Unit 5 All You Need Is Love
Conversation 1
Kate: Hi, Becky, how's it going?
Becky: Good!
Mark: Guys, look, can you help me with a problem?
Janet: Yes, of course.
Mark: The thing is, there's this girl I really like called Jenny Sparks. She's a Fresher, really stunning, reads history. I know her name because someone pointed her out to me, but I've never actually spoken to her. Do either of you know her?
Kate: No.
Janet: No, I don't know her. Mark, how can you like her if you haven't met her? Kate: It's because she's absolutely gorgeous, Janet.
Mark: That's right! I want to ask her out, but first I've got to meet her. Got any suggestions?
Becky: Guys! You want to order?
Mark: Sorry.
Kate: Three cappuccinos?
Becky: Sure.
Janet: Do you know anyone who knows her? You could ask them to introduce you. Mark: No, I don't, that's the problem.
Kate: Are you matchmaking, Janet?
Janet: What's matchmaking?
Kate: Making introductions between people who might like each other. We don't do that here. How about just walking up to her and saying Hi? Why don't you do that?
Mark: No.
Kate: Why not?
Mark: I'm not usually shy, but — she's so ... you know ...!
Janet: Oh, Mark!
Kate: Just believe in yourself, Mark. You're a great guy!
Janet: I understand Mark completely.
Kate: Well, it's the only way he's going to get to talk to her.
Mark: OK, I'll give it a try.
Becky: Solved the Jenny problem yet?
Girls: Thank you.
Janet: You'll be fine. Mark. She'll like him, won't she, Becky?
Becky: Of course she will!
Conversation 2
Mark: Hey, guess what, guys, I've got a date with Jenny.
Kate: You did it, you asked her out?
Janet: When are you seeing her?
Mark: Saturday. We're going to The Eagle and Child.
Janet: Sounds great.
Mark: Yeah! The thing is, I'm a bit nervous.
Janet: Are you?
Mark: Yes, I'm afraid I'll make a fool of myself. I could do with some more advice. Kate: Any ideas?
Janet: Um ... I'm thinking.
Kate: Well ... One thing is ... if you're nervous, it's easy to talk too much, so remember not to do that.
Mark: Good point. I'll remember that.
Janet: You should make her feel special. Show her you're really interested in her. Mark: I am really interested in her.
Janet: Well, you should show her you are.
Mark: That'll be easy! What else?
Kate: It's a good idea to look good.
Mark: That's pretty obvious!
Kate: I mean clean clothes, Mark!
Mark: Oh ... thanks, Kate! Any more advice?
Kate: Yes, the most important thing is, just be yourself.
Becky: How's it going, Mark?
Kate: He's worried this girl won't like him.
Becky: She'll love you! Ready to order?

Roald Dahl was one of the most successful writers of children?s books. He sold millions of books all

a Roald Dahl Museum you can visit.
Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Wales, Britain. His father was rich but he died when Roald was very
young. Roald and his mother lived a hard life. He had to leave school and went to Africa where he worked
for an oil company.
In 1939 Roald became a pilot, but he had a bad accident. It made him limp(瘸的) for the rest of his life.
After this, Roald went to America where he wrote a story about his experience as a pilot. It was so good
that it was put in a magazine.
Roald married an American film star. They bought a house in England and had five children. From
1960 to 1965, : Theo, one of his children, was hit by a taxi and was seriously hurt. Olivia, one of
Roald?s daughters, died of a strange illness. Soon after this, his wife also had a serious illness. It took her
years to get completely better.
Gradually Roald became more and more successful. He always did his writing in an old shed(棚) at
the back of his house. He always sat in the same old armchair with a wooden board on his lap.
In 1983 Roald won a big prize for his book The BFG. During his life, Roald wrote many famous
books, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox.

C “Am I my brother?s keeper?” The question comes from the Bible(圣经). In the Bible, Cain kills his
brother Abel. When God asks Cain where Abel is, he replies, “I don?t know. Am I my brother?s keeper?”
by which he means, “Am I responsible (有责任心的) for my brother—his safety and health?” The answer,
of course, is “Yes, you are.”
This sense of responsibility for others is basic to all good societies. And also it is basic to what we call
“civil(文明的) society”. China is now working on building a civil society and the high schools in Shanghai
want students to take part in through volunteering. They are supposed to do sixty class hours of
volunteer work before graduation. This is something new in China, but it is not new in other countries.
In the Canadian province of Ontario, high school students are required to do forty hours of
volunteering. In some American states, the volunteering requirement is one hundred hours. These students
spend about an hour a week during the school year and summer vacations, helping the poor, the sick and
the old. They also teach young children to read and help to clean up the environment. And studies have
shown that this volunteering experience influences students a lot after graduation.
Some of you may be thinking, “Gee, sixty class hours is a lot. How can I find the time?” In fact, if you
finish it in three years, you only need to do the work about three class hours a month. And the time is well
spent if it helps you realize that “being your brother?s keeper” makes you a better person and makes society
a better place for everyone.
38. A Shanghai high school student should finish class hours of volunteer work before graduation.
A. thirty B. forty C. sixty D. one hundred

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you
want is a little light-hearted entertainment.
Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal
Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as
Bombay. Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards,
Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.
The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy,
a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave
hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie.
Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries. The actors change clothes and locations
within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a
gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday
troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.
Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two
lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents.
Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films. They will take
you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love
song.
A.Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage.
B.There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war.
C.Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film.
D.Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with light-hearted incidental music.
E. Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.
F.The result is a fun-filled musical.
G.So if you're tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

It is six o’clock in the morning. You are asleep in my left arm and I am learning the art of one-handed typing. Your mother, more tired yet more happy than I’ve ever known her, is sound asleep in the room next door.
When you’re older we’ll tell you that you were born in HongKong in the lunar year of the pig. ―It's a boy, so lucky,‖ our neighbours told us. They said you were the first baby to be born in the block this year. This, they told us, was good Feng Shui, in other words, a positive sign. Naturally your mother and I were only too happy to believe that.
Your coming has turned me upside down and inside out. I am pained by the memory of each suffering child I have come across on my journeys as a journalist. To tell you the truth, it’s nearly too much for me to even think of the children being hurt and abused and killed.
Last October, in Afghanistan, when you were growing inside your mother, I met Sharja, aged twelve, motherless, fatherless, guiding me through the grey ruins of her home. Everything was gone, she told me.
There is another memory of Rwanda, and the churchyard where I found a mother and her three young children huddled(蜷缩) together where they’d been beaten to death. The children had died holding on to their mother.
Daniel, these memories explain some of the protectiveness I feel for you, and the

Going to university can cause many unfamiliar feelings. It’s a stressful period. While it offers greater freedom, many find it difficult to let go of family ties and old school friends.
Adding the pressures of academic performance and the loneliness of being in an alien environment, life can become confusing. For many students, good grades become the first concern and other ones, like that of mental health, become less important.
Earlier this year, researchers from the US’ Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine released a study earlier showing that between one-fifth and one-quarter of university students within the US suffer from some form of depression. Though a majority of people will feel depressed at some point in their life, this doesn’t mean symptoms can be ignored. How can we define ―depression‖? Although
everyone gets sad at times, depression is an illness that is different from just feeling down.
When a ―bad day‖ turns into a ―bad week‖ and goes on into a ―bad month‖, it’s probably time to get some help. Depression can form a cycle – it takes away the energy and confidence you need to get out of it, which may severely disturb their normal life. The good news, however, is that depression is treatable and most universities now offer a variety of services to help their students.
There is a lot of professional help available today and a number of medical treatments have been shown to be a highly effective. For less severe cases, often just speaking to a tutor or a friend can make a huge difference. Sometimes all you need is a helping hand and that’s where friends can be of great help. Many researchers have also shown that gentle exercise, healthy foods and an optimistic outlook can do wonders for your mood. So stay positive and know that you’re not alone.
25. Which is not mentioned by the writer in making students feel depressed ?
A. Being far away from home B. Feeling homesick
C. The pressures from studies D. Local food
26. Which of the following statements is right according to this passage?
A. Being depressed can be ignored because it is rare in universities.
B. Something has been done to help those suffering from being depressed.
C. Once one feels down in campus, they must seek professional advice.
D. So far, no medicine can be effective in treating depression.
27. Depression is an illness because _____.
A. it will occur again and again over a certain period of time
B. those suffering from it can not live a normal life
C. it will make one sleepy in class
D. it is hard to recover from it

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age. The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked tothe fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.
―We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,‖ said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.
―Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,‖ said Goldspink. ―this is part of the ageing process.‖
What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells.
A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.
―This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,‖ said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the
ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. ―The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,‖ said Goldspink.
The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.
28. The text mainly talks about ________.
A. men’s heart cells B. women’s ageing process
C. the gender difference D. hearts and long life
29.According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ________.
A. women have more cells than men when they are born
B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat
C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age
D. women never lose their pumping power with age
30. If you want to live longer, you should ________.
A. enable your heart to beat much faster
B. find out the reason for ageing
C. exercise regularlyto keep your heart healthy
D. prevent your cells from being lost
31. We can know from the passage that ________.
A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out
B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells
C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss
D. women over 70 could lose more heart cells than those at the age of 20

When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. Basille. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coin changer (硬币兑换器)fixed to his belt. He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would pen a note-―Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery‖-and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to out house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn’t freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk, thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete. Besides,
