A

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don’t let jealousy spoil your relationships. Tackle it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that. Don’t approach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally conceited), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from tee swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise. Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be tinged by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.

51. According to the author, the jealousy emotion is________.

53. The underlined “it” in the first paragraph refers to________.

A. friendship B. relationship C. admiration D. jealousy

A. There’s always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

B. Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

C. You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or self development.

(SAT考题)When you first saw a piece of African art, it impressed you as a unit; you did not see it as a collection of shapes or forms. This, of course, means that the shapes and volumes within the sculpture itself were coordinated so successfully that the viewer was affected emotionally.

It is entirely valid to ask how, from a purely artistic point of view, this unity was achieved.

And we must also inquire whether there is a recurrent(周期性的) pattern or rules or a plastic language and vocabulary which is responsible for the powerful communication of emotion which the best African sculpture achieves. If there is such a pattern or rules, are these rules applied consciously or instinctively to obtain so many works of such high artistic quality?

It is obvious from the study of art history that a strong and unified emotional experience, such as the Christian belief of the Byzantine or 12th or 13th century Europe, when expressed in art forms, gave great unity, coherence(连贯性), and power to art. But such an integrated feeling was only the inspirational element for the artist, only the starting point of the creative act. The expression of this emotion and its realization in the work could be done only with discipline and thorough knowledge of the craft. And the African sculptor was a highly trained workman. He started his apprenticeship with a master when a child and he learned the tribal styles and the use of the tools and the nature of woods so thoroughly that his carving became what Boas calls “motor actor.” He carved automatically and instinctively.

The African carver followed his rules without thinking of them; indeed, they never seem to have been expressed in words. But such rules existed, for accident and coincidence cannot explain the common plastic language of African sculpture. There is too great a consistency(一致性) from one work to another. Yet, although the African, with amazing insight into art, used these rules, I am certain that he was not conscious of them. This is the great mystery of such a traditional art: talent, or the ability certain people have, without conscious effort, to follow the rules which later the analyst can discover only from the work of art which has already been created.

67. The author is primarily concerned with_________________.

A. discussing how African sculptors achieved their effects.

B. listing the rules followed in African art.

C. expressing the beauty of African art.

D. integrating emotion and realization

68. According to the passage, one of the outstanding features of African sculpture is

A. its subject matterB. the feelings it arouses

C. the training of the artistsD. its strangeness

69. According to the information in the passage, an African carver can best compared to a_____.

A. chef following a recipe

B. fluent speaker of English who is just beginning to study French

C. writer who is grammatically expert but stylistically uncreative

D. concert pianist performing a well-rehearsed concerto (协奏曲).

70. Which of the following titles best summarizes the content of the passage?

A. The History of African Sculpture

B. How African Art Achieves Unity

C. Analyzing African Art

D. The Unconscious Rules of African art.

Malaria is one of the deadliest global diseases, particularly in Africa. For years, researchers

have been working to develop a vaccine against it.

The World Health Organization says the number of people who died of malaria has fallen by twenty-five percent since 2000. Yet the disease killed about six hundred fifty-five thousand people in 2010. Scientists say malaria-carrying mosquitoes cannot travel far on their own. But the insects can, and to, catch rides in the belongings of people who travel. Malaria also can be spread by people who come from an area with large numbers of malaria cases. They may show no signs of having the disease themselves.

That is what Harvard University researchers discovered in Kenya. They found that the disease mainly spreads east from the country's Lake Victoria area with people who travel to the capital, Nairobi. The finding was based on the mobile phone records of fifteen million Kenyans. Caroline Buckee is an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Harvard school. She says one of the first steps in stopping malaria is to learn how human travel might be adding to its spread. She says it has been difficult to follow large population movements with methods like government survey of a population.

“But mobile phones offer a really unique way, on an unprecedented range to understand how a whole population is moving around.”

In Kenya, the researchers guessed the distance and length of each phone user's trip away from home. This information was based on messages to and from the mobile phone carrier's twelve(来自:WWw.zW2.CN 爱作文网) thousand transmission towers. The researchers then compared that information to a map showing reports of malaria in different parts of the country. The researchers guessed each user's probability of being infected in a given area. They also guessed the likelihood that a visitor to that area would become infected. The result was a picture showing malaria transmission routes starting in Lake Victoria. Caroline Buckee says such evidence could influence malaria control efforts.

“One thing that you could consider is sending text messages to people coming to high risk cell towers, for example, reminding them to use a bed net. And I think those types of approaches are simple but they would hopefully target people who have no symptoms and awareness of carrying parasites(寄生物).”

She also says researchers are investigation using mobile phone records in other areas to help identify malaria transmission routes.

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying "Learning is a daily experience and a lifetime mission." You can cite examples to illustrate the importance of lifelong learning“. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

Learning is a daily experience and lifetime mission.

Undoubtedly, learning is a daily experience and lifetime mission. For instance, Madam Curie, who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity and became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, was known for her persistence in learning.

Several reasons, both social and individual, could account for the importance of constant learning. Firstly, in an age of ruthless and relentless competition, only by learning constantly can we bring our potential and ability into full play and catch up with the times. Secondly, learning does not only help us acquire knowledge, but also eiches our lives and broadens our horizons. Thirdly, science and technology change with each passing day. Without constant learning, it would be impossible for us to update our knowledge.

Accordingly, it is constant learning that really matters in achieving success in modern society. In my humble opinion, it is high time that parents and teachers made joint efforts to encourage children to read more books instead of playing computer games all day.

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying "Listening is more important than talking." You can cite examples to illustrate the importance of paying attention to others' opinions. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

Listening is more important than talking

It is no exaggeration to say that listening is more important than talking. For instance, without listening, a baby won’t know how to speak; without enough listening, we cannot speak English fluently; without listening carefully in classroom, we cannot follow our teachers. There are several reasons to account for the importance of listening. First and foremost, only by listening to others carefully can we understand their points of views. Secondly, more listening can not only broaden our horizons, but also helps us absorb others’ wisdom. Last but not least, listening is an input and talking is an output. It is unwise to voice our opinions in those topics that we are unfamiliar with.

As an old Chinese old saying goes, silence is gold. Therefore, in my humble opinion, it is of great significance for us to spend more time in listening instead of rushing to speak.

For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying "Never go out there to see what happens, go out there to make things happen." You can cite examples to illustrate the importance of being participants rather than mere onlookers in life. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

Never go out there to see what happens, go out there to make something happen

There is no doubt that we should never go out there to see what happens; instead, we should take actions to make things happen. A telling example is Youyou Tu. She and her colleagues made 380 extracts from 2,00 herbs before they finally succeeded in discovering the pure substance qinghaosu, which can be used to treat malaria. As we all know, there were numerous scientists who wanted to find this substance, but it was her firm actions that made her the first Chinese Nobel laureate in medicine.

Why?Reasons are quite simple and can be listed as follows. To begin with, only by taking actions can we find the best way to solve those problems we are facing, but as a bystander, we can learn nothing meaningful. In addition, in an age full of ruthless and relentless competitions, without taking actions to make things happen, we are bound to lose those valuable opportunities. For instance, if Apple had just gone out there to see what happens in mobile phones, it could not have presented the amazing product, iPhone, to us.

Accordingly, we college students should not just be a watcher but a doer. In my humble opinion, we can start from applying what we have learned into practice.

As is shown above, in the middle of the first picture sit a father and his son, with father asking his son to work hard on the assignment while the father is watching TV himself. By contrast, in the middle of the other picture, the father is working with his son and setting a good model. If posted on the Weibo, this picture will draw a lot of attention because the words below the picture are really sparking and refreshing: being the model is better than giving the instruction.

The picture demonstrates that nothing can be compared with setting an example when it comes to the cultivation of individual characteristics. To be sure, being the model of the child will help children gain fair returns, favorable positions or even fantastic feats in the future. (Put it another way, the absence of a good example will definitely lead to one’s poor performance and lower achievement.) Take Youyou Tu, the first Chinese Nobel laureate in natural science, for example. On the road to discover a cure for malaria, she has tried and failed countless times, but with the guidance of many senior scientists, she finally found the medicine and saved millions of lives.

The picture, to some degree, makes us reflect the conventional way of education. As we all know, the power of model will inspire us to transform our aspirations from a state of potentiality into one of reality. So, from my personal perspective, due attention to the change of education method should be attached by individuals and even the whole society.
