一、改变英语词形以理清句子结构

汉语中并列结构很多，多层次的并列关系也很多，常给英译汉带来一定困难。为了妥善处理汉英译汉的多层次并列关系，需考虑到汉英两种语言在以下几方面的差异。汉语中常用的并列连词都有“和”、“同”、“与”、“及”等；在英语中，通常用and。鉴于以上诸因素，汉语中很容易产生多层次的并列关系。请看以下一句：“要加大对科技、教育事业和国防工业的投入，并注意有关人才的培养。”由于汉语有多种并列连词，而且还可隐含，因此短短一句中轻而易举地出现了四个层次。“并”连接了第一层次的并列关系，“和”连接第二层次的并列关系。如果四个层次的并列关系在英语中统统用and表示，那么英译汉显得十分笨拙，难以让读者看清这四层关系。在英译汉作品中确实存在滥用and的现象。为处理汉语多层次并列关系，可采用改变汉语词形的方法。在以下几例中，我们探讨在英译汉中如何使用不同形式的连接词来表明不同层次的句法层次。

英译汉例1. Sound public security is of prime important for the safety of people’s lives and property and the reform, development and stability.Sound public security is of prime important for the safety of

people’s lives and property as well as the reform, development and stability.搞好社会治安，是关系到人民群众生命财产安全和改革、发展、稳定的大事。

译文一使用三个and，第一、三个and 连接低层次的并列关系，第二个and 连较高层次的并列关系，但读者未必能自如地看清这种复杂的关系。译文二用as well as标出较高层次的并列关系，用and标出较低层次的并列关系，因而十分清楚易读。以下例子用了相同的办法。

英译汉例2. We should focus investment on strengthening

agricultural,forestry and water conservancy projects as well as

energy,transportation,communications,environmental project and other infrastructural facilities.投资要重点用于加强农林水利建设，能源、交通、通信、环保等基础设施建设。

二、英译汉之分译法

即化整为零。当英语定语从句较长时，如果译成前置定语，就不符合汉语的表达习惯。在这种情况下，通常把定语从句译成并列的分句，置于原来它所修饰的词的后面。英译汉例3：

They are for the ideal which is close to the heart of every Chinese and for which, in the past, many Chinese have laid down their lives.

译文：他们正在为实现一个理想而努力，这个理想是每个中国人所珍爱的。在过去，许多中国人曾为了这个理想而牺牲了自己的生命。

英译汉例4：It applies equally to traditional historians who view history as only the external and internal criticism of source and to social science historians who equate their activity with specific techniques.

译文：这种谬误在历史传统派和历史社科派中都存在。前者认为，历史就是史学界内部和外部人士对各史料来源的评论；而后者则认为，历史的研究就是具体方法的研究。

三、英译汉之混和法

即打破原文的定语结构。译者根据自己对原文的正确理解，用自己的话译出原文的意思。

英译汉例5：

Good clocks have pendulums which are automatically compensated for temperature changes.

译文：好的钟摆可以自动补偿温度造成的温差。

此外，在很多情况下，英语中的定语从句具有状语的功能，在逻辑上与主句有状语关系。这时，可视情况将其译作与汉语相应的表示原因、结果、目的、时间、条件、让步等的状语从句。如：

英译汉例6：Electronic computers, which have many advantages,cannot carry out creative work and replace man.

译文：尽管电子计算机有许多优点，但是它们不能进行创造性工作，也不能代替人。
