Steel slag is aby-product of the steel-making process, and until the 20th century, had beenlargely considered a waste material. Traditionally, they would be transportedout of the steel mills and deposited into storing yards, farmland, or siltedrivers. Eventually, the disposal options will be exhausted, necessitating thecreation of new facilities or acquisition of new land to accommodate the expandingsteel industry. It is estimated that a total of 15 tons of iron and steel slagwas produced in 2010, with production having been as high as 22 tons in 2005. Althoughsteel slag production has been recently been declining due to the lack of newconstruction activity (and therefore the idling of steel mills), the continuedmanufacture is virtually assured so long as steel remains a staple material inbuilding design.
Ferrous slagtypes have been used in the past as aggregate in asphaltic concrete roads, butdemand for steel slag has been unenthusiastic due to several factors steel slagin construction is primarily governed by the State and Federal legislatures, which have trouble gaining funding .The major funding program for slag is theTransportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), but the effects ofTEA-21 on slag consumption levels remained muted. Additionally,environmentally-conscious interests are more concerned with the improvement ofthe products rather than the wasted by-products .There is currently nonationwide standard for steel slag in concrete structural design.
