Hiroshima—the “Liveliest” City in Japan

After learning this article, we can know that this is a feature story or simply a feature, a type of journalist writing. Feature story as well as the news story may appear at the newspaper. But there are some differences between the news story and the feature story. The most obvious difference is the feature story covers a selected issue, and the news story which must be objective and timely. Feature story takes more time to write and usually longer and express a point of view.

It is not difficult for us to find that there are some characteristics in the feature story which we have learned. First of all, as for the title, the author skillfully use the word “Liveliest” to describe the city which had been atomized, which seems to be irony and contrast to the reality. But actually, it was this word creates suspense to hold the reader’s attention and make them have the interest to read the story from beginning to the end. In addition, the author did not used the standard way to describe the beginning by narrating 5Ws, who, when, where, and why. By contrast, the author chosen something interesting to write about and a unique angle to present the story, which not only make the story more entertaining but also help the author express his personal opinions and feelings naturally. Thirdly, the author used the first-person narrative voice throughout the story, which made the story more authentic and infectious.

Meanwhile, look at the whole story, we can find that the story is mainly divided into three parts. The first part mainly tells us about the writer’s arrival at Hiroshima. And he expressed his emotions about the city and his attitude toward the atomic bomb through these sentences, “I had a slump in my throat and lots of sad thoughts on my mind,” and the question he asked “Was I not at the scene of the crime?” The second part is tells that the reception by the city mayor. And the writer expected the mayor can talk about the atomic bomb and its tragic impact. To his great surprise, the mayor referred to Hiroshima at the “liveliest” city in Japan.” The third part is tells us that the writer’s visit to the atomic ward in the hospital with many questions. After his visiting, he come a conclusion that the Hiroshima is the liveliest city in Japan.

In a word, the word “liveliest” is the main idea of the story, for it reflects the values and national character of Japanese.

My Third Year’s Resolution

Blowing a long whistle, my train finally moved out and began its journey. I clasped my knees with two hands in the seat, enjoying the sceneries as I always did. The sceneries outside the window kept passing from

me and then quickly disappeared, which just like the flashes of the past.

Looking back the 23 years, I spent almost two thirds of time on school and learnt the knowledge necessary for soul cultivation and intellectual development. Luckily, the hard work had been rewarded. I was eolled by Zhejiang Normal University. It was as if a small fish eventually got an opportunity to jump out of the small pond and to swim in a wider, more extensive river, where there are various kinds of fishes, big or small, gentle or fierce. Ironically, all these, finishing high school, entering a famous university, then finding a secure job, marrying a good man, are the traditional thoughts my parents instilled in me, which I don’t want to have at all.

Suddenly, my thoughts were interrupted by the stop of the train. Some passengers had arrived at their destination and got off. However, their places were soon replaced by the new comers. I realized that just like I am not certain what will comes next, so either can I predict and foresee my future, whether it is full of obstacles and thorns or embraced with happiness and roses. I don’t care the so

called secure job and stable life, which my parents wish me to pursue. My resolution at the very moment is to out of my parents’ protection, experience and taste all the sweets and bitter, ups and downs of life on my own, for I always believe only those who is willing to take risks going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.

The train was still moving fast to its destination. I would just keep up with the train, started my mysterious and unknown journey.
