1.Bicycles,as a means of transport,are indispensable companions of most Chinese.Each Chinese family possesses at least one bicycle.China is therefore called “the Bicycle Kingdom”.The popularity of bicycles in China,I think,is mainly due to the economy of the country and its people.China,as one of the developing countries,has no financial potential to expand its roads and to manufacture so many cars to satisfy the need of so many Chinese.
Compared with cars,bicycles,however,have their own distinctive advantages.Firstly,they are very convenient.For their small size,they do not need special parking space.They can be parked almost everywhere.For their light weight,they can be carried upstairs and downstairs.Secondly,driven by man power,they don’t need fuel.Hence they have nothing to do with air pollution and energy crisis.Finally,as China is still a developing country,most people can afford a bicycle rather than a car.
With so many advantages,bicycles will remain to be an important means of transport in China in the many years to come.But I think with the rapid development of Chinese economy,more and more Chinese will own a car though cars will never completely substitute bicycles in the future.
2.Traffic and Population
In many cities,traffic is overcrowded in the rush hours.Cars running on roads may even move more slowly than people walking on sidewalks,Due to the heavy traffic people have to spend more time on their way home or to work and even might be involved in an accident sometimes.
In recent years,with the growth of family incomet more and more people are able to afford private cars,but the roads are as narrow as ever.What's more,the population increases too quickly,while the building of cities is too slow.This contradiction results in the traffic congestion.
The government attaches great importance to the probiems.It has made great efforts to control the population inerease,widen the roads and solve the traffic problems.
3.In ancient times,transportation was very inconvenient.That’s why the attendants of Lady Yang Yuhuan had to spend several days bringing her favorite litchi from the South to Xi’an.Now,however,it only takes two or three hours for delivery by plane.Modern transportation seems to have shortened the distance.
Owing to the convenience of modern transportation,people make contact with each other more frequently.They no longer regard a foreigner on the street as a monster.Besides,people of different nationalities are getting to know and understand each other better.
To sum up,with more and more advanced means of transportation,and more and more frequent contact among distant people,the world tends to be like one big family.No wonder that most of us feel that the world is getting smaller and smaller.
