I'd be a classical musician.I can play several instruments (flute,clarinet,oboe,saxophone,piano...and violin, viola and French horn badly). When I was in high school, music took up a lot of my time; I was involved both in school and in the community, and I'd spend hours every day practicing. But as a senior in high school, thinking about how I wanted to spend the rest of my life,I had to make a decision...and I came to the conclusion that while I was good,or even very good,I wasn't outstanding enough to make enough money at it to live on.So I turned classical music into a (very) part-time hobby and focused on a "real" career.I still practice my instruments - not as often as I probably should,but...I still even play in public occasionally. When I worked in a nursing home,I'd spend some of my breaks by parking myself in front of their big,old Steinway and plunking out the songs I could play by memory.I've played in a couple of weddings, and I used to work with a part-time violinist (when I was working in a customer service call center,of all places),and when it was nice out,we'd take our instruments down by the river or to a park and play for ourselves and for nature and for passers-by.(Someone actually threw a dollar in her open violin case once, which surprised us so much that we stopped playing to stare at him.) There's something about picking up an instrument and playing some fiddly little Bach or Vivaldi piece that's so relaxing and centering.I'm at my most serene when I'm playing music; everything else just fades away.I still think I'm a pretty darned good musician, and I still agree with my 18-year-old self that I'm not fantastic enough to get the high-paying job I'd need to do it full time, but I know it would make me happy.I would love nothing more than the excuse to play all day long. And to earn money for doing it?That would just be so cool.
