Advantages of Being Time-conscious Time flies like an arrow, and time lost never returns. To most people, punctuality is a way of showing respect to other people's time. Being Time-conscious is a universal tendency.

Here are the four advantages of being Time-conscious. The crucial of all, Being on time for an event shows that you respect the person who set up the event as well as all the other people attending the event. Moreover, it shows you can be counted on. If you are always punctual, people can naturally assume that they can count on you. In addition, it tells others that in addition to knowing the importance of the event, you also know the importance of your part of the team. Last but not the least, a consistent basis adds value to the event.

Once the sands have run out of a person's hourglass, they cannot be replaced. Therefore, My proposal is that we should make the best of time, and make every minute count.

My View on Marriage across Nations With the progression/advancement of globalization, cultural exchanges between different countries are deepening rapidly. With that, marriage across nations is increasing. Obviously, some couples of mixed marriage enjoy their relationship and live happily, whereas some mixed marriages tend to bring about problems and even end up in divorce. Therefore, people have different attitudes toward mixed marriages?

Some people are in favor of mixed marriages in that they think love is love, regardless of color or nationality of the couple. And a couple of mixed marriage can learn more about tolerance, compromise and being open with each other as long as they have true love for each other and mutual trust.

However, a good number of people are quite concerned about intercultural marriage. They suspect that such a marriage tends to bring about problems mainly due to cultural differences. Since mixed couples hold different views on values, beliefs and living habits as well, many people may worry that such a marriage has higher divorce rates than marriage of the same race or culture.

In my eyes, I am supportive of intercultural marriage because marriage is based on the true love between the couple. On condition that the couple honestly learn about mutual cultures and are open with each other as well as respect their parents on both sides, they are able to overcome various problems from cultural conflicts and their marriage will work out right

eventually.

No Smoking

It is known to everyone that smoking is harmful to our health. Research that conducted in many countries has indicated that smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease and various respiratory呼吸的 illnesses.

Responding to overwhelming medical evidence of the harmful effects of smoking, many governments have taken actions to reduce tobacco consumption消费.Some have imposed征税 on tobacco products, others have conducted anti-smoking campaigns. Nonsmoking is often demanded by authorities.

However, none of the governments have even considered prohibiting阻止 the sale of tobacco. This is due partly to the political power of the big tobacco companies and partly to the fact that so many people, particularly in influential有权势的 position in society, are habitual习以为常的 smokers. Tobacco farmers and workers are also strongly opposed to legislation立法. In fact, smoking is not only a matter of habit but also a matter of profits.

unit 2Smart Cars

1 Even the automobile industry, which has remained largely unchanged for the last seventy years, is about to feel the effects of the computer revolution. 2 The automobile industry ranks as among the most lucrative and powerful industries of the twentieth century. There are presently 500 million cars on earth, or one car for every ten people. Sales of the automobile industry stand at about a trillion dollars, making it the world's biggest manufacturing industry.

3 The car, and the roads it travels on, will be revolutionized in the twenty-first century. The key to tomorrow's "smart cars" will be sensors. "We'll see vehicles and roads that see and hear and feel and smell and talk and act," predicts Bill Spreitzer, technical director of General Motors Corporation's ITS program, which is designing the smart car and road of the future.

unit3Get the Job You Wan

28 My mentor, Curt Carlson, is the wealthiest man in Minnesota, owner of a hotel and travel company with sales in the neighborhood of $9 billion. I had to get to a meeting in New York one day, and Curt generously offered me a ride in his jet. It happened to be a day Minnesota was hit with one of the worst snowstorms in years. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport was closed for the first time in decades.

29 Then, though the storm continued to pound us, the airport opened a runway for small craft only. As we were taxiing down it to take off, Curt turned to me and said gleefully, "Look, Harvey, no tracks in the snow!"

30 Curt Carlson, 70 years old at the time, rich beyond anyone's dreams, could still sparkle with excitement about being first.

31 From my standpoint, that's what it's all about. Prepare to win. Never stop learning. Believe in yourself, even when no one else does. Find a way to make a difference. Then go out and make your own tracks in the snow.

Is America going to decline like other great nations have before? The author thinks

not, arguing that the type of society being created in America is quite unlike any that has gone before it. Read what he has to say and see whether you agree.

unit4 America as a Collage

1 The mere fact that America still attracts millions of people is evidence that it is not in decline. People aren't attracted to a place of decline. Signs of decline are sure to be found in a place as complex as America: debt, crime, the homeless, drugs, dropouts. But the main characteristic of America, the first and most enduring impression, is dynamism, energy, aggressiveness, forward movement. 2 It is so hard to think of this nation in decline when you know that there are vast regions of the planet which are absolutely paralyzed, incapable of any improvement at all.

3 It is difficult for me to agree with Paul Kennedy's thesis in The Rise and Fall of Great Powers that America must inevitably follow historical precedent. That's the way history used to be -- all powerful nations declined and gave way to other empires. But maybe there is another way to look at what is happening. I have a sense that what is going on here concerns much more than the fate of a nation.

4 It may be that the Euro-centered American nation is declining as it gives way to a new Pacific civilization that will include, but not be limited to, America. Historically speaking, America may not decline, but instead fuse with the Pacific culture to create a kind of vast Pacific collage, a mix of Hispanic and Asian cultures linked through the most modern communication technologies.

unit6 Old Father Time Becomes a Terror

24 As Godbey points out, the stress we feel arises not from a shortage of time, but from the surfeit of things we try to cram into it. "It's the kid in the candy store," he says. "There's just so many good things to do. The array of choices is stunning. Our free time is increasing, but not as fast as our sense of the necessary."

25 A more successful remedy may lie in understanding the problem rather than evading it. 26 Before the industrial revolution, people lived in small communities with limited communications. Within the confines of their village, they could reasonably expect to know everything that was to be known, see everything that was to be seen, and do everything that was to be done.

27 Today, being curious by nature, we are still trying to do the same. But the global village is a world of limitles

s possibilities, and we can never achieve our aim.

28 It is not more time we need: it is fewer desires. We need to switch off the cell-phone and leave the children to play by themselves. We need to buy less, read less and travel less. We need to set boundaries for ourselves, or be doomed to mounting despair.

Unit 2Automobiles changed the world during the 20th century, particularly in the United States and other industrialized nations. They are indeed of great use to us, but they have brought some hazards as well, such as noise and air pollutions, and highway fatalities. It is reported that automobile accidents rank among the leading causes of death and injury throughout the world. Fortunately, modern innovators are reinventing the automobile. New propulsion systems, fuels, designs and means of manufacturing cars have all developed rapidly in the past decade. For example, by using the satellite-aided global positioning system(GPS), a computer in the automobile can locate the vehicle’s precise position, and with the application of sensors, smart cars can eliminate most car accidents.

Unit 3Well begun is half done, as the saying goes. It is extremely important for a job applicant to do his homework. From my standpoint, whether or not one has done his homework clearly makes a difference in his chance of success.I have a friend who is earning somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 thousand dollars a year in a large computer software company. He told me that from his own experience the decision makers who interview prospective employees like people who are well prepared. Those who make no endeavor to learn as much about his prospective employer as possible don’t have much of a chance of success.

Unit 4Professor Huntington’s paper greatly inspired me. According to him, in a plural/pluralistic society, there will inevitably be different opinions. The key is to deal with them in such a way that they can play a constructive rather than destructive role.He argues that in a plural /pluralistic society we must stress/attach importance to interpersonal relationships. Cooperation, and looking at issues from the perspective

of other people. If some groups regard themselves as superior and treat other ethnic groups or religions with disrespect, the whole society may be paralyzed.I am convinced that if we put into practice the ideas mentioned above, then there is the possibility of creating a new civilization.

Unit 6There is no question that today we are under constant pressure to work longer hours, to produce more, to possess more, and to become a success. Workaholism, a modern addiction, has thus arisen. The cause of workaholism is the perception that by working longer hours and completing more projects, we will enhance our self worth. Many women today feel the same stress to produce and get ahead and, at the same time to nurture their offspring and shoulder a variety of domestic responsibilities.Research shows that workaholism tends to distance us from our immediate families. It forces us to labor longer and longer hours, leaving a minute fraction of time to be physically and emotionally available to our loved ones. Intimacy among family members is doomed to die in the process.
