Advancement of Girls' and Women's Education, delivers a speech in English at the Global Education First Initiative event at the United Nations in New York on Sept 26, 2015. [Photo/UN Sina Weibo]

Director-general Bokova, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to join for this important initiative as the UN marks its 70th anniversary.

Education is very close to my heart. My father grew up in a small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help, many people learned to write their own names. With his help, many people learned to read

newspapers for the first time. With his help, many women were able to teach their children how to read. As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it.

After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I, myself, am a beneficiary of that progress. Otherwise, I would never have

become a soprano and professor of music. I’m following in my father’s footstep by teaching at the China Conservatory of Music to help continue China’s success story.

I want to thank director-general Bokova and UNESCO for naming me Special Envoy for Girls’ and Women’s Education. I’m truly honored to work with the UN and do something for global education. I have visited many schools around the world and seen first-hand how much more we can do on education.

Education is about women and girls. It is important for girls to go to school because they will become their children’s first teachers someday. But women still account for over half of the world’s poor in population and 60% of adults who cannot read. Education is crucial in addressing such inequalities. In China, the Spring Buds Education Program has helped over 3 million girls go back to school. Many of them have finished university education and are doing well at work.

Education is about equality. In poor countries and regions, the number of school drop-outs is astonishing. We call for more educational resources to these places.

Education is about the young people. Young people are the future. Education is important because it not only gives young people acknowledge and skills but also helps them become responsible citizens. As UNESCO’s Special Envoy and mother myself, my commitment to education for all will never change.

Many years ago, my father made small difference in his village. Together, we can make a big difference in the world.

I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children especially girls can have good access to education. This is my Chinese dream. I believe, one day, education first will no longer be a dream, it will be a reality enjoyed by every young woman on this planet.

Thank you very much!

Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan delivered a speech at the Global Education First Initiative event at the United Nations in New York on Sept 26, 2015. Beyond her title as China's first lady, Peng Liyuan is known for the worthy

causes she participates to help others and benefit the society. Peng was given the official certificate of designation that made her the sixth person - and the first Chinese - to be made a UNESCO special envoy in 2014.

Youth education topped the issues Peng Liyuan cared about. In the past 10 years, she submitted proposals about education for youths in rural areas, youth cyber safety and AIDS orphans' mental health.

Young people need good education because it is not only about giving them knowledge and skills but also helping them become responsible citizens, Peng said.

She said many years ago, her father made a small difference in his village by teaching the children to read. She followed his steps and became a professor of music.

Calling for more educational resources in poverty-stricken areas, she said education is about equality.

Peng especially called for educational support in rural areas. She proposed the government should not only waive rural students' tuitions but also consider providing medical subsidies to their families.

She also stressed the importance of education for women and girls. As a mother herself, she understands how important education is for women as they are the first teacher of their children, Peng added.

She said she hopes all the children, especially girls, can have access to good education, and that is her Chinese dream.

Irina Bokova, UNESCO's director-general once said that he hoped "the voice of Peng can help bring positive changes to China as well as the world and to play a leading role in the effort of promoting education worldwide".

Most people think that the capital of the movie world is Hollywood in the United States. However, the real movie capital is Mumbai, in India. Mumbai used to be known as Bombay, and so the film industry there is called ―Bollywood.‖ Bollywood makes twice as many movies each year as Hollywood—more than 800 films a year.

The movies from Bollywood are very different from Hollywood movies. For one thing, Bollywood movies are much longer than most Hollywood movies. Most Bollywood movies are more than three hours long, and contain singing, dancing, action, adventure, mystery and romance(but usually no kissing). Because Bollywood films contain so many different features, this style of film is sometimes called a ―masala‖ film.(―Masala‖ is an Indian word for a mixture of species.)

Another big difference between Bollywood and Hollywood movies is the way movies are made. It takes much longer to make a movie in Hollywood than in Bollywood. In fact, filming may began on a Bollywood movie before the script is finished. The director and writer can make up the story while the film is being made. Sometimes they will even write the script by hand instead of taking time to type it.

Bollywood actors are very popular and some are in such high demand that they may work on several movies at the same time. They may even shoot(拍摄) scenes for several films on the same day using the same costumes and scenery. Since most Bollywood movies follow the same kind of story, shooting scenes for several films at the same time is not a big problem for actors or directors. This also helps keep the cost of Bollywood movies lower than the cost of Hollywood movies. The average Bollywood film, with a budget(预算)of only two million US dollars, seems very cheap compared to the average budget of sixty million US dollars for a Hollywood film, thirty times as much!

6. What is the main topic of the reading?

A. Famous stars in Bollywood. B. How Hollywood movies are made.

D. The history of movie-making in India. C. The difference between two movie industries.

7. What is NOT true about Mumbai?

A. It is the movie capital of India. B. The new name is Bombay.

C. More movies are made there than in Hollywood.

D. It is less expensive to make films there than in Hollywood.

8. Why are Bollywood films often called ―masala‖ films?

A. They are very popular. B. They show Indian culture.

D. They mix different styles of movies. C. They are much longer than Hollywood films.

9. Bollywood films are cheap to make because .

A. they are shorter than Hollywood films

B. the scripts are written by hand

2

C. the movies do not use any special effects

D. one movie can reuse things from other movies

10. Which of the statements would the writer probably agree with?

A. Most Bollywood movies are very similar.

B. It takes a lot of money to make a good movie.

C. Only Indian people can understand Bollywood movies. D. Hollywood movies are too short.

The iPhone, each of Apple’s products sounds cool and has become a fashion. Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter ―i‖ – and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer – which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet—adopted the title in 2008.

A lovely bear – popular in the US and UK – that plays music and video is called ―iTeddy‖. A slimmed down version of London’s Independent newspaper was launched last week under the name ―i‖.

In general, single-letter prefixes have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce first came into use.

Most ―i‖ products are targeted at young people and considering the major readers of Independent ―i‖, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name.

But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter ―i‖. Why not use ―a‖, ―b‖, or ―c‖? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, ―i‖ works because its meaning has When Apple uses ―i‖, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. ―Even when Apple created the iPad, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition.‖ He says.

―However, thanks to Apple, the term is now associated with portability(轻便).‖ Adds Thorne.

Clearly the letter ―i‖ also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and they love personalized products for this reason.

Along with ―Google‖ and ―blog‖, readers of BBC Magazines voted ―i‖ as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade.

But as history shows, people grow tired of fashion. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with ―2000‖ in their names became fashionable as the year was associated with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the trend disappeared.

11. People use iPlayer to _______.

A. listen to music B. make a call C. read newspapers D. watch TV programs online

12. We can infer that the Independent ―i‖ is aimed at _________.

A. fashionable women B. old readers C. young readers D. engineers

13. The underlined word ―

A. popular B.uncertain C. definite D. unique

3 14. The writer suggests that _____.

A. the popularity of ―i‖ products may not last long

B. iTeddy is a live bear

C. the letter ―b‖ replaces letter ―i‖ to name the products

D. ―i‖ products are often of high quality

A. portable B. environmentally friendly C. advanced D. recyclable

Someone desires fame and wealth, or love and sympathy; what you have in your heart is reflected in design. Those who don’t share my philosophy won’t buy my clothes. Peng is a caring person, devoted to charity and environmental protection, which is exactly what I’m doing now.‖

However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s support of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.

―Instead she presented a vision of Chinese fashion, desiring to bring Chinese designers to the world stage,‖ says a western designer.

The first lady’s double-breasted coat and her black leather handbag aren’t available at any of Exception’s shops, though Exception’s physical stores do have seen a rising number of visitors.

direct way to contribute to social work and help the community. It helps to save lives and helps those who are in need of blood due to bad condition or the heavy loss of blood during operations or in accidents.

You are able to give or donate blood every three or four month, and it is a great way to make

a huge difference to someone’s life and you can always be proud of it after making valuable contributions to society. Blood donation is not a big problem, but you need to keep a few points in mind.

Before donating blood, make sure that the ferrum (铁) level in your body is high enough and

for that you should take a healthy diet. Do not go for blood donation on an empty stomach. You should follow the correct process so that everything goes well. After having a balanced diet you will feel strong and comfortable to donate blood. Afterwards, you will not feel faint or weak.

A Simple Talking about the Military Parade on

Hello,everyone!

Very nice(glad)to give this speech to you.I’m sorry because my spoken English is so poor that (可以考虑加maybe)you couldn’t listen clearly. My theme of the speech is A Simple Talking about the Military Parade on September 3.And I will carry out the topic from two aspects.

1. Looking the international relations between China and foreign countries from countries leaders attended this activity.

According to official news,Chinese government invited many important countries in the world to join the memoraial activity, including Western developed countries like America,Britain,Russia etc.But the President of the United States Obama didn’t attend the parade. And the Western important countries’leaders also didn’t come except the President of Russia Putin.According to reports, there were 49 countries attending the 70 anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-fascist War memorial activies, including 30 foreign leaders such as head of country and head of government, 19 high-level government representatives, and 10 heads of the international and regional organizations.

As we can see, when the chairman Xi jinping and lady Peng liyuan met foreign leaders, the secretary generral of the U.N. Ban Ki-moon(潘基文) was the first leader and Putin(普京) was the last one.Meanwhile, the President of Korea Park Geun-hye(朴槿惠) is one of the country leaders attending this memorial activity. She and Putin walked front and sat beside Xi jinping. It showed the respect for big country. It is accepted that the relation between China and Russia is very good.So when Russia held the Red square parade,Putin invited Xi jinping to attend the activity, and Mr Xi did.It is same that Obama didn’t attend too. From this situation,we can see that Western developed countries have a not good attitude in the parade memorial activities in China and Russia, such as America and the European Union. On the other words,it is NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Orgnization)(北约).They are unwilling to see the development of Chinese and Russian Militaries. And we also can draw a conclusion that America and the European Union is a camp,so China and Russia is another one in today’s world international relations. I want to say,as the saying goes, only forever profits and not forever friends in international relations.

2. What can we learn from the chairman Xi jinping’s speech?

In this parade memorial activity,Mr Xi jinping carried out a 12 minutes speech.I think the speech is very wonderful and its conten is very abundant. In his speech, he mentioned 18 times of peace. There are some important information .

First, explain one purpose: remember the history, the memory of martyrs(烈士), cherish(珍爱) peace and create the future. He said, the war fighting throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the military and civilian casualties(伤亡) more than 100 million people, including Chinese casualties more than 35 million, the death of the Soviet union toll at more than 27 million.

Second, Chinese people prop up(支撑) the eastern main World Anti-fascist War.He said,in the war, Chinese people with great national sacrifices to prop up the World Anti-fascist War in the east key battleground, made great contribution for the World Anti-fascistWar. The Chinese people's war of resistance against Japan also received wide international supports, and we will always remember the people all over the world for theircontribution to the victory of the war!

Third,China will cut 300 thousand soldiers. This is a very important decision. For the sake of peace, China will always insist to the path of peaceful development. It is a measure China did to protect world peace.

In the end,he said three sentences. Justice will prevail(胜利)! Peace will prevail!People will prevail!

And to this military parade,it is the first time that China invites foreign military representatives to join the parade.17 foreign military formations(编队) joined this parade.Of course, there are many wonderful contents and lots of first time. Now,let’s have a review!
