the 1980's.Our method should work so long as we measure dependence in a country where financial constraints are thought to be small (so that we measure demand not supply).The only other country we have detailed data on flow of funds for is Canada.Canada is very different from the United States along important dimensions.Its banking system is more concentrated as is corporate ownership,and the composition of its industries is different.Nevertheless,the correlation between dependence measured in the United States and dependence measured in Canada is 0.77.As the third column of Table 7 shows,the coefficient estimate when dependence is measured using Canadian data is highly significant.What is especially interesting both in this table and Table 4 is that the economic magnitude of the interaction effect is generally similar despite variation in the measure of dependence and development used.
