(Barnes & Noble)

(Borders Books)

(Circuit City)

Best Buy(卖场设计略胜电路城一筹)

Tips for a Killer Presentation

Tips for a Killer Presentation

To be a good presenter you need to be engaging with the audience and know your topic. Keep the presentation concise and include only relevant information. Use an electronic enhancement, such as PowerPoint, as an accompaniment to your presentation to reinforce your point, not as a crutch. Remember -- your slide show is not the presentation -- you are the presentation.

1. Know Your Material

Knowing your material thoroughly, will help you decide what information is essential to your presentation and what can be left out. It will help your presentation to flow naturally, allowing you to adjust to unexpected questions or events, and it will help you feel more comfortable when speaking in front of an audience.

2. Information: Less Is More

PowerPoint slides are not cue cards. Remember that the audience should listen to you, not read the screen. If you find yourself writing entire sentences as bullet points, stop. Resist the temptation to write excessively long points. Write just enough to remind yourself of what you should say. .

3. Minimize You:

Your slides should be directed to the audience. Frankly, your audience doesn't care as much about your company history, as they do about whether you can help them solve the specific problems they face. Write a script for your presentation that makes the audience the protagonist, or the main character, who faces a problem that you will help them to solve.

4. Limit Punctuation and Avoid All Capital Letters

Punctuation can needlessly clutter the slide and the use of all caps makes statements more difficult to read and is like SHOUTING at your audience.

5. Avoid Fancy Fonts

Choose a font that is simple and easy to read such as Arial, Times New Roman or Verdana. Avoid script type fonts as they are hard to read on screen. Use, at most, two different fonts – perhaps one for headings and another for content. Keep all fonts large enough (at least 24 pt and preferably 30 pt) so that people at the back of the room

will be able to easily read what is on the screen.

6. Use Contrasting Colors For Text and Background

Dark text on a light background is best, but avoid white backgrounds -- tone it down by using beige or another light color that will be easy on the eyes. Dark backgrounds are effective to show off company colors or if you just want to dazzle the crowd. In that case, be sure to make text a light color for easy reading. Patterned or textured backgrounds can reduce readability of text. Keep your color scheme consistent throughout your presentation.

7. Limit the Number of Slides

Keeping the number of slides to a minimum ensures that the presentation will not become too long and drawn out. It also avoids the problem of continually changing slides during the presentation that can be a distraction to your audience. On average, one slide per minute is about right.

8. Use Photos, Charts and Graphs

Combining photos, charts and graphs and even embedding digitized videos with text, will add variety and keep your audience interested in the presentation. Avoid having text only slides.

9. Avoid Excessive Use of Slide Transitions and Animations

While transitions and animations can heighten your audience’s interest in the presentation, too much of a good thing can distract them from what you are saying. Remember, the slide show is meant to be a visual aid, not the focus of the presentation.

Keep animations consistent in the presentation by using animation schemes and apply the same transition throughout the presentation.

1. Rehearse Your Presentation:

Rehearse your presentation out loud, accompanied by the slide show. If possible, get someone to listen while you rehearse. Have the person sit at the back of the room so you can practice speaking loudly and clearly. Ask your listener for honest feedback about your presentation skills. Make changes where necessary and run through the whole show again.

2. Introduction & Thanks

Remember to introduce yourself if your audience doesn't know you personally, and to thank them for their time at the end. These are simple formalities, but are considered polite.

3. Handouts

Let the audience know at the beginning of your PowerPoint presentation that you will give out copies of the slides at the end of the presentation. This ensures that the audience is following along with your presentation and not busy taking notes or distracted by the handouts.

4. Pick Powerful Props:

You don't need a box full of props like the watermelon-smashing comic, Gallagher. A few simple props to demonstrate a point can be memorable in the minds of your target audience.

5. Look at the audience

If you ever wondered where you should be looking when presenting, the answer is right in front of you. Don’t just single out one person, but instead try to make eye contact with numerous people throughout the room. If you don’t do this then you aren’t engaging the audience, you are just talking to yourself. This can result in an utter lack of attention from your audience.

6. Do Not Speak to Your Slides:

Many presenters watch their presentation rather than their audience. You made the slides, so you already know what is on them. Turn to your audience and make eye contact with them. It will make it easier for them to hear what you are saying, and they will find your presentation much more interesting.

7. Talk to your audience, not at them

People hate it when they get talked at, so don’t do it. You need to interact with your audience and create a conversation. An easy way to do this is to ask them questions as well as letting them ask you questions.

8. Pace Yourself:

As part of your practice, learn to pace your presentation. Generally, you should spend about one minute per slide. If there are time constraints, make sure that the presentation will finish on time. During your delivery, be ready to adjust your pace in case you need to clarify information for your audience or answer questions.

9. Show some movement

You probably know that you need to show some movement when speaking, but naturally you may forget to do so. Make sure you show some gestures or pace around a bit (not too much) on the stage when speaking. Remember, no one likes watching a stiff. People are more engaged with an animated speaker.

10. Watch what you say

You usually don’t notice when you say “uhm”, “ah”, or any other useless word frequently, but the audience does. It gets quite irritating; so much that some members of the audience will probably count how many times you say these useless words.

11. Have a Backup Plan:

What if your projector dies? Or the computer crashes? Or the CD drive doesn’t work? Or your CD gets stepped on? For the first two, you may have no choice but to go with an AV-free presentation, so have a printed copy of your notes with you. For the last two, carry a backup of your presentation on a USB flash drive or email yourself a copy, or better yet, do both.

Several Asian hospitals are doing experiments with tele-medicine. Tele-medicine

is a technology that allows doctors to "see" patients without them being in the same

place. This is made possible through high-speed communication networks (网络).At

both ends of the line, the way of video-meeting lets them see and talk to each other.

Blood pressure (血压) and body temperature are directly shown on computers.

Tele-medicine is already in wide use in some places such as the United States

and Germany. Among other uses, village doctors hold "consultations (会诊)" with

far-away experts(专家). The experts can also help them during operations.

Tele-medicine has been slow to reach Asia because of high costs, besides other reasons. When things improve, this technology will develop very fast. Chinese

University of Hong Kong's medical school has joined a big hospital in Beijing, and

Thailand is building a tele-medicine station connecting 20 areas.

Tele-medicine will do good to patients because doctors from different places

can see them and give their medical advice. The help is quite important if the disease

is an unusual one. It also helps spread medical knowledge among experts.

As tele-medicine develops well, its costs will be lower and it will become very

popular in the medical field.

American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the

beginning of the term, students must select their

courses and teachers first. While in China students

usually have no chances to select their courses and

teachers.

Selecting is very important for your grades in America. So at the first term,

don’t select too many courses, 74.or you’ll feel very nervous and it may influence

your study. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information

about subjects, time arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must

choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the

teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing

him. Because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and

give too low grades.

There is another thing after you select the course and the teacher. How to buy

textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive.

Each copy is about $30~50. In order to save money, many students buy some used

textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library. You

must get enough ready before class. In class, discussing is very important. 75. They don’t usually ask you to sit well.

Instead they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like. They don’t give you

much homework to do. You can learn some knowledge and do exercises by yourself. So

in American schools, you must do almost all things yourself.

4.Answer the questions (根据短文内容,回答下列问题)

Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer

experience was for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a

school teacher, she also found time to volunteer. One year, she organized a Super Saturday

fun day for kids in the community. She also used to volunteer at the mint festival every year,

One summer she served food, another year she organized an art programme.

After she retired, she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he was

not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed

reading.

She decided it would be fun to read to elderly people in her community. She also helped one

woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information

about her life when she visited her. She put the information in a book and got it published.

Ann was very excited to share her life story with her children and grandchildren.

After a hurricane( 飓风) destroyed some southern cities, Helen volunteered again for the

American Red Cross. She prepared food and answered phones in a care centre. She says,” I

have always liked the Red Cross because the organization helps people in need no matter

what.”

One day Helen read an article in the newspaper about refugees( 难民) who needed to learn

English. Now, she meets once a week with Sahra, a 38-year-old woman from Somalia. Sahra

is reading and writing skills. Helen gave Sahra a camera and asked her to take pictures of her

daily life. She developed the pictures, and then asked Sahra questions about them. In the end,

they wrote a book together and used the photos in the book. This helped Sahra learn many

new words about her everyday life.

Helen says, “The most rewarding( 有益的) part of volunteer work is becoming friends with the

people I help, They enrich my life as well as I enrich theirs.”

29. When was Helen’s first volunteer experience for the American Red Cross?

30. What did Helen do after she retired?

We need to be responsible for our environment. Being a frugal consumer(节俭的消费者) is one

way to help. But, what exactly does that mean?

Use It Up

You can use things up instead of wasting them. Squeeze that last bit of toothpaste out of the

tube. Use the last little piece of soap. Don't throw away any bits of the biscuit at the bottom

of the box.

Wear It Out

You do not always need to have new things. Suppose your sneakers have broken laces, but

they still fit you. Repair them and wear them longer. You don't have the latest iPhone until the

old one doesn't work anymore. Then you can get a new one. Think twice before replacing

something that still works.

Make It Do

When something you want is not on hand, look for something else that you already have to

take its place. Suppose you are packing your lunch for tomorrow and want a butter sandwich.

You are out of butter. Have a cheese sandwich instead so that you can use all of the cheese.

Learn to fix broken toys instead of just throwing them away. With a little thought, you can

make something do, instead of buying something new.

Do Without

Think about all those things that you would like to have. Do you really need them? How long

even more resources and space.
