INTO与ONTO 本文首发于河南大学《中学英语园地》1987年初中版7~8期 初中英语课本第三册第11课（p.98）上有这么一句： They go into a shop for clothes. 他们走进一家商店买衣服。 初中英语课本第四册第2课（p.18）上另有这么一句： “Good,”the monkey came down and jumped onto the crocodile’s back. “好，”猴子爬下来，跳到了鳄鱼的背上。 这两句包含两个形态类似的介词—— into和onto。它们均属复合介词，表示动态含义：into作“到……里（面）去”解；onto作“到……上（面）去”解。原先它们都是分开写的，至今英国英语里仍多习惯于把onto分开写。 那么，介词in与into，on与onto有何区别呢？ 1. in及on一般表示静态位置，即“在……里（面）”及“在……上（面）”；而into及onto则几乎总是表示动态位移，即“到……里（面）去”及“到……上（面）去”。例如： He came into the room and sat in the chair. 他走进房里，坐在椅子上。 Tom jumped onto the table and now he is standing on it. 汤姆跳到桌子上，现在他正站在那上面。 2. in及on有时与一些终止性动词连用，也可表示动态位移。这时，in大致与into同义，on大致与onto同义。例如： He put his hands in / into his pockets. 他把双手插入衣袋。 Mary fell in / into the hole. 玛丽掉进那坑里。 My brother got on / onto the horse at last. 我哥哥终于骑上了那匹马。 We all climbed on / onto the roof. 我们全都爬上了屋顶。 但从观念上分析，两者仍有细微之别：用in或on似侧重于“动后之静”的动态结果；而用into或onto则似更侧重于“由此及彼”的动态过程。 3. 介词in和on不可与come，go等动词连用以表示动态含义。如可以说： I came into the garden. 我走进花园。 She went onto the bank. 她走上堤岸。 但不可以说： *I came in the garden. *She went on the bank. 提醒大家注意，在come in或go on等成语性动词短语中，in与on均属副词，并非介词。例如： The news came in to us. 消息传到了我们这里。 We must go on to the next village. 我们必须继续走到下一个村子去。
