The play tells a story that happens in Italy. A moneyless young Venetian, Bassanio, is making preparations to propose to Portia, a rich beauty of Belmont. He needs money and appeals to his friend Antonio, a merchant of Venice, for help. But Antonio?s money is invested in ships at sea. To help Bassanio in his courtship, he borrows money from Shylock the Jewish usurer. Shylock, who has been insulted by Antonio and other Christians, however, agrees to lend the money on the condition that if the loan is not paid in time, he may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio?s body. With this money, Bassanio goes to Belmont and succeed in the marriage with Portia. But news comes that Antonio?s ship sank and can?t return on time so he cannot pay the loan. Shylock demands his pound of flesh. The case is brought before the court. Antonio is in danger. At the critical moment, a young doctor of law arrives at the court. He appeals to Shylock for mercy with a moving speech, but in vain. Then the doctor admits the validity of Shylock?s claim, but warns him, under pain of death, that he must fulfill the every letter of his bond, taking no more and no less than one pound of flesh, and spilling no drop of blood. Seeing himself thus cornered, the Jew has no choice but to obey the verdict of the court. To everyone?s surprise, the young doctor of law who saves the life of Antonio is Portia in disguise. Finally they live together happily. The story has a happy ending in theory. But I don?t think the end is really happy and is a kind of “grave comedy”.

In this single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a natural born monster. In one of Shakespeare?s most famous monologues, for example, Shylock argues that Jews are humans and calls his quest for vengeance the product of lessons taught to him by the cruelty of Venetian citizens. On the other hand, Shylock?s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs done to him by murdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light. Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure. But I think Shylock suffers much discrimination for he is a Jew. It?s unfair. All men were born equally.

We can learn much from the play. Money is important, but there are many far more important things in this world. Do not be fooled by the surface. In our real live we should threat everyone equally and do not have color vision to look at other people. And when we meet with unexpected difficulties, we should keep calm and solve it skillfully just as Portia does......

The Merchant of Venice’ report

I love this story very much. This book is written by William Shakespeare, from Canada.

This story was happened in Venice. It was about two moneylenders, Shylock and Antonio. They hated each other very much because Shylock always got a lot of rent from other people, but Antonio didn’t. So people did not borrow money from Shylock. And Shylock and Antonio always had an argument when they met each other.

Antonio had a very good friend .His name was

Bassanio. He always borrowed some money from Antonio. And Antonio never refused to lend him. Bassanio loved Portia, and he wants to send her a gift, but he didn’t have any money, so he wants to borrow money from Antonio. But Antonio didn’t have money, too. So he decided to borrow money from Shylock. And Shylock was very happy that he had a very good plan to kill Antonio. He wanted a pond of meat from Antonio if he didn’t pay the money on time, but he didn’t need to pay any rents.

But on that day Antonio couldn’t pay the money because his ship was broken and sank into the sea. So according to the contract, Antonio should give Shylock a pound of meat

from his body. All the people in the town came to the court and said to Shylock don’t kill Antonio. But Shylock didn’t agree, he still wanted to kill Antonio and don’t want any money. Bassanio wanted to save him, but no matter how hard he try, Shylock didn’t want the money. So he wanted Portia to help him. And she wrote letters to a lawyer, and she got a way to save Antonio. So she made herself like a man and went to the court. And at last Shylock didn’t kill Antonio and even lost all his money. At last, Portia, Bassanio and Antonio lived happily forever. I think Antonio is very kind. He likes to help others even he might be killed. But how about us ? When your classmates need your help, will you help them? When your workmates need your help, will you help them? When strangers need your help, will you help them? When the poor need your help, will you give them some money? Some people may not. But you know, if you are the one who need help, but all the other people don’t give you a hand, what will you think? Will you be sad or angry? Then think about them! What will they think? You might think the poor are not really poor. There might be some people who cheat the others, but there are still many people who really need our help or money to live. So I think

we still need to help them.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. But I’ll say, whatever the person who is, we still need to try our best to give them a hand . So do your best to help others!

A Reading Report on The Merchant of Venice

After reading The Merchant of Venice, I have a deeply understanding of Shakespeare and his works, especially The Merchant of Venice, next, I will make a report of The Merchant of Venice according to what I understand.

In my reporting, I will introduce the contribution of Shakespeare, the brief introduction of The Merchant of Venice, the psychological study of different characters in the plot, and the comments of the whole reporting.

William shakespeare Among the greatest English authors, William Shakespeare is one of the rare geniuses of mankind who have become landmarks in the history of world culture. The works of William Shakespeare are a great landmark in the history of the world literature for he was one of the first founders of realism, a masterhand at realistic portrayal of human characters and relations. William Shakespeare is one of the most remarkable playwrights and poets the world has ever known. 1.The following aspects are his art of creation:1).His major characters are neither merely individual one nor type ones, that is, each characters not only has his or her own personalities, but share features with others. 2).Widely using the psychoanalytical approach, he shows the characters’ inner mind

comepletely. 3).He seldom invents his own plots; instead, he borrows them from some old plays or storybooks, or from ancient Greek and Roman sources. 4).In his writing, disguise is also an important device to creat dramatic irony, usually with woman as man.

5).He often wrote skillfully in different poetic forms, like sonnet, the blank verse, and the rhymed couplet. 2.The main theme in Shakespeare’s play: 1).Three categories: comedies, tragedies and history plays. 2). His history plays are mainly written under the principle that national unity under a mighty and just sovereign is a necessity.3). In his romantic comedies, he takes an optimistic attitude towards love, friendship and youth. 4).His tragedies often portray some noble hero who faces the injustice of human life and is caught in a difficult situation whose fate is closely connected with the fate of whose nation, The heros have some weakness in their characters, which finally lead to their tragic falls. 3. General Comments on Shakespeare: Shakespeare has his progressive siginificance, but he also has the limitations of his age and his own social station. In terms of current people’s eyes, he really made a great contribution to the literature. It is hard to measure his effects in drama and poetry. To sum up, he is a great writer.

The Merchant of Venice: 1. The Brief Introduction: it is well-known that The Merchant of Venice is one of the Shakespeare’s

famous comedies wrote in his early time. Its theme is to praise the humans’ good qualities-kindness, friendship and love. This drama not only shows the contradiction between bourgeois and usurer at the beginning of the Capitalist society, but tells us the writer’s humanism ideas towards the money, law and religion at that time.(Humanism: the main distinguishing feature of that period, also the brightness characteristic which is shown from the important role in this play.

) In this article, the writer use the method of psychological study of characters as well as comparason to analysize each charactor in this play, showing the profound atmosphere of the humanism at the beginning of bourgeoism. It expresses the writer’s thinking of current society and people’s life, at the same time, he puts his ideal dream in his play. In this play, the writer criticizes Shylock, the typical role of the Capitalist society, while the writer gives the ideal elements of humanism to Portia, a woman with the beauty both in her appearance and her inner heart. In such a way, the play leave the impression that women make a breakthrough in their rights, equality and recognization. In the process of liberating, women play a very important role.

2.Plot: Bassanio fall in love with Portia, but he has nothing else, so he turn to his friend Antonio. Antonio would like to help

Bassanio, but he has no money at hand, so he borrows money from Shylock on one condition that Antonio must return the money on time, or he will lose one pound of his meat. Antonio accepts, and promises that he could return, However, Antonio’s ship couldn’t return on time, so he fail to return money. Shylock hates Antonio because he always helps poor, which affects his business. So Shylock determines to kill Antonio. When they go to the court to judge Antonio’s crime, the judger has no any idea to help Antonio, at the very moment, Portia appeares as a judger, and she comes up with a good idea to help Antonio, finally she succeeds, what’s more, she gives Shylock a serious punishment for his mean and sympathylessness.

Charactors Shylock: a Jewish usurer, he is a typical tragic-comic character in the play, because he accumulates as much wealth as he can and even his daughter has no right to use one of his money. He is also cruel, for he would rather to kill Antonio than accept the three times’ money. On the other hand, he is also a tragic figure, he can not be treated equally by the society, he must use more money to get safety, he love money, but he have to use his treasure to make sure his safe, so he wants to revenge.

Portia a typical figure of humanism, she has new knowledge, and she is smart, because she make full use of the law to help

Antonio smartly. So she has the humans’ good qualities-kindness, friendship and love. It can be said that Portia is the figure of new women, the symbol of humorous, happy, and generous, and the figure of brave shows in defending for her husband in the court. In terms of many people’s eyes, it is a complex case, while a young lady Portia can make it very easy. The reason why she is so praised is that the writer wants to puts his ideal dream on this woman.

Antonio a newly-appeared merchant in bourgeois, the writer beautifies him in the play for his friendship, his forgiveness, and his tolerance towards the Shylock’s murder as well as the death. He has the spirit of ancient Roman’s hero. After all, he has the qualities-honest, humanism.

Bassanio is willing to help others and showing sympathy to others, but he doesn’t know how to struggle with those who wants to trap him, that is, he doesn’t know how to protect himself. He shows his weakness all the time.

Comments: After reading The Merchant of Venice, I realize that though money is essential in our daily life, however, we still have many things much important than money in the world. Do not be confused by the money, and my principle with money is that money, enough is better than overflow. In our daily life, we shouldn’t judge someone by his position and money, but his
