Vera Wang, the queen of red-carpet dressing, didn’t go into the fashion business with stars in her eyes. She knew about its unattractive side, the hard work and, especially, the risks. And there were plenty of doubts along the way.

Bui every time even one person understands what she’s trying to express with a certain design, she’s reminded of the reason why she became involved in fashion, and why she’s still in it: her efforts pay off when she’s helped a woman look and feel her best.

Wang, 63, was honored for lifetime achievement by the Council of Fashion Designers of America on June, 2013 at its famous awards show, which is often called “the Oscars of fashion”.

Her hit designs include Chelsea Clinton’s crystal-waistband wedding gown in 2010.

Wang also has two lower-priced lines. She’s developed a fragrance business and home-goods collection. And she has a branded flower bouquet business.

Wang wasn’t always sure this would be her path. She studied art history at Sarah Lawrence College and was a figure skater competing for a spot on the 1968 U. S. Olympic team. Her family wasn’t supportive of fashion as a career path, and although they had some financial means, they didn’t back her. So she went to work as an editor at Vogue, and then at Ralph Lauren, before starting her company in 1990 as a bridal brand She earned fame and respect through hard work.

Her mentor(导师) described Wang as “a unique young woman filled with a rare passion for fashion”. “In all the years since, I have watched her drive, devotion and talent shape an entire world inspired by her own life--first as a bride, then as a wife and mother, but always as a strong and beautiful woman,” Lauren said.

21. What is Vera Wang's attitude towards the fashion business?

D. She became a dress designer directly after graduation.

24. Which of the following is not the reason for her success?

American English is full of colorful expressions. One such expression is to touch all bases.

There are four bases in baseball—first, second, third and home plate. Together, the bases form a diamond shape. When a baseball player hits the ball,he must run to each base—in order—and touch it with his foot. It is the only way to score a point. If the player hits the ball and fails to touch all the bases, the point will not be counted.

The importance of touching all the bases was shown at the start of the 1974 baseball season. Hank Aaron was a player with the Atlanta Braves team. He was seeking the record for hitting the most home runs. Aaron needed just one home run to equal the record held by Babe Ruth, the greatest hitter in baseball history. Aaron got that home run the very first time he had a chance to hit the ball. That gave him 714 home runs—the same as Babe Ruth.

After that day, baseball fans held their breath every time it was Hank Aaron’s turn to hit. When would he hit home run number 715?

The wait was not long. In the second week of the season, Aaron again hit the ball over the wall. He had beaten Babe Ruth’s record. But first, he had to run around the four bases. The other players on his team watched carefully to make sure he touched each one.

So, to touch all bases means to do what is necessary to complete an activity.

The expression is used in business and politics. No business deal or political campaign is really complete until you discuss all the issues involved. Or, as it is said, until you touch all bases.

A professional diplomat in reporting on negotiations with diplomats from different countries may say they “touched all bases” during many hours of talks. This means they explored all issues involved in the situation.

25. Which of the following player will score in a baseball game?

A. One who runs to the fourth base directly.

B. One who hits the ball and runs to each base in order.

C. One who hits the ball and fails to touch all the bases.

D. One who hits the ball over the wall that surrounds the playing field.

26. Why did baseball fans pay so much attention to Hank Aaron?

A. Because he was the greatest hitter in baseball history.

B. Because he would touch all the bases.

C. Because the team he was playing for was famous.

D. Because he would set a new record.

27. Which example can best explain the meaning of “to touch all bases”?

A. Politicians talk about some hot issues of the campaign.

B. A student reviews several difficult points for the exam.

C. A reporter gives readers a complete picture of an event.

D. Some businessmen discuss the important problems in the deal.

28. What’s the purpose of this passage?

A. To introduce an expression. B. To explain baseball rules.

C. To describe a baseball game. D. To tell the story of a baseball player.

Bad news travels fast--when you watch the evening news or read the morning papers, it seems that things that get the most coverage are all tragedies like wars, earthquakes, floods, fires and murders.

This is the classic rule for mass media. “They want your eyeballs and don't care how you’re feeling,” Jonah Berger, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, U.S., told The New York Times.

But with social media getting increasingly popular, information is now being spread in different ways, and researchers are discovering new rules—good news can actually spread faster and farther than disasters and other sad stories.

Berger and his colleague Katherine Milkman looked at thousands of articles on The New York Times' website and analyzed the “most e-mailed” list for six months.

One of his findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list Those stories aroused feelings of awe(敬畏) and made the readers want to share this positive emotion with others.

Besides science stories, readers were also found to be likely to share articles that were exciting or funny. “The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared,” Berger wrote in his new book. “For example, stories about newcomers falling in love with New York City,” he writes, “tended to be shared more than the death of a popular zookeeper.”

But does all this good news actually make the audience feel better? Not necessarily. According to a study by researchers at Harvard University, people tend to say more positive things about themselves when they’re talking to a bigger audience, rather than just one person, which helps explain all the perfect vacations that keep showing up on micro blogs. This, researchers found, makes people think that life is unfair and that they’re less

happy than their “friends”.

But no worries. There’s a quick and easy way to relieve the depression you get from viewing other people’s seemingly perfect lives turn on the television and watch the news. There is always someone doing worse than you are.

29. Bad news covers most papers because A. the public care for reading tragedies B. mass media want to attract the public’s attention

C. the public intend to express sympathy for victims D. mass media appeal to the public to help victims

30. Which of the following might be e-mailed most according to Berger?

A. The perfect vacation of your friend. B. The death of a popular zookeeper.

C. The story of a determined inventor. D. The flood hitting a small town.

31. We can infer from the passage that .

A. bad news always makes people sad

B. people prefer to share bad news with a bigger audience

C. people can relieve the depression by reading good news

D. good news sometimes has negative influence

32. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Good News Spreads Fast. B. Bad News Travels Fast

C. The Effect of Bad News. D. The Power of Good News

Copenhagen has been the capital of Denmark for 600 years and is also the largest city in Scandinavia, but it hasn’t let these high-ranking facts go to its urban head—the city remains a low-level approach to the modernization. From the harbor you can get a feel for the attractive “city of green spires(尖塔).” In cloudy weather, the copper-covered spires of old castles and churches lend the city a dream-like atmosphere. You’ll think you’ve stepped into a watercolor painting.

Architecturally, Copenhagen has more than its share of interesting sights, from the palace of Christiansborg Slot to the scenic tower of Vor Frelsers Kirke. The Danish capital pretty much covers all the needs of the international visitors, and does it in a typical Scandinavian way.

Copenhagen got its name from the word kben-havn, which means “merchants’ harbor”. It grew in size and importance because of its position on the body of water between Denmark and Sweden, guarding the entrance to the Baltic.

From its humble(低下的) beginnings, Copenhagen has become the largest city in Scandinavia, home to

1.5 million people. It's the seat of one of the oldest kingdoms in the world.

Over the centuries Copenhagen has suffered more than its share of disasters. In the 17th century the Swedes repeatedly besieged it, and in the 18th century it suffered the plague(瘟疫) and two destructive fires. Its last major disaster occurred in 1940 when the Nazis invaded Denmark and seized it until 1945 when the British army moved in again, this time as liberators.

Copenhagen still has some of the characteristics of a village. If you forget the suburbs, you can cover most of the central belt on foot, making it a great place to visit

33. Which aspect about the city in Paragraph 1 is the most impressive according to the writer?

A. Its modernization. B. Its cloudy weather. C. Its large size. D. Its beautiful sight.

34. Which of the following topics are mentioned in the passage?

①population ②history ③agriculture ④architecture ⑤tradition

A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ③④⑤ D. ①②⑤

35. The underlined word “besieged” in Paragraph 5 probably means .

A. helped and rescued B. built up good relations with

C. surrounded and attacked D. signed agreements with

Spring is tht best season of the year

Spring is tht best season of the year. The weather gets warmer and warmer. My clas i'amates and I took a one-day sightseeing around our city. The scene was pretty. But when we saw the rivers along our city, I felt very sorry, and thoughit a lot.

With the development of modern agriculture and industry, more and more waste water is being poured into rivers. It has caused serious pollution. The river is becoming so dirty that no living things can live in it. The river is giving off a terrible smell.

We make an urgent appeal that measures should be taken to cope with the situation. Our government should start building various facilities such as sewage treatment!plant and encourage scientists to work out more and better ways to reduce the pollution of water. Water is tho source of our lives. It is very important to protect water.

My classmates and I had an outing this spring. We had a good time. But meanwhile I noticed that water pollution in our city was becoming more and more serious.

On our way, we could see women washing clothes in the river. Litter was floating on the river. Waste water produced by a chemical factory was being discharged into the river. We did not see any fish in the river. The fiver was not so clear as before. Water quality was very bad. I am worried

about it because water is important to all living things. Man can not live without water. I hope people pay more attention to this problem, especially the government. Try to control the pollution of water as early as possible.

At last I would like to say, "To protect water is to protect life."

(How to Make Friends)

Everyone needs friends. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how can we make friends?

First, to make friends, you must be friendly to others. Smile at others and you are sure to get a smile in return. You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes. Second, friends should negotiate instead of quarrel. When you don't agree someone, please

discuss with him.

Finally, never believe in those who leave you when you are in trouble. And never leave your friend when he is in trouble. Remember, a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Friends should be faithful to each other. So long as you can put your friend's interests in front of yours, you will have a lot of good friends.

Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers.Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact, threatening our existence.

The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and for our later generations. Fortunately, more and more people have realized these problems. I hope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better.

P51 Diana’s Anniversary

It has been ten years since Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash with Dodi Al Fayed in Paris, yet she remains an iconic figure in the UK, whose image continues to dominate magazine covers and newspaper headlines.

Diana?s death triggered an outpouring of national grief and a decade of conspiracy theories, linking her death to the British security forces and even the royal family.

And she remains a media phenomenon with thousands of articles and stories appearing about her in the British press each year.

Interest in the princess is rising again as her sons, Princes William and Harry, prepare to mark the tenth anniversary of her death with a memorial service at Guard?s Chapel in London?s Wellington Barracks on Friday.

The princes are to give readings at the service, which will be attended by 500 guests, including more than 30 royals headed by the Queen, and celebrities such as Sir Elton John and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

One person who won?t be attending is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who Princess Diana famously described as “the third person” in her marriage to Prince Charles.

Camilla, who married Prince Charles in 2005, said she feared her presence at the service “could divert attention from the purpose of the occasion”.

As well as the memorial service, Diana is being remembered with a photographic exhibition documenting her life at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Even ten years on it seems Britain is unwilling to let go of “the people?s princess”, and that her enduring legacy is to maintain the fascination of the British people, and indeed the world.

The Proms was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly built Queen's Hall in London.

Together with Henry Wood, the organist, accompanist and conductor, the two man team created a particular philosophy that set the tone of the Proms in the years to come.

'I am going to run nightly concerts to train the public in easy stages,' explained Newman. 'Popular at first, gradually raising the standard until I have created a public for classical and modern music.'

From the late 1920?s the BBC has organised the Proms concerts. Since 1961 the BBC has commissioned a number of new works each season, offering Proms audiences a chance to hear the latest in musical trends from contemporary composers.

The festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year. 1996 saw the launch of Proms in the Park, where huge TV screens show the concerts to audiences in the open air. There have been special events such as 'Choral Day' (1998), and '1000 years of music in a day' (1999).

A total of ten Proms are broadcast on the BBC World Service in English on Saturdays from 1900 China time until the 8th September 2007. Try 11750 and 9740 short wave, or download the latest Prom at www.bbcworldservice.com - enjoy!

Happy Father's Day!

Father's Day is a fairly new celebration in the British calendar compared with Mother's Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long tim

The origins of the celebration are American and it was inspired by the actions of a man named William Smart. He was a veteran of the US Civil War and his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without remarrying, which was undoubtedly unusual back in those days.

His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realised when she was an adult what her father had sacrificed for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a sermon on Mother's Day. She thought there should also be a Father's Day celebration.

And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary of Sonora's father's death. Britain took the idea of Father's Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s.

Father's Day is never quite such the big commercial event that Mother's Day is, probably because it hasn't been in existence for so long. But what do British people do for Father's Day?

Well, most people would buy their fathers a card. The card would probably have a nice message in it saying what a great Dad their father is. Some people do buy presents as well.

Popular gifts for Dads are probably ties, chocolates or socks because these are things that Dads can always use even if they don't want them. In the run-up to Father's Day, or indeed Mother's Day, there will be adverts on the TV giving us ideas of CDs or gadgets we can buy. Card shops will be full of mugs or pens and similar merchandise with 'World's Greatest Dad' written on them.

Some families might do things together to celebrate Father's Day like going for a meal. As a special treat, British people might give their Dad a bit of a rest – make him a cup of tea, or even wash his car and mow the lawn to make him feel really appreciated.

Recently, I’ve been so busy with an important exam at the beginning of the new term that I failed to reply to your letter in time. As a senior III student, I had to devote most of my time to reviewing my lessons during the summer vacation. However, I still managed to spare some time to travel to several places of interest and read novels to refresh myself.

In the new term, I’ll work hard and try to make greater progress, hoping to be admitted to my dream university.

Best wishes. (105)

M: Mmm. I just enjoy my food so much. I love chips, I love cakes, I love ice cream, I love chocolate! Food is part of my life.

I need you to organize the projector that goes with the computer. You can do that with reception. And you’ll need to sort out lunch for about ten people. Yes, there’ll be ten of us.
