Topic: Should University Students Go in for Business?

Title: Practice, Experience, Excellence

It is beneficial for university students to go in for business. University is a place for young adults to prepare themselves before fully entering into the society. Universities are not high schools, and university students shall not only focus on their academic improvements. Going in for business is a good way to practice their overall skills, to stimulate their innovations, and its benefit certainly out weights its disadvantages.

First of all, the most important mission for universities to accomplish is to teach their students the way to think, to solve problems, and to become completely independent. If a university forbids its students to practice their ideas and try to realize their ambitions, the only thing its students can do after their graduation is to solve exam questions. Our country is at a very important period of development. Cheap labor, which is contributing a great deal to our rapidly growing economy, will not sustain in the future. If our country wants to become a real strong nation, innovation and the spirit of exploration will be of extreme importance. Although not admitted, it is widely agreed among us that higher education in the West is far more advanced than that of ours. Indeed, western universities usually have hundreds of years of history and have gained invaluable experience in teaching and management skills in the process. However, this can never be our excuse for being not as good as our competitors on the other side of the ocean. Top universities like Harvard and Yale, and famous institutions like the MIT, they all inspire their students to explore their own ideas, to research, to create, to open new businesses, and to even start a completely new industry. Bill Gates started Microsoft while in university; Steve Jobs started Apple while in university; Mark Zuckerburg started Facebook while in university. In fact, even our great Communism Party was emerged partly among students who were, during which time, studying abroad that later became our great leaders in the revolutions. Young people change the world because they are bold and energetic, but in order to change the world, young people must have the capability to lead and organize, to solveproblems with necessary knowledge and experiences, and, universities are the exact place for young people to build these skills.

However, while it is essential for university students to practice while in college, we do admit that academic achievements in university is still of extreme importance. Those admirable people I mentioned above changed the world not only because they had the spirit of exploration and started their businesses early, but also because they were in possession of vast and advanced knowledge. Knowledge has always been the foundation of innovation and exploration, and knowledge can only become useful when it is used to innovate and explore. Both knowledge and practice are essential for university students, and they are equally important. (480 words)

2005年

A chance to view the outer part, but not the core

As a senior student in university, I have gone through many interviews---interview to recruit new club members, interview for internship and so on. In my opinion, the procedure of recruitment is like choosing apples---viewing resumes is liking picking up apples, you can only decide the appearances, or in other words, whether there are obvious flaws. Interview is like the first bite, by which you know the real taste of an apple. But only by eating all the apple can you see the core. That is to say, only by working with a person for some time, can you judge a person. So to me, interview can help us to get a basic knowledge about a person and is indispensable in recruitment but it has its limitations.

Interview is most helpful in the aspect that it provides interviewer a chance to observe something that resumes can not tell, for example, How the interviewee behaves? Is he/she nervous under pressure? Does he/she has excellent communication skills like eye contact? These things might be very important. Because some job might ask more than one's academic knowledge it might also require the ability of dealing with people and so on. Another important function of interview is that it can help interviewer to decide whether the interviewee lied in his/her resume. As we all know, under hot completion, in order to get more chances, some people tend to lie in their resumes about their experiences and so on. But in an interview, interviewer could ask questions related with interviewee's experiences. If the experiences are made-up, it's easy to detect. The last advantage of interview I want to list here is that it can be carried out in different forms for different purposes for example, pressure interview--- to see how a person react under harsh conditions, group interview--- to see how a person act in a team and so on. Thus, by arranging an interview in a particular form, a company can find out the person most suitable for the job.

But interviews have their limitations. You can not find out all about a person in only a few hours like that some apple might appear good and taste sweet but bad in the core.

In summary I want to point out that interview is an efficient way for companies to choose their employs but only by observing the long term performance, can you judge an employee.

2006年 Ambition is the decision one makes and the resolution with which he carries out that decision. It provides us with the required driving force to accomplish any undertakings in our life. Just as Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer put it, “And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.” Indeed, once we make up our minds to choose to do something, then our life becomes meaningful and specifically orientated. This notion of life, as far as I observe, is closest to truth and does apply to almost all aspects of life.

First of all, ambition renders us a sense of mission. No matter what decision you make you have to be responsible for your choice. Your choice procures you a sense of

orientation, or more specially a sense of mission. And only a strong mission may enable one to accomplish greatness. Caesar of the ancient Roman Empire was urged by his ambition “I came, I saw, I conquered.” And became an unrivaled empire builder in the history of Rome. John Milton, stimulated always by his ambition that aimed at writing some “mighty lines” which England would unwillingly forget, had in due time secured his position as the second Shakespeare in the history of English literature.

In the second place, ambition can bring one’s potentials to the full. Ambition may well serve as a catalyst activating one’s dormant potentials. Without ambition one’s potentials will remain slumbering like a dormant volcano. A case in point is Ms Zhang Haidi, a Chinese Helen Keller. It was her ambition to be a useful person has turned the almost paralyzed Zhang Haidi into a well-accomplished figure whose achievements would dwarf those of some normal people aim at the sun, though, at worst, they may probably land on the moon.

Influential as it is upon us, however, ambition must be channeled in the right direction. If wrongly directed, one’s ambition may bring havoc on him and others. Hitler, whose ambition was to conquer Europe by whatever evil means, finally turned him into a demon. It was this demon that almost cast Europe into an unfathomable abyss of anguish and suffering. Another case is Macbeth whose ambition was to become the king of Scotland. However, his ambition was materialized by the murder of King Duncan. Consequently, unbearable guilt and psychological agony drove him to his tragic doom.

To sum up, ambition can benefit us tremendously if wisely and correctly channeled, otherwise it may ruin others and ourselves. A poet says: life can be bad; life can be good; life can be dirty; life can be sad,; life can even be painful. In my mind’s eye, a person can make his life beautiful, meaningful and rewarding and stand out as a respectable personage if he is motivated by a well-orientated ambition.

2007年 Financial Disparity and Friendship

People have long been dominated by a fixed notion that friendship rests more largely on economic status shared by friends than anything else. They believe that financial disparity will definitely affect friendship. Indeed, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Unfortunately, this notion of friendship cannot always apply. The possible truth is that, in a harmonious universe, birds of different feathers can and should be flying together. Therefore, one is sure to have friends from different economic backgrounds, and true friendship transcends financial differences. It embraces the quality of being genuine, lasting and productive.

To begin with, true friendship should be genuine. Genuine friendship does not assume the commonly held view that financial equality can nurture a harmonious relationship between friends. Karl Marx and Engels, two great German thinkers, have provided an undisputable example in this regard. They came from totally different families, the former being financially disadvantaged while the latter being a son of wealthy capitalist. However, unlike table friends who might value various material comforts, they developed genuine friendship that helped refuel the two great minds. Together, they contributed to the treasure of human thoughts that has exerted the greatest impact on the course of history. Their example is educational in that their life-long friendship shows unmistakably that money counts least in true friendship.

Additionally, true friendship should be lasting. People say nothing lasts in the world. But as far as I am concerned, true friendship does last forever. With lasting friendship, friends can go far both in life and career. A notable Chinese ancient novel Three Kingdoms renders a typical case in point. LiuBei, GuanYu and ZhangFei, the three protagonists of the book, who were sworn brothers, notwithstanding they were from totally different socio-economic backgrounds. Liu was penniless despite the fact that he believed he had descended from aristocracy; Guan, a tramp from modern standard of judgment; Zhang, a wealthy landlord. Their friendship was formed long before they were successful. They clung to their friendship no matter what befell them. With permanent friendship the three lived a meaningful life. With abiding friendship they built a prosperous kingdom called Shu. Ever since then, their friendship has become a legend.

Last but not least, true friendship should be productive. Of course, no one could deny the fact that in seeking friendship, one has some personal concerns like enjoying the company of friends, wining and dining, etc. But the best way to perpetuate good friendship is certainly to make it productive. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, my uncle met some intellectuals, who suffered from political persecution and lived in sheer poverty. Rather than look down upon or shun them, my uncle treated them as equal and made them his life-long friends. Together they started their own business when China implemented the opening-up policy some 10 years ago. Through fair and foul, and above all their joined efforts, they finally turned their concern into one of China 500. And today their relationship is more solid than ever before.

As Bacon wrote, “We die as often as we lose a friend.” Few could live a rich, abundant and eager life without friends. Making friends and maintaining lasting friendship are an indispensable

part of a successful and happy existence. If we consider what makes a good friend, money is the least concern. While we live, let us make friends.

Mobile Devices Are Not Just for Short Message Service

An American professor, Naomi Baron, conducted a survey of 2000 college

students’ attitude towards phone calls and text-messaging on mobile devices. And it is concluded by Professor Baron that what students like most is that they can reach other people. However, as far as I know, mobile devices are not just for short message service.

College students are more open-minded and outgoing than students before. They enjoy using their mobile devices to put their happiness, sadness or worries online and talk about it with friends. They can receive congratulations, comforts, or advices. This makes life healthy and enjoyable and it also shows that college students don’t mind people reaching them, instead, they like the feeling of being concerned about. In

addition, students also like citing links of websites of study in their blogs. In this way, students can share information in a larger circle more than a school.

Another advantage of mobile devices is that they can help us shoot the

meaningful, important, or interesting moments, and the freeze frames of those

moments are not just memories but also a treasure for life. Sometimes, when students encounter some crime scenes, their phones can take pictures and even record the sound, which can be very helpful evidences. What’s more, students who like writing can use their phone to “write down” the momentary inspiration anytime, anywhere. Those sudden thoughts and ideals may disappear soon and can be very evanescent if people just let it come and go.

Besides, with the development of smart phone, many kinds of apps can be downloaded and installed in the phone. Students can use their favorite study apps to study wherever and whenever they want to. They can also use some apps to enjoy light music if they feel tired. They don’t have to carry piles of heavy paper books which is harmful to the environment or carry the cumbersome computers. To a certain extent, one mobile device is just like a mobile pocket library. And it’s really

convenient to search information and read news on the phone and it makes students feel they have the whole world in their hand.

To sum up, mobile devices actually shorten the distance between people and people, and between one individual and the world. They are the magic windows open to the outside world for everyone and encourage us to see learn more and learn more and they do make our life easier and happier.
