可是为什么不能选B呢,不可以看成是不定式作目的状语吗?
另:school damaged by.中的damaged的用法?是过去分词作定语吗?为什么它可以省略which was?

你的理解本来也是正确的,但是你可能没注意到在Wenchuan的后面有一个小小的逗号,你不要小瞧了它,有了它就只能是现在分词作状语,而不能是不定式作状语表目的了.如果去掉它,就选B.
damaged by...是如你所说,过去分词作定语,表示被动.不是省略了which was,而是可以用which was引导的定语从句替换damaged by这个过去分词作定语的结构.也就是说2个结构在这里都是正确的.
选A是因为 enabling the students to return to their classrooms是结果状语, 那个退休男人捐钱给学校, 才使得学生能重返课堂, 是一种主动的关系, 所以是加ing而不是ed。
不选D是因为,做目的状语的话, 一般没有用逗号隔开的, 比如说, He raised his voice to make himself heard...
