篇一:英语作文My Father
My father was a self-taught mandolin player. He was one of the best string instrument players in our town. He could not read music, but if he heard a tune a few times, he could play it. When he was younger, he was a member of a small country music band. They would play at local dances and on a few occasions would play for the local radio station. He often told us how he had auditioned and earned a position in a band that featured Patsy Cline as their lead singer. He told the family that after he was hired he never went back. Dad was a very religious man. He stated that there was a lot of drinking and cursing the day of his audition and he did not want to be around that type of environment.
Occasionally, Dad would get out his mandolin and play for the family. We three children: Trisha, Monte and I, George Jr., would often sing along. Songs such as the Tennessee Waltz, Harbor Lights and around Christmas time, the well-known rendition of Silver Bells. "Silver Bells, Silver Bells, its Christmas time in the city" would ring throughout the house. One of Dad's favorite hymns was "The Old Rugged Cross". We learned the words to the hymn when we were very young, and would sing it with Dad when he would play and sing. Another song that was often shared in our house was a song that accompanied the Walt Disney series: Davey Crockett. Dad only had to hear the song twice before he learned it well enough to play it. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" was a favorite song for the family. He knew we enjoyed the song and the program and would often get out the
mandolin after the program was over. I could never get over how he could play the songs so well after only hearing them a few times. I loved to sing, but I never learned how to play the mandolin. This is something I regret to this day.
Dad loved to play the mandolin for his family he knew we enjoyed singing, and hearing him play. He was like that. If he could give pleasure to others, he would, especially his family. He was always there, sacrificing his time and efforts to see that his family had enough in their life. I had to mature into a man and have children of my own before I realized how much he had sacrificed.
I joined the United States Air Force in January of 1962. Whenever I would come home on leave, I would ask Dad to play the mandolin. Nobody played the mandolin like my father. He could touch your soul with the tones that came out of that old mandolin. He seemed to shine when he was playing. You could see his pride in his ability to play so well for his family.
When Dad was younger, he worked for his father on the farm. His father was a farmer and
sharecropped a farm for the man who owned the property. In 1950, our family moved from the farm. Dad had gained employment at the local limestone quarry. When the quarry closed in August of 1957, he had to seek other employment. He worked for Owens Yacht Company in Dundalk, Maryland and for Todd Steel in Point of Rocks, Maryland. While working at Todd Steel, he was involved in an accident. His job was to roll angle iron onto a conveyor so that the welders farther up the production line would have it to complete their job. On this particular day Dad got the third index finger of his left hand mashed between two pieces of steel. The doctor who operated on the finger could not save it, and Dad ended up having the tip of the finger amputated. He didn't lose enough of the finger where it would stop him picking up anything, but it did impact his ability to play the mandolin.
After the accident, Dad was reluctant to play the mandolin. He felt that he could not play as well as he had before the accident. When I came home on leave and asked him to play he would make excuses for why he couldn't play. Eventually, we would wear him down and he would say "Okay, but
remember, I can't hold down on the strings the way I used to" or "Since the accident to this finger I can't play as good". For the family it didn't make any difference that Dad couldn't play as well. We were just glad that he would play. When he played the old mandolin it would carry us back to a
cheerful, happier time in our lives. "Davey, Davey Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier", would again be heard in the little town of Bakerton, West Virginia.
In August of 1993 my father was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He chose not to receive chemotherapy treatments so that he could live out the rest of his life in dignity. About a week before his death, we asked Dad if he would play the mandolin for us. He made excuses but said "okay". He knew it would probably be the last time he would play for us. He tuned up the old mandolin and played a few notes. When I looked around, there was not a dry eye in the family. We saw before us a quiet humble man with an inner strength that comes from knowing God, and living with him in one's life. Dad would never play the mandolin for us again. We felt at the time that he wouldn't have enough strength to play, and that makes the memory of that day even stronger. Dad was doing something he had done all his life, giving. As sick as he was, he was still pleasing others. Dad sure could play that Mandolin!

1.
①Failure is unavoidable in our lives. ②It’s a failure not to pass an examination. It’s a failure for us to be refused by others while asking for help. It’s also a failure to miss our goals. ③In a word, failure is not uncommon to everybody.
④When it comes to failure, different people hold different attitudes towards it.⑤Optimistic people believe that failure is the mother of success. They regard failure as part of their lives and insist on trying until they succeed. In contrast, once the pessimistic people fail, they feel frustrated and lose confidence. As a result, they give up trying. ⑥From my perspective, failure is not necessarily a bad thing. ⑦First, in my mind, what really counts is not failure itself, but what we can learn from it. Indeed, failure keeps our mind clear and offers pressure and power to persist, so I am not afraid of failure. ⑧Moreover, it is often suggested that if we encounter failure with courage and confidence, success is not far away.
2.Emerging from the cartoon is a
thought-provoking scene: a son told his father “Dad, I’m a bit worried about disposing of nuclear waste.”, but his smart father responded to him “If you can empty the dustbin here, you can do anything.” By this scenario, the cartoonist is revealing a truth to us that we should start doing small things before undertaking something big.
This obvious truth can never be overlooked. As an old saying goes, you cannot sweep the world before you sweep your own room. If you do anything small well, you can improve your confidence, and prove that you have your abilities improved. In our society, however, many people dream to succeed overnight. Now consider Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world. He peddled(兜售) chewing gums and orange juice when he was a little kid.
Do you aspire for success? Of course, you do, as e
veryone does. But, have you finished your work today? Have you reached your goal today? Stop imagining or worrying and just do it now. Just as what the cartoonconnotes, making a big splash (引申为:取得成功) must start from doing small things.
3.The Importance of Literature
①????????Literature is acknowledged as the most precious product of human civilization and wisdom, especially by our teachers. So they always ask their students to read as many as literary works. Just as the drawing shows above, a teacher gives a literary work to her student, saying: “Just think of it as if you’re reading a long text-message.”
②It is of great significance for us to appreciate literature due to the following reasons. Firstly, a good literature can get you to know a life experience through the eyes of someone other than you.?? ③The more experience you gain, the more knowledgeable you are. Secondly, a good literature allows you to learn about history in a
personalized way. The stories told in the works can act as mirrors and help you adjust your own behaviors. Lastly, a good literature is an effective way for relaxation. The beautiful and moving scenes shown in the literature are helpful for one’s mental health.
In short, literature is indispensable in our life.④ ??We, students, should spare more time to read more literatures.
The Overusing of Cell Phones
The thought-provoking drawing mirrors a
common phenomenon of overusing mobile phones in contemporary society. As is subtly shown in the picture, while crossing the street, people are so much addicted to cell phones that they use walking sticks to see the road.
Nowadays, with the advancement of economy and technology, it is a plain truth that an increasing number of people overuse cell phones in daily routine. It is no doubt that indulging in mobile phones exerts a negative impact on wholesome mentality. First and foremost, overusing mobile phones is detrimental to physical health, which definitely impairs one’s eyesight. Moreover, suppose that a man is addicted to cell phones in whatever situation, it will be extremely
disadvantageous for him to concentrate on his work, learning, or even daily life. Last but not least, it is no exaggeration to say overusing cell phones imposes restrictions on the relationship among people.
From my perspective, it is absolutely
essential to take measures to change the present situation where people overuse cell phones. Consequently, there is no doubt that we should limit the excessive use of cell phones. Moreover, placing more emphasis on other entertainment such as reading and sports is also conducive to alleviating the issue.

definitely: adv.清楚地

篇五:写作My Father
My Father
My father is a typical farmer. Wearing dark color clothes, having medium height and possessing a protruding belly, he is not distinguished from other middle-aged men. Every morning he muddles with washing his face, grabs a quick bite of breakfast and hurries to work just like most men of his generation who do not care much about trifles in daily life. He would never leave you a first impressive impression for he has no distinction with your acquaintances. Maybe my father is the commonest but in my heart he is the greatest person that I’m most familiar with.
Occasionally I imagine that I had a father with large amount of wealth and worldwide fame. But soon afterwards I will mock myself for such a stupid idea, because doubt I am kissed by fortune to have the greatest man as my father. First of all, he is so lenient and devoted that I always wonder whether I could treat my child like him in the future. For example, not until the Spring Festival does he buy new clothes for himself but he never tolerates that my little brother and I wear worse than others’ children. Besides, maybe you will say that he’s not very ambitious, because he works hard every day just to make sure that the family does not worry about food and clothing, the wife does not suffer after marrying him, and children can live healthily and carefreely under his protection. But, in my eyes, he is the true man, for he knows that he’s the pillar of the family and takes all responsibilities for taking good care of the whole family. He carries all burdens on himself and whatever hardships he meets, he never talks with smoking heavily alone and suffers all in silence. What’s more, perhaps my mother does perfect in taking care of my life meticulously, but still can’t replace my father, because he plays an important role in defining a clear direction for me when I’m puzzled in how to make a choice. It’s my father that brought me back when I was involved in the puppy love; it’s my father that aroused my courage when I played a disorder in the College Entrance Examination.
What impresses me most is his face. It is no longer the face of a younger man, for it is lined and grave, while it is not yet the face of an old man, for youth is still in the bright eyes and sweet smiles. He’s so kind a man and always ready to help others, no matter how tired he is or how hard the work is, he never refuses and always tries his best to help. My mother often says that he is so foolish that he is always used by others. However, he explains that everyone meets difficulties and everyone is glad to help you turn the corner when you are in trouble. Although he has a poor education, he knows a lot about life and also teaches me a lot how to be a good person.
However, he is clumsy at expressing his love to me, for he’s introversive with few words. Every time I make a telephone call to him, he just asks me whether I have enough living expenses and then gives the call to my mother directly. However, I can clearly feel that he’s very happy and excited when he hears me and I deeply understand he loves me vey much. I still remember he sends messages to ask me where I arrive when I take the train to go back home. I still remember he waits for me worriedly and looks for me eagerly at the train station. I still remember he cooks my favourite food as he’s humming a ditty. I still remember he cannot fall asleep that night before I’m leaving for school. I strongly believe that Daughter is the lover of
Father in the prior life.
He’s not only a good father, but also a good husband. He always keeps quiet when my mother lists his faults. No doubt he frequently makes mistakes: messing the kitchen after cooking meals, putting clothes at random without any order, and leaving socks alone after washing feet. I had better remain silent to clear off being partial on his side in order not to be blamed by my mother either. What’s worse, the most serious problem that makes my mother angry is that he is a heavy smoker. My mother says that just during my mother’s pregnancy, he deserts the habit of smoking but later he picks it up again, which is the main reason for being scolded. My mother complains every day that smoking captivates her husband every now and then. Without excuse for defending himself, my father cautiously apologizes and coaxes her with quite a few complimentary remarks. Honestly, he is henpecked, but his modest behaviour provokes other women’s widely and high praise, which satisfies my mother in some degree.
That’s my father himself. My father is so common that he cannot be picked out in the crowd. At the same time, he is also so great that I depend on him all the time and can’t live without him. He paves the way for me smoothly while he suffers all hardships alone in silence, for he does not prefer to put too much pressure on me and all he wants is to offer me an unrestrained childhood and a carefree attitude towards my future life in spite of the cruel society. He not only gives me life but also gives me happiness, belief and motivation of life.
