and around the world.

Some human rights groups say by doing business with China, these companies give the

government a silent endorsement for its repeated human rights violations. But Olympic sponsors contend that by engaging China, they are a force for change.

What do spectators think?

VOA spoke to spectators, like Blair Whitmarsh from Canada,

who agree.

"I think it is a good question. The Olympic Games attempts to

be non-political, and so I think I sort of see it through a

non-political lens," he said. "It is a way that we fund the games

and allow us to have the biggest athletic competition and

therefore the greatest party on earth. And I tend to think of it as a non-political thing. I know that we tend to politicize it, but I

I know that we tend to

politicize it, but I do not think it is giving tacit approval for what is going on here in China."

Does corporate sponsorship foster change?

To coincide with the start of the Olympics, U.S. fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's opened its largest restaurant in the world right in heart of Beijing's main Olympic venue complex. McDonald's has been doing business in China since the 1990s, and by the end of this year plans to have one-thousand restaurants in the country.

Former U.S. track and field star Carl Lewis - a nine-time Olympic gold medalist - was hired by McDonald's to promote its grand opening in Beijing. He defends companies like McDonald's working in China, saying they are a positive influence.

"China has had to make concessions and I am sure they will continue to do that in the future in order to blend into the world," Lewis said. "Obviously, we cannot go backwards on globalization. We are here as it is. And for companies like McDonald's, who you see everywhere in China, every single day out there doing things and hiring people and

getting Chinese to understand what different cultures are about. I think it is a good thing."

USOC chief says Olympics offer incentive to meet international standards

U.S. Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth was also in attendance at

2008 olympic games

the opening of the world's largest McDonald's. He organized the first privately financed Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984 and told VOA the Olympics and its sponsors offer countries like China incentives to conform to international standards.

"I think when you open up a country, the country behaves differently," he said. "And the Olympics opens up a country like no other event in history.

And Ueberroth believes that is happening in China.

"For the issues that people want to pick on them, almost all of those negative issues are getting better every day, and the Olympics does that," he noted.

Peter Ueberroth added that helping fund the Olympics in China through corporate sponsors is more likely to bring about change than any boycott would have.
