篇一：Rats and men

Summary for Rats and Men

Here I wanna begin with Edward de Bono’s words “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.” “Insoluble problems” refers to the problems that can not be solved because of one’s fixated responses. The theme of the passage is to tell readers that human beings should be rife with creativity. The whole passage was divided into three parts. The first section is form paragraph 1 to paragraph 2. This paragraph give us an experiment performed by Professor Maier show that “neurosis” induced in experimental rats is caused be their fixated reaction to their problems. The second part includes 6 paragraphs from paragraph 3 to 8. In this part, the author want to show that governed by a fixated reaction to their problems, human beings, when disturbed, go through pretty much the same stages as the rats. This behavior pattern recurs throughout human life from the small tragedies of the home to the world-shaking tragedies among nations. The last part is from paragraph 9 to 10. This section focused on the difference between a rat’s problems and those of man’s as well as their similarity in their reaction to their problems reveal that man is functioning at less than full human capacity since a rat’s power of abstraction is limited while that of man is known as not.

Experiments and studies performed by Professor Maier have

revealed a striking similarity between rats and man in their fixated reaction to the problems they meet. However, the difference in the nature of their problems and the difference in their power of abstraction make us wonder how these fixations occur in human beings.
