Scientific Research and discoveries have brought about wholesale changes in the way we live and think in the 20th century.Change has come about at a ferocious pace,bringing mind-boggling new power to humanity and provoking both hope and fear.
Only in this century did scientific progress bring humanity face to face with the power to destroy itself entirely.Never before could nations launch massive attacks from a distance,risking the lives of no more than a handful of their own soldiers.Never before could a war between two groups or nations lead to the annihilation of the entire human race.
However,it was in this same century that technology -- the material fruit of scientific research -- helped double our species' average lifespan and,in many parts of the world,made unprecedented levels of health,comfort and opportunity possible."Technology has two faces:one that is full of promise,and one that can discourage and defeat us.We dispose of a staggering amount of physical power,but that,surely,is a challenge to be wise,not an invitation to despair," wrote Harvard University professor Emmanuel Mesthene,in 1967.
In the early 1900's,excitement about science grew,with the introduction of the quantum theory in 1900 by German physicist Max Planck and another German physicist,Albert Einstein,presented his theory of relativity about time and space in 1905.US biologist Thomas Morgan showed in 1910 that genes,ordered along chromosomes,are the units of heredity.Niels Bohr applied quantum theory to atomic structure,in 1913,yielding a basic model for the atom that is still in use today.
However,by the 1950's,the world had experienced two world wars and showed how violent humanity could be.With the first controlled nuclear reaction taking place in 1942,the Unite Stated unleashed the first two atomic bomb attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Although many of people who experienced those bombings died on impact,there were also several hundred thousand people survived and later died from radiation sickness.
Another amazing breakthrough came in 1957 with the space race.The first to break ahead of the pack in this race was the former Soviet Union.Soon after,the United States entered the fray,bringing about decades of launches into space,the first astronauts to land on the moon and countless information about space that previously hadn't been available.However,so too came the nuclear race between the superpowers.Again,the two biggest players in this contest were the Soviet Union and the United States.People throughout the 70's and 80's woke up every day in fear that a nuclear war might commence.The 90's have brought about a more positive outlook for some,with the Soviet Union being defeated by the Muslims in Afghanistan and watching their economic situation slowly crumble.Now,only one superpower remains.Today,the world focuses more on the globalization of its territories than of fighting wars.Most of the threats to western powers have today been defeated,leaving only a "world-view" left to implement.
Scientifically,the most groundbreaking research and discovery in the 20th century is that of genetic engineering.When a team of Swiss and US researchers used enzymes to cut and splice genes,a feat for which they shared a Nobel Prize in 1978,the new field -- and lucrative business -- of genetic engineering was born.Rapid breakthroughs since then eventually led up to the first cloning of a mammal -- a sheep named "Dolly" -- in 1996.
Genetic engineering has offered scientists a powerful tool for creating new and improved crops,livestock and medicines.But it also holds out the possibility of tailoring other living organisms,including human beings,to serve specific tasks -- a scenario that raises profound ethical concerns.
However,as we move into the 21st century,many question remain.Will humanity be able to deal with all these powerful tools?Do we have the ability to balance it with our limited understanding?Perhaps Mesthene was right to warn,"More power and more choice and more freedom require more wisdom,if they are to add up to more humanity." But whether the advance of science is used for good or evil -- or both -- there is no question it will continue."Humanity's deepest desire for knowledge is justification enough for our continuing quest," according to the renowned British physicist and author,Stephen Hawking."Ever since the dawn of civilization,people have craved an understanding of the underlying order in the world ...And our goal is nothing less than a complete description of the universe we live in."
