(1)The Good Man and the Bad Man

There are two men. They are very different. One is good and one is bad.

One day the good man goes walking in the woods.

He takes some steamed buns with him. He is hungry, so he takes a bun out of his pocket. It drops on the ground and rolls away. The good man looks everywhere.

He cannot find his bun. But he hears a strange little sound.

The good man takes another bun out of his pocket.

He lets it drop on the ground and roll away. He hears the sound again.

The good man follows the sound. He sees a little squirrel.

"Thank you for the delicious buns," says the little squirrel.

"You are welcome." says the good man.

"Because you have such a good heart, I have a present for you," says the little squirrel. The squirrel shows the good man two boxes. One is big and one is little.

"Which one do you want?" asks the squirrel.

"Give me the little one," says the good man.

He takes the box and goes home happily. The good man shows the box to his wife. They open it, and it is full of diamonds and gold.

The bad man hears about the magic box. He wants a box, too.

So he brings some dirty buns from the garbage and puts them in his pocket.

He goes walking in the woods. He drops a dirty bun on the ground and it rolls away. He hears a little sound. The bad man drops another dirty bun on the ground and it rolls away.

He hears the sound again. The bad man follows the sound. He sees a little squirrel. "These buns are terrible!" says the squirrel.

"Just give me a box," says the bad man.

The squirrel shows the bad man two boxes. One is big and one is little.

"Give me the big one," says the man. He takes the big box and goes home.

The bad man shows the box to his wife. They open it and it is not full of diamonds and gold. Ugly ghosts come out. The bad man and woman run away and are scared to death.

(2)The Ice Cream Touch

Tommy loved ice cream. He ate ice cream every day.

He couldn't bear to live without ice cream.

One day. Tommy met a vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit in the woods.

"I have magic power. I can give you one wish," said the rabbit.

"Really? May I? " Tommy was surprised. "Yes," said the rabbit.

" I wish everything I touch would be ice cream," Tommy said.

"Good. This is a magic pill. After you eat it, your wish will come true," said the rabbit. The next morning, Tommy took the pill. He wondered what would happen next. He touched his red pillow. It became ice cream.

He took a bite, he found it was delicious!

Tommy was very excited. He touched all the things in his room.

Now he had an ice cream bed, an ice cream quilt, and an ice cream desk.

"The magic is real!" he shouted.

He touched his white pants and red shirts. They became ice cream!

Now Tommy was a little upset. He couldn't get dressed. He started to cry.

Guess what? They were ice cream tears.

Then Tommy heard a sound.

It was Mimi, his pure white little cat.

Mimi was Tommy's best friend. Tommy cuddled his cat.

"Oh, no!" His best friend also became ice cream.

At that moment, the vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit showed up.

The rabbit looked at all the ice cream and asked, "What happened? You look so sad," Tommy cried louder.

"Please help me. I don't want any ice cream! I just want my cat back!"

"Well, OK," said the rabbit,

"Now I will give you another wish. Touch things with your right hand and they will return to their original form."

Tommy stopped crying.

He touched Mimi with his right hand. Mimi was pure white again and leaned against him. Tommy was so happy!

Then he touched all his things. Very soon, there was no more ice cream.

Now Tommy still loved ice cream.

He still ate ice cream every day, but he made a wish in his heart:

"I wish I never see that vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit ever again!"

(3)Footprints

Lionel was sitting in the kitchen reading a book.

Louise came in holding a jar of tadpoles.

She slowly climbed the stairs and put the tadpoles in her room.

"There," she said. "Safe and sound."

When she turned around, she saw muddy footprints on the rug.

She followed them down the stairs and through the hall to the kitchen.

"Lionel," she shouted, "why didn’t you tell me my sneakers were dirty?" Lionel looked up. "I wasn’t watching," he said. Louise sighed.

"I’ll have to clean this up fast. Father and Mother will be home soon. They are just across the street."

She filled a pail with soap and water. Then she got the mop and the sponge.

Lionel watched her. He knew how Louise must feel. It was not a good feeling. "I’ll help you," he said.

"Really?" said Louise. "Thanks. I’ll do the kitchen. You start in the hall."

Lionel scrubbed the carpet. The footprints spread into brown smudges. Lionel rubbed harder. The smudges got bigger.

Louise finished in the kitchen. She came out to see how Lionel was doing.

"Arrrgh!" she screamed.

"Well, I’m not done yet," said Lionel.

"I can see that," said Louise.

She took the sponge from Lionel. Then she rubbed really hard.

She squeezed the dirty sponge into the pail again and again.

Lionel got fresh water from the kitchen three times.

When they finished the last footprint, Louise let out a deep sigh. Then she turned around. "Oh no!" she cried. "Look at the wall!"

Lionel looked. His fingerprints were everywhere.

" I’ll get more water," he said quickly.

"No, no," said Louise. "Don’t move."

She ran for some towels and fresh water. Then she scrubbed and cleaned and scrubbed some more.

Lionel held the dirty towels.

Finally she was done. Louise slumped into a chair.

"Where should I put the towels?" Lionel asked.

" I’ll take them," said Louise. "Why don’t you go out and play?"

"Are you sure?" Lionel asked.

Louise nodded. "I’m sure. I’m positive! Thanks for your help, Lionel. But, please…Go!" "Okay," he said.

He was glad he had helped Louise. Maybe he would try it more often.

Passages for Reading

1. Smoking

It is almost known to all that smoking is bad for people's health. Scientific research show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problem. The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year.

Still, many people find it difficult to stop smoking. One reason is that smoking usually

becomes a habitual behavior, and habits, whether good or bad are not easy to be given up. Another reason is the effect of nicotine, the substance found in cigarettes works on people somewhat as drugs do.

Measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. World "No Tobacco Day" is observed every year as the biggest campaign against smoking.

2. My First Job

Before I started at university, I took my first job as a waitress in a nice restaurant. At the night before my first day, I was too excited to go to sleep and as a result, I got up late in the morning. I threw on my clothes and rushed over to the restaurant.

In a great hurry, I didn't hear clearly the head waiter's instruction that we should go into the kitchen through one door and out from the other. So when I took two plates of eggs and bacon and an orange juice out to the restaurant, I went straight towards the wrong door and collided with another waiter coming in!

Worst of all was that I wore a pair of smart shoes but with high heels! A few hours later I was in agony yet had no time to change them. By the time we finished serving dinner at about 10:30 I was completely exhausted. Nevertheless, I learnt something through my experience.

3(来自:WWw.SmhaiDa.com 海达范文网:英语文章朗读). Money

Money is what everybody desires. It can be used to buy food, clothes, books, bicycle, furniture and many other things people need or want.

Money is considered by many people as the most important thing in life. With money, they can go wherever they please and do whatever they want. With money, they can buy a fine house to live in, fashionable clothes to put on, and a nice bicycle to ride. And with money, they can employ attendants to serve them. In a word, money can make people comfortable and bring them happiness.

However, money is also the source of all crimes and brings them misery. Since money is so tempting, quite a few people are attracted by it and begin to go astray. By hook or by crook, they try to make money. To get more money, they gamble, swindle, steal, rob or do many other evil things, for "money makes the mare go". As a result, money leads them to jail or even to the execution grounds.

Of course money is useful and desirable, yet we should make money in proper way and spend

our money on proper things.

4. My View on Opportunity

Different people have different views on opportunity. It is held that there are few opportunities. But it is also held that there are opportunities everywhere.

Those who hold the first opinion think that there are too many people and there is always an intense competition for limited opportunities. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that if one is not prepared, he can hardly have any opportunities: however, if one is prepared, he can have a lot of opportunities.

As to me, I agree with the latter. Admittedly, there is really an intense competition for limited opportunities, but it is not to say the one can't create opportunities himself. In most cases opportunities are created by people themselves. For example, many people lost their jobs in recent years. Some people wait for opportunities in vain. However, others create opportunities themselves and get self-employed. Eventually they become employers themselves.

Therefore, to some extent, one can take his destiny into his own hands.

5. Job-hopping

Different people have different views on job-hopping. Some people would like to always engage in one work because they think that if one sticks to one work, he will be quite familiar and skillful with the work. However, others would like to change jobs constantly because they consider it fashionable to do so and besides they think they can get different work experiences. As to me, I am in favor of the former group of people's attitude. I think that if one always works in one field, he can accumulate a lot of experience in that field which in turn will further improve his work. Therefore he will become an expert in that field. However, if one hops from one job to another, he can never amass experience in one field. Although he can get different work experiences, he can't make use of these experiences in one particular work. Therefore, he will always be a jack-of-all-trades.

In conclusion, if one wants to be an expert in one field, he should not hop from one job to another.

(1)100%. I speak to you for the first time as Prime Minister in a solemn hour for the life of our country, of our empire, of our allies, and, above all, of the cause of freedom. A tremendous battle is raging in France and Flanders. The Germans, by a remarkable combination of air bombing and heavily armored tanks, have broken through the French defenses north of the Maginot Line, and strong columns of their armored vehicles are ravaging the open country, which for the first day or two was without defenders. They have penetrated deeply and spread alarm and confusion in their track. Behind them there are now appearing infantry in Lorries, and behind them, again, the large masses are moving forward. The re-gourmet of the French armies to make head against and also to strike at, this intruding wedge has been proceeding for several days, largely assisted by the magnificent efforts of the Royal Air Force.

(2)85%. We must not allow ourselves to be intimidated by the presence of these armored vehicles in unexpected places behind our lines. If they are behind our Front, the French are also at many points fighting actively behind theirs. Both sides are therefore in an extremely dangerous position. And if the French Army, and our own Army, are well handled, as I believe they will be; if the French retain that genius for recovery and counter-attack for which they have so long been famous; and if the British Army shows the dogged endurance and solid fighting power of which there have been so many examples in the past – then, a sudden transformation of the scene might spring into being.

(3)75%. It would be foolish, however, to disguise the gravity of the hour. It would be still more foolish to lose heart and courage or to suppose that well-trained, well-equipped armies numbering three or four millions of men can be overcome in the space of a few weeks, or even months, by a scoop, or raid of mechanized vehicles, however formidable. We may look with confidence to the stabilization of the front in France, and to the general engagement of the masses, which will enable the qualities of the French and British soldiers to be matched squarely against those of their adversaries. For myself, I have invincible confidence in the French Army and its leaders. Only a very small part of that splendid Army has yet been heavily engaged; and only a very small part of France has yet been invaded.

There is a good evidence to show that practically the whole of the specialized and mechanized forces of the enemy have been already thrown into the battle; and we know that very heavy losses have been inflicted upon them. No officer or man, no brigade or division, which grapples at close quarters with the enemy, wherever encountered, can fail to make a worthy contribution to the general result.

In the air - often at serious odds, often at odds hitherto thought overwhelming - we have been clawing down three or four to one of our enemies; and the relative balance of the British and German air forces is now considerably more favorable to us than at the beginning of the battle. In cutting down the German bombers, we are fighting our own battle as well as that of France.

At the same time, our heavy bombers are striking nightly at the tap root of German mechanized power, and have already inflicted serious damage upon the oil refineries on which the Nazi effort to dominate the world directly depends.

There will be many men and many women in the Island who when the ordeal comes upon them, as come it will, will feel comfort, and even a pride, that they are sharing the perils of our lads at the Front -- soldiers, sailors and airmen, God bless them -- and are drawing away from them a part, at least, of the onslaught they have to bear. Is not this the appointed time for all to make the utmost exertions in their power?

They increase our strength against the powerfully armed enemy. They replace the wastage of the obstinate struggle; and the knowledge that wastage will speedily be replaced enables us to draw more readily upon our reserves and throw them in, now that everything counts so much.

the struggle. In that supreme emergency we shall not hesitate to take every step, even the most drastic, to call forth from our people the last ounce and the last inch of effort of which they are capable. The interests of property, the hours of labor, are nothing compared with the struggle of life and honor, for right and freedom, to which we have vowed ourselves. Grow Great by Dreams

The question was once asked of a highly successful businessman, “How have you done so much in your lifetime?”

He replied, “I have dreamed. I have turned my mind loose to imagine what I wanted to do. Then I have gone to bed and thought about my dreams. In the night I dreamt about my dreams. And when I awoke in the morning, I saw the way to make my dreams real. While other people were saying, 'You can't do that, it is impossible,' I was well on my way to achieving what I wanted.” As Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the U.S., said: “We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers.”

They see things in the soft of a spring day, or in the red fire on a long winter's evening. Some of us let these dreams die, but others and protect them; nourish them through bad days until they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.

So please, don't not let anyone steal your dreams, or try to tell you they are too impossible.

“Sing your songs, and dream your dreams, hope your hope and pray your prayer.”

“唱你的歌,做你的梦,给你的希望以希望,给你的祈祷以祈祷。”

We're Just Beginning

"We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite…”

“我们正在读一本书的第一章第一行,这本书的页数是无限的……”

I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want to make it. We can take the mysterious, future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, just as a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone.

We are all in the position of the farmer. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If our seed is poor and full of weeds, we reap a useless crop. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

I want the future to be better than the past. I don't want it contaminated by the mistakes and errors with which history is filled. We should all be concerned about the future because that is where we will spend the of our lives.

The past is gone and . Nothing we can do will change it. The future is before us and . Everything we do will affect it. Each day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of human endeavor.

looking up at the stars, i know quite well

that, for all they care, i can go to hell,

but on earth indifference is the least 可是尘世间我们丝毫不必畏惧 we have to dread from man or beast.

how should we like it were stars to burn

with a passion for us we could not return?

if equal affection cannot be, 倘若无法产生同样的感情,

let the more loving one be me.

admirer as i think i am

of stars that do not give a damn,

i cannot, now i see them ,say

i missed one terribly all day.

were all stars to disappear or die

i should learn to look at an empty sky 我应该学会仰望空荡的天空, and feel its total dark sublime, 同时感受天空一片漆黑的崇高,

though this might take me a little time.

i remember,i remember,

the house where i was born,

the little window where the sun

came peeping in at morn;

he never came a wink too soon,

nor brought too long a day,

but now ,i often wish the night

had borne my breath away.

在清晨悄悄地往里张望;

3.A private conversation

Last week I went to the theatre. I had a very good seat. The play was very interesting. I did not enjoy it. A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me. They were talking loudly. I got very angry. I could not hear the actors. I turned round. I looked at the man and the woman angrily. They did not pay any attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I turned round again. 'I can't hear a word!' I said angrily. 'It's none of your business,' the young man said rudely. 'This is a private conversation!

4.Breakfast or lunch?

It was Sunday. I never get up early on Sundays. I sometimes stay in bed until lunchtime. Last Sunday I got up very late. I looked out of the window. It was dark outside. 'What a day!' I thought. 'It's raining again.' Just then, the telephone rang. It was my aunt Lucy. 'I've just arrived by train,' she said. 'I'm coming to see you. 'But I'm still having breakfast,' I said. 'What are you doing?' she asked. 'I'm having breakfast,' I repeated. 'Dear me,' she said. 'Do you always get up so late? It's one o'clock!'
