Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary.

Well I had a unique seat that day. I was sitting in 1D. I was the only one who can talk to the flight attendants. So I looked at them right away, and they said, "No problem. We probably hit some birds." The pilot had already turned the plane around, and we weren't that far. You could see Manhattan.

Two minutes later, 3 things happened at the same time. The pilot lines up the plane with the Hudson River. That's usually not the route. He turns off the engines. Now imagine being in a plane with no sound. And then he says 3 words-the most unemotional 3 words I've ever heard. He says, "Brace for impact."

I didn't have to talk to the flight attendant anymore. I could see in her eyes, it was terror. Life was over.

Now I want to share with you 3 things I learned about myself that day.

I leant that it all changes in an instant. We have this bucket list, we have these things we want to do in life, and I thought about all the people I wanted to reach out to that I didn't, all the fences I wanted to mend, all the experiences I wanted to have and I never did. As I

thought about that later on, I came up with a saying, which is, "collect bad wines". Because if the wine is ready and the person is there, I'm opening it. I no longer want to postpone anything in life. And that urgency, that purpose, has really changed my life.

The second thing I learnt that day - and this is as we clear the George Washington bridge, which was by not a lot - I thought about, wow, I really feel one real regret, I've lived a good life. In my own humanity and mistaked, I've tired to get better at everything I tried. But in my humanity, I also allow my ego to get in. And I regretted the time I wasted on things that did not matter with people that matter. And I thought about my relationship with my wife, my friends, with people. And after, as I reflected on that, I decided to eliminate negative energy from my life. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better. I've not had a fight with my wife in 2 years. It feels great. I no longer try to be right; I choose to be happy.

The third thing I learned - and this's as you mental clock starts going, "15, 14, 13." You can see the water coming. I'm saying, "Please blow up." I don't want this thing to break in 20 pieces like you've seen in those documentaries. And as we're coming down, I had a sense of, wow, dying is not scary. It's almost like we've been preparing for it our whole lives .But it was very sad. I didn't want to go. I love my life. And

that sadness really framed in one thought, which is, I only wish for one thing. I only wish I could see my kids grow up.

About a month later, I was at a performance by my daugter -

first-grade, not much artistic talent... yet. And I 'm balling, I'm crying, like a little kid. And it made all the sense in the world to me. I realized at that point by connecting those two dots, that the only thing that matters in my life is being a great dad. Above all, above all, the only goal I have in life is to be a good dad.

I was given the gift of a miracle, of not dying that day. I was given another gift, which was to be able to see into the future and come back and live differently.

I challenge you guys that are flying today, imagine the same thing

happens on your plane - and please don't - but imagine, and how would you change? What would you get done that you're waiting to get done because you think you'll be here forever? How would you change your relationtships and the negative energy in them? And more than anything, are you being the best parent you can?

Thank you.

Listening is an active skill. Whereas hearing is passive, listening is something that we have to work at. It's a

relationship with sound. And yet it's a skill that none of us are taught. For example, have you ever considered that there are listening positions, places you can listen from? Here are two of them. Reductive listening is listening "for." It reduces

e

verything down to what's relevant and it discards everything that's not relevant. Men typically listen reductively. So he's saying, "I've got this problem." He's saying, "Here's your solution. Thanks very much. Next." That's the way we talk, right guys? Expansive listening, on the other hand, is listening "with," not listening "for." It's got no destination in mind. It's just enjoying the journey. Women typically listen expansively. If you look at these two, eye contact, facing each other,

possibly both talking at the same time. Men, if you get nothing else out of this talk, practice expansive listening, and you can transform your relationships.

The first really big health issue is a word that Murray Schafer coined: "schizophonia." It's a dislocation between what you see and what you hear. So, we're inviting into our lives the voices of people who are not present with us. I think there's something deeply unhealthy about living all the time in schizophonia. The second problem that comes with

headphone abuse is compression. We squash music to fit it into our pocket and there is a cost attached to this. Listen to this -- this is an uncompressed piece of music. And now the

same piece of music with 98% of the data removed. I do hope that some of you at least can hear the difference between those two. There is a cost of compression. It makes you tired and irritable to have to make up all of that data. You're having to imagine it. It's not good for you in the long run. The third problem with headphones is this: deafness.

Let's move away from bad sound and look at some friends that I urge you to seek out. WWB: Wind, water, birds -- stochastic natural sounds composed of lots of individual random events, all of it very healthy, all of it sound that we evolved to over the years. Seek those sounds out; they're good for you and so is this. Silence is beautiful. The Elizabethans described language as decorated silence. I urge you to move away from silence with intention and to design soundscapes just like works of art. Have a foreground, a background, all in beautiful proportion. It's fun to get into designing with sound. If you can't do it yourself, get a professional to do it for you. Sound design is the future, and I think it's the way we're going to change the way the world sounds.

And four modalities where you need to take some action and get involved. First of all, listen consciously. I hope that after this talk you'll be doing that. It's a whole new dimension to your life and it's wonderful to have that dimension. Secondly, get in touch with making some sound. Create sound. The voice

is the instrument we all play, and yet how many of us are

trained in using our voice? Get trained. Learn to sing. Learn to play an instrument. Musicians have bigger brains. It's true. You can do this in groups as well. It's a fantastic antidote to schizophonia. To make music and sound in a group of people, whichever style you enjoy particularly. And let's take a

stewarding role for the sound around us. Protect your ears? Yes, absolutely. Design soundscapes to be beautiful around you at home and at work. And let's start to speak up when people are assailing us with the noise that I played you early on.

Good afternoon,Ladies and gentlemen.

I am not sure whether you have heard that TsingHua University has set a question in an independent recruitment test like this——If there is a conflict between Confucius and Lao Tzu,who will you give support to ? You know this question did come into the picture and even cause a sensation. Nevertheless, Today, you may be shocked again that my speech’s topic is When Confucius meets Socrates. Yeah, Confucius kicked again.

You may say, although Confucius has traveled through all the kingdoms, but

Greece?Heh...You may ask, it is an era that we can only travel on foot, an era we can only communicate with others by mouth, how can they meet? Granted, one is in English, one is in ancient Chinese prose, how can they talk with each other?

However, look! they’ve meet.

“Hi, Socrates, I am Confucius, it’s glad to meet you! ”Confucius said.”I am great ideologist and educator in ancient China. I am also the founder of the

Confucianism. ”

And,Mr.Socrates, who is famous as a rhetorician will not admit

defeat:”Hi,Mr.Confucius,I am Socrates, a famous philosopher, ideologist and

educator. I and my student Plato, and his student Aristotle are The ancient Greek three sages.”

They were going for a walk, while taking with each other. And then, a young man appeared. The young man squatted pulling a long face. The two asked him what happened. And the young man said:”I have a dream that I wanna doing

something about education. But I met some problems that where to give a lesson? How to select students? ”

A series of turned on the gas. Confucius told him:”It is wonderful to doing

something about education. In my opinion, everyone should enjoy the schooling. Listen to me, you could set up a personal school, recruit many many students in a wide range. You must make a dyed-in-the-wool change! You must break the monopoly that only nobility and slave owner can enjoy the education! Set Your Heart at Rest! I will do you a favor.”

Well,Socrates said:”Set up a school? What a troublesome thing? Are you kidding me? As far as i am concerned, square, temple, street

corner, workshop, stadium, everywhere is my classroom; the young, the old,the rich, the poor, the framer, the slave and the slave owner, everyone is my student. ”

Thoughtfully, the young man asked again:” Purpose! what’s the purpose of

education?”Confucius answered the question with a smile:”There is no doubt that

the answer will be cultivating governor who is full of lofty character. Studying is closely linked to the official career. First of all, studying is the approach to being a governor; Secondly, being a governor is the main purpose of studying; moreover, academic record is the basic condition. There’s no doubt that it’s a truth.”

Mr.Socrates agreed and said:”Yes,I totally agreed with you. A man who is going to run the country well and give the people peace and security must have received a well education. Thought and Self-awareness are very estimable.”

After hearing these, a warm smile emerged on the young man’s face and he said:”How about the main content?”

Before the sound of one's voice had died away, Socrates said:”Logic and

dialectics! Nous is the most significant guidepost to give a right direction. Although fortune is a happiness, it’s not the happiest. Trust me. ”

At that time, Confucius gave a totally different

answer:”Virtue,Language,Government affairs and Literature. Only in this way can we cultivate individual moral character, run the family unison, manage the nation in order and peace will prevail throughout the universe.”

Yeah, you may guess. The young man get worried again.

Finally, an old man who has witnessed all the process came to and stand in front of them, said, Huh... You two, Mr CON and Mr SOC, it is a great thing that you have something in common in this era.Maybe it is the natural law in education. However, the differences are inevitable.Cause there is a too much distance

between your geographical location, cultural deposits, social nature and so on. So we will respect all of your thought. You have no idea that your thought are always charming through many thousands years!”

Look, what a amazing and fantastic story about their meeting.

Education is a theme that will never die during the human’s development. Today, we are trying our best and devote all ourselves to find the truth about schooling and parenting. When it come boring and worthless, why not to go over the predecessors’ idea?Maybe we will get more.I guess.

Just like, you can ask Confucius to date with Socrates when they are not busy. This concludes my presentation.

Thank you.
