现代虎类的化石首次现在于陕西蓝田公王岭.估计时间为中更新世初期,亦即距今大约60万年.1998年,IVPP的邱占祥院士认为在我国已经发现的化石中,时代最早的虎化石可能是距今约200万年前（含化石的岩性是红土）的古中华虎（Panthera tigris palaeosinensis）,Panthera tigris palaeosinensis是瑞典古生物学家Zdansky于1924年所建的,这个标本出土于河南渑池兰沟第三十八地点,最近在甘肃又出土了新的标本,目前这个种的标本非常稀少,全世界仅有3个头骨,一个在国外,其余2个保存于北京.（Mazak,2006）.1967年,著名猫科动物学家,德国古登博格大学的Hemmer教授著论文详细讨论了这个种的性质,Hemmer教授非常详细地研究后认为绝大部分特征与虎接近,但部分特征也是美洲豹特有的.他也认为古中华虎应为虎的一个亚种(Panthera tigris palaeosinensis).有人说华南虎头骨是8个公认虎亚种中最原始的,这个说法缺乏根据,目前还没有人拿过古中华虎的头骨与华南虎头骨详细比较过
