The colorful military parade held on China’s 60th anniversary last Thursday was a show of strength by a nation that has rarely been more confident,Western analysts say.
China used the celebration to show-case its military power:fighter jets,thanks and ballistic missiles.The display included 100,000 marchers,80,000 children,8,000 military personnel and 151 planes.It was the first military parade in a decade.
President Hu Jintao told the watching nation that the Chinese people were “full of confidence” about the future,USA Today reported.
“Today,a socialist China geared to modernization,the world and the future has stood rock-firm in the east of the world,” he said.
The celebration marked the day in 1949 when Chairman Mao Zedong announced the founding of the People’s Republic of China.In the decades since,the nation has grown into the world’s third largest economy.
The parade has attracted the attention of international media.
The Associated Press quoted Geremie Barme,a China scholar at Australian National University as saying that the displays were “meant to educate,excite,unite and entertain”.
The New York Times said while China’s military is still behind those of many developed nations,its progress since the last such parade in 1999 was obvious.
Agence France Presse(AFP),a news agency based in France,said that China showed long-range nuclear missiles capable of striking the US and other Chinese-made weapons.
AFP also said that 30 years of economic reforms had made China rich and pushed it into the ranks of the world’s powers.China has become once again a proud global force.
