5.BT research for Linux-based mobile devices
5.1 Previous CTAA research activity
The convergent terminals and applications (CTAA) research
theme,within BT’s Research and Venturing organisation,
investigates emerging trends in the entire device ecosystem
— including components,hardware and software issues for
future mobile devices,as enablers for future service
offerings.Previous activities within the CTAA research theme
have involved the development of proof of concept (PoC)
demonstrators for innovative service concepts using mobile
devices running Symbian or Windows OSs.Application/
service development on mobile devices requires access to
software development kits (SDKs) which are usually
obtained by subscribing to appropriate developer programs,
e.g.Symbian Developer Program,Microsoft Developer
Network,etc,related to the device OS.
5.2 Enablers for Linux-based mobile device
research
New challenges are presented when pursuing similar
research activities for Linux-based mobile devices.There is
no such thing as a single standard Linux OS (let alone one for
mobile devices),only a large number of different Linux
distributions.Many ODM/OEMs appear to have chosen
commercially available embedded Linux distributions for
their mobile handset products.Some ODMs/OEMs have
used their own Linux distributions developed in-house.A
number of different commercially available application
framework SDKs can be chosen in conjunction with a
number of different (embedded) Linux distributions,leading
to a confusingly rich set of possible configurations.
Such research activity naturally requires the availability
of a number of mobile phone devices (or failing that a
developer’s reference design implementation) running an
embedded Linux distribution.To investigate FMC service
scenarios dual-mode (GSM and Wi-Fi equipped) mobile
devices are a must.The mobile device OS needs to have
some basic initial capabilities,for example to be able to
make GSM phone calls,have driver support for a Wi-Fi
interface and support a basic set of applications.
Additionally the mobile device needs to be ‘open’ rather
than ‘locked-down’,
so that new applications can be
programmed and loaded on to the device.This may require
special co-operation from a device manufacturer or mobile
phone chipset manufacturer.An off-the-shelf,Linux-based,
mobile device is likely to be locked down for reasons of
device stability or even legality.Software requirements
include an SDK from the mobile device manufacturer which
includes cross-compilation tools,debuggers,etc,plus a
means to load new applications on to the device.
Furthermore,the SDK should include reusable component
libraries which support application development,e.g.GUI,
multimedia capabilities,SIP stack,codecs.
