By drawing on interviews with positive psychologists specializing from neuropsychology to behavioral science, backed up with typical real stories from around the world at both personal level and international level, the documentary film “Happy” aimed at showcasing the public about “what is happiness” and “how to pursue happiness” from a scientific perspective.Generally speaking,it is an innovative and inspirational film,in that it successfully integrated scientific research findings of positive psychology into mundane entertainment, and informed several heating topics in the field, including flow, hedonic treadmill, intrinsic and extrinsic goals, social support, wellness, gratitude, religion, relation to nature, meditation, altruism, etc. However, some limitations of this film deserve mentioning.First, the film kind of narrowed the scope of topics in positive psychology by especially emphasizing positive emotion.Actually, positive psychology taps upon much beyond the so-called hedonic happiness. In a larger sense, positive psychology also covers eudaimonic happiness (Peterson,2006),such as a sense of meaning (Peterson,Park,& Seligman,2005) and the experience of vital engagement (Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi,2003),and many other topics as long as they are positive to individuals and our society - identifying and cultivating strengths and virtues, developing interests, competence and talents, being optimistic, improving productivity and efficiency at work and learning, and enabling institutions,to name a few.Second, the film took too much proportion in showing how different means help generate pleasures, but devoted little proportion in presenting means to other more serious and meaningful positive experiences. This, together with its already narrowed scope, could become misleading to the public that happiness or enjoying a good life equals to always having a big smile on the face, being surrounded by a bunch of joyful people,or making joyful laughter. In this sense, the film’s understanding of happiness was biased, maybe by the value of American culture.Actually, happiness could be something mild and introverted, such as content, satisfaction, tranquility, elevation or self-esteem.These positive experiences are equally,if not even more, powerful in contributing to a life worth living.
