My father is a serious man of medium size. In many people’s eyes, Father seems to be a very ordinary person. But I think he is quite extraordinary.
He had a great love of his career and seldom enjoyed leisure with other colleagues. Before he retired, my father was a surgeon. He worked very hard in the hospital all the year around. He usually worked from dawn till dusk every day and even till midnight when there were some emergencies. Besides, he is strong-mined. Although there are a lot of difficulties to overcome, he never lets the problems defeat him. Finally, his determination and hard work paid off. As a reliable and responsible doctor, he was loved and respected by both his patients and co-workers.
Without doubt, my father has set me a good example and plays an important role in my life. Now, I feel lucky that he is always there at the time of need.
B
Mary, my true friend, is a tall and beautiful girl, whose eyes are always full of wisdom.
She is very warm-hearted. She is always trying to help people with difficulties. One day, I hurt my leg carelessly. At once, she took me to hospital and paid the fees with her own savings. Besides, she is easygoing. She is always getting along well with her friends and very popular with her classmates. Aside from these, she is curious about nature, everything from plants to insects. She would turn over stones to look at the little creatures there. One of her articles about insects was published in our local newspaper.
In brief, it is Mary that makes me experience such true friendship and arouses my interest in nature.

W: Has Victor always been a taxi driver?
M: No. He’s been a taxi driver since he settled down in this country. Before that, he was a designer.
Text 2
M: That’s a good point. … Other jobs?
W: Farmers. As I see it, they need to be patient and know a lot about animal biology.
M: Also, the weather is hard on farmers but they must never give up.
W: Right. I’d like to be a cook. Cooks need to be creative and must also know their way around a kitchen.
Text 3
M: Hello! May I speak to Mrs. Arnold?
W: Speaking.
M: This is Sparkle Company. You are one of the lucky housewives chosen to receive our free soap.
W: That's very nice of you.

W: I see that you’re in your last year at school.
M: Yes, I’m doing my “A” levels this summer. I hope to go to a university to study civil engineering.
W: So why do you want to work with us at Camp Elizabeth?
M: Well, I enjoy working with children and I’d like to get some more work experience.
Text 5
W: Jack, what kind of school do you study in?
M: I guess it is traditional. There are a lot of rules. We have to put up our hands and stand straight to answer the teacher’s questions. Also we have a lot of homework to do after school.
W: Do you like your school?
M: Well. It’s hard to say. It was founded in 1896 and it has a good reputation. We have excellent teachers. But sometimes, it is too strict and stressful.
W: That’s very interesting.
ext 6
M: Boston Police Service, What’s your emergency?
W: This is Ms Smith. My daughter is missing. I can’t contact her.
M: How long has she been lost?
W: She usually comes back home at 5 p.m. after school. Now it’s already 10 p.m.
M: How old is she?
W: 13 years old.
M: Can you describe her?
W: She’s a tall lovely girl with blond hair.
M: Is her hair long or short?
W: About shoulder-length.
M: I see. Can you tell us anything else? What is she wearing, for example?
W: Yes, I can, actually. She’s wearing an open-necked shirt and white shorts.
M: Would you please mail a photo of her?
W: Sure. What’s the address?
M: www. Bostonpolice.gov. That is: w-w-w. b-o-s-t-o-n-p-o-l-i-c-e.g-o-v.
W: Thanks.
W: Thank you for calling. We’ll try to find her.
Text 7
M: Hi, Jane. It’s nice to see you again. I heard you went to the US during the vacation.
W: Yes. I went to New York to attend a summer course in English.
M: Wow. You are lucky. How long did you stay there?
W: About 50 days. I went there on July 5th and came back on August 25th.
M: Where did you live in New York?
W: Oh, I lived with an American family, the Smiths. They are very kind people. And, living in their house, I could speak English with them every day. Besides, I did not need to worry about my daily three meals. They looked after that.
M: How nice! And how about the course?
W: The course was also very good. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English. One interesting thing I found is that the American classes are different from our classes here because they are very free. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. And you are welcome to share your ideas with the class. I really like that kind of class.
M: How interesting! Maybe our teacher should try that.
Text 8 (W)
Many years ago, I was driving to my parents’ home for Christmas. I stopped at a station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register, I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They took me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote them a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a present with a note from them, saying that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that a car shop was right next door. I walked over and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
“Thank you” ---two powerful words. They’re easy to say but mean so much.
