The Internet: a Blessing or a Curse?

It’s beyond doubt that our life has been made more convenient and efficient by the most practical technological boon——the Internet. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Internet is to our life what blood is to our body. At the same time, adverse opinions about The Internet also exist. From my perspective, The Internet is playing an increasingly indispensable part in our life due to its fast dissemination of information and its platform for people-to-people and people-to-government communication. Meanwhile, the excessive Internet use proves detrimental both physically and mentally.

The most striking benefit of the Internet involves the easy and quick access to the latest information worldwide. In the past, only when we watch the TV, flip through newspapers and read magazines can we acquire the information. Nevertheless, currently, all source of information, both at home and abroad, can be obtained simply at our fingertips, which is time-saving and money-sparing. Moreover, jobs can be found, academic performance can be improved ,and friends can be made through the abundant and beneficial information provided by the Internet. It’s no wonder that the Internet is becoming increasingly popular worldwide.

Secondly, the Internet levels the platform for people of the same and different works of life to interact freely. On the one hand, people can have access to friends afar without the confinement of regions. Gone are the

days when people had to rely on letters to keep in touch with each other. On the other hand, communication between the general public and the government can be easier since online petition, which makes the common people more frank, is more efficient and less time-consuming. Nowadays, it’s a common practice for ordinary people to voice their opinions and give vent their feelings on Microblog and QQ. Therefore, the Internet has been enjoying the ardent support of the general public.

However, while highly applauded by its faithful users, it also draws harsh criticism due to its negative impacts on people’s physical and mental health, especially teenagers. Admittedly, over-indulgence in the Internet can produce unfavorable effects. For instance, an increasing number of school kids are so obsessed with online chatting, TV series and computer games that they get short-sighted. What’s worse, their mental illness such as autism and violence orientation bubble to the surface, as a consequence of lack of face-to-face communication and exposure to sex and violence. Consequently, the negative impacts of the Internet can never be ignored.

Taken as a whole, the upsides of the Internet far outweigh its downsides. There is good reason for us to take the essence and discard the dregs, that is to say, to give full play to the irreplaceable merits of the Internet and counteract its demerits. Only in this ways will the Internet
