Apollo Robbins is a pickpocket(扒手), but he is not a normal pickpocket. He is an entertainer. Hundreds of people enjoy watching Robbins perform in shows.

Robbins began learning these skills at a very young age. His two older brothers taught him basic pick pocketing tricks. And Robbins quickly became very good stealing.

Robbins was naturally good at pick pocketing. But it took years to develop his ability to perform for other people. When he was 15, he started studying magic. As he learned about magic, he was less interested in stealing.

After seven years, he began to perform in his own shows. He now performs at events and meetings around the United States. Many magicians agree that Robbins is the best at what he does. His tricks surprise even experienced magicians!

Robbins has also worked with the scientists at Yale University in the United States. He would show his different methods of movements to people while the scientist watched how their eyes moved. They were interested in what people concentrated on. They discovered that different people reacted in the same ways.

This work is helping the scientists understand attention and human nature. Knowing how human attention works is important. It can help officials create better driving laws and road signs. It can help companies create telephones that are easier to use. It can even help office workers to manage their time better. More importantly, it can help people know how to protect themselves from pickpockets!

For Robbins, understanding human attention makes him a better magician. While performing his tricks, he can tell the crowd how he uses a person’s attention to his advantage. “A lot of magic is designed to look very beautiful. But I am trying to affect people’s minds, emotions, and ideas. My goal is not to hurt or trick them. I want to challenge the ideas they have about what is real,” he said.

21. We know from the text that Apollo Robbins _____________.

A. is an excellent magician.

B. used to steal things from others.

C. learned magic from his brothers.

D. is now a professional pickpocket.

22. The scientists at Yale University mainly studied ________________.

A. People’s interests B. people’s attention

B. Apollo Robbins’s trick D. Apollo Robbins’ movement

A. It is just as they expected.

B. It has been beneficial in many fields.

C. It has contributed to an increase in crime.

D. It is helping to solve many health problems.

24. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Robbins’ magic looks quite beautiful.

B. Robbins tries hard to trick the audience.

C. Magic won’t affect people’s attention and ideas.

D. Robbins has a great knowledge of human attention.

The college selection process is tough enough. Don’t let the myths(谣言) about college frighten you away from a college or university that might be just right for you. Year after year students settle for a second and third choice college because they listened to the half-truths for false descriptions concerning the college selection process. We want to explode these myths so you can choose the college or university that is best for you.

MYTH 1: I need to decide on my career before I can choose a college.

College is a time to explore. Except in a few specific cases, you can choose a major in your second year and still complete the degree in four years. A surprising number of students discover the field for them while taking a course they didn’t expect to like. Don’t let well-meaning friends pressure you into deciding on a major field or a career at this time. Take your time.

MYTH 2: A lot of out-of-class activities will make up for poor grades.

Admittedly, colleges consider out-of-class activities when they review an application. But colleges look at your academic performance first. Lots of out-of-class activities help only if the college already believes you can do the work. “the thicker the papers, the stupider the child” is an expression admissions counselors (招生顾问) use

when a promising student submits materials on all that they have done, but they have poor high school grades.

MYTH3: Colleges are only concerned with my academic development.

Many colleges and smaller universities pride themselves on their ability to “develop the whole person”. Some of this personal development comes from requiring a broad-based general education that contributes to your understanding of the world and our society. In some cases, personal and professional development is intentional. At these colleges, there are workshops (研讨会)open to students on time management, developing relationships, handling yourself at a job interview and your responsibilities as a citizen.

25. As for choosing the major, you should ______.

A. explore it for yourself

B. take your friends’ advice

C. choose it in the first year of college

D. decide on it before going to college

27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Students must take part in workshops in college.

B. Colleges mainly develop students’ academic ability.

C. Most students mainly develop professional skills in college.

D. Colleges attach importance to students’ all-round development.

Michael Guerreri wanted to try human growth hormones (激素) so he could look like a great wrestler (摔跤手). Joe Badalanato hoped HGH would help him become a better football player. James O’Brien figured the drug would improve his fastball.

The three 18-year-olds from Philadelphia said that they bought bottles of HGH online in the past year. Turns out, what they bought was not the real thing.

Their experiences are part of a growing trend. A national study, published Wednesday by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, finds in 2013, 11% of 3,705 American high school students reported using human growth hormones at least once, without doctors’ permission. That’s a jump form 2011 and 2012 when the number of teens using the drug was 5%.

Many products claiming (声称) to be human growth hormones are widely available on the internet. But getting real HGH—which can cost up to $1,000 for a monthly supply—isn’t that simple.

Dr. John Kolonich, a chiropractor (按摩师) in Franklinville, New Jersey, said real HGH is only injectable and also noted it is very expensive. “HGH” is not the drug of choice for a high school kid who wants to play better,” he warned.

Steve Saunders, CEO of Power Train Sports Institute, trains thousands of high school and college athletes.

“We tell all our athletes they can’t use chemicals to replace hard work and a proper nutrition plan,” Saunders said.

Parents are partly responsible for the increase of the trend. Frank Trumbetti, owner of Rock Bottom Nutrition and Fitness Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, said not only teens but also parents ask him about HGH every day. He said he threatened to call child protection services on a dad who wanted to put his 14-year-old son on human growth hormones.

“That’s just one example,” Trumbetti said. “You have some moms and dads that are afraid to have their kids take just protein powder (蛋白粉)(which is commonly used by those involved in bodybuilding and athletics). And then you have parents that are encouraging their kids to use performance-improving drugs like HGH because they think they’ll help the kid get a college scholarship.”

28. What can we infer about the three teens from Philadelphia?

A. They all were cheated.

B. They all achieved their aims.

C. They all benefited from HGH.

D. They all enjoyed their experiences.

29. What do we learn from the national study?

A. Most doctors are against using HGH.

B. It is easy for US students to get real HGH.

C. High school students are fond of online shopping.

D. The use of HGH among US teens is on the increase.

30. What is Steve Saunders’s attitude toward athletes using HGH?

A. Curious B. Unfavorable

C. Skeptical D. Uncaring

31. Frank Trumbetti provided an example of a dad who ______.

A. often called child protection service

B. forbade his kid to take protein powder

C. had no interest in bodybuilding and athletics

D. asked his kid to take performance-improving drugs

D

On an elementary school playground, hundreds of children run and jump, smiling and laughing as they play. Watching sea otters (海獭) playing in their own environment is like watching children at play. Sea otters, which are presently on the endangered species list, are a joy to watch and, fortunately, are experiencing an increase in population.

Groups of sea otters live on the shores of the North Pacific Ocean. They are seldom found far from land but spend almost their entire lives at sea. The otter has been known to dive as deep as 180 feet and stay underwater as long as four minutes. Each day the sea otter eats as much as one-fifth of its body weight in fish or shellfish.

Not only are sea otters playful, they are also amazingly resourceful. Their favorite food, abalone(鲍鱼), is protected by a thick shell sea otters are unable to break with their teeth. Sea otters use stones from the ocean floor and break the abalone open on their bellies(肚子) as they move slowly across the surface of the water on their backs, a behavior that makes them one of only a few animals on Earth, including human beings, to use tools! Their intelligence is also displayed while sleeping, in order not to move into dangerous waters, sea otters actually cover

A

I‘ve been in the taxicab business for thirty-five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxicab drivers have to be tough fellows to be able to work in New York. You‘ve got to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day these days, so people get the wrong impression that they are bad.

Actually, taxi drivers are just like other people. Most of them will behave as honest fellows. You read in the papers almost every week that a taxi driver turns in money or jewels that people leave in their cabs. If they weren‘t honest, you wouldn‘t be reading those stories in the papers.

One time in Brooklyn, I found a diamond ring in my cab. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of packages that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her. It took me almost two days to trace her down in order to return her ring to her. I didn‘t get as much as ―thank you‖. Still I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.

I was born and raised in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. Then I came to this country where I had a family and bought my own cab. Life hasn‘t been too easy at times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit put away for a rainy day.

When I started driving a cab, Park Avenue was mostly a bunch of coal yards. Hoofer‘s Brewery was right next to where the Waldorf-Astoria is now. I did pretty well, even in those days. In all my years of driving a taxicab, I have never had any trouble with the public, not even with drunks.

I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like integrity (正直), etc. But it doesn‘t make any difference what they call it; it‘s still what makes a man a good citizen. This is my code, and I try to live by.

1. Why do people think taxicab drivers are bad according to the passage?

A. They have been cheated by taxicab drivers before.

B. Taxicab drivers are dishonest.

C. Most taxicab drivers are tough fellows.

D. Some taxicab drivers did not return their lost properties.

2. How did the author return the diamond ring to the lady?

A. By giving her a call and visiting her.

B. By sending her a letter asking her to claim the ring in person.

C. By advertising in the papers.

D. By going back to where she got off and traced her down for almost 2 days.

3. The underlined phrase ―a rainy day‖ in paragraph 4 refers to ______.

A. a day when it rains

B. a time when a family has financial problems

C. a day when the author can‘t drive a taxi

D. a time when the author has trouble with drunks

4. How does the author feel as a taxicab driver?

A. Proud and satisfied. B. Annoyed and stressful.

C. Disappointed and discouraged. D. Unwilling and regretful. B

Working women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, and 51 percent of professional

workers, like doctors, lawyers, nurses and accountants, are female. While climbing the career ladder can be rewarding, it often comes with one big downside: weight gain!

New research published this week in the International Journal of Obesity shows that working women are more likely to be overweight, and the more you work, the more pounds you‘re likely to pile on. Like many women, I work... a lot! As a self-employed nutrition communications specialist, I sit at my desk, in front of a computer, for hours on end. Sitting alone is one of the worst things you can do for your health, and it‘s directly linked to being overweight and increased fatness, so the fact that women in the workforce gain weight isn‘t that surprising. If you work, you have less time to move around. Obesity(肥胖症)researchers are revealing many other ways that employment is harmful to your diet and waistline. In the International Journal of Obesity study, some 9,276 Australian women aged 45-50 had their body weight and employment status monitored for two years. Results? Those who worked more than 35 hours were likely to gain weight compared to those who worked fewer hours or were out of the workforce. What‘s more, the more hours a woman worked in a week, the more weight she gained.

The authors of the Australian study attribute weight gain among working women to inactivity, lack of time for food preparation, more use of prepared foods, high levels of stress, lack of sleep and

consuming more alcohol. I‘ll also add in travel, meals eaten out and working at night as other factors that I can find to make balancing work with a healthy diet a challenge.

5. The text above is probably taken from ______.

A. a sports report B. a fashion journal

C. a health and fitness magazine D. an advertisement post

6. A woman who works as an accountant is more likely to ______.

A. gain more weight B. have more time to move around

C. work a full time job D. keep a balanced diet

7. Which is NOT the cause of working women weight gaining according to the passage?

A. Lacking time for food preparation. B. Using more prepared food.

C. Consuming too much alcohol. D. Taking part in more activities.

8. What can be a suitable title for the test?

A. Less activity leads to fat. B. Ways of gaining weight.

C. Effects of weight gaining. D. Working women more likely pile on pounds.

There‘s a ―culture of walking and texting‖ on the Utah Valley University campus, according to

conversations with students, but that‘s not the main reason Matt Bambrough, the creative director at UVU, came up with an idea to paint a ―texting lane‖ on a staircase leading up to the Wellness Center. According to Bambrough, it‘s first and foremost a design project—the texting lane was a

tongue-in-cheek(戏谑)reference to the college-wide epidemic(流行)of kids walking around with their faces buried in their iPhones.

―You have 18–24-year-olds walking down the hall with smart phones. You‘re almost bound to run into someone somewhere; it‘s something we‘re dealing with in this day and age,‖ Bambrough said. ―But preventing collisions isn‘t the reason we did it—we did it to arouse the students‘ attention. It‘s meant to be there for people to look at and enjoy.‖

Still, when talking to Utah Valley students, it sounds like texting and walking can be quite the annoyance.

Robbie Poffenberger, an assistant news editor at the UVU Review, said that most collisions he witnesses aren‘t human-on-human; rather, it‘s generally human-on-inanimate-object. ―They walk into barriers—chairs on the side of the hallway, or railings,‖ Poffenberger said, ―I‘m sure they‘re fairly embarrassed.‖

9. What do we learn about the ―texting lane‖ from the text?

A. It is a special campus culture in Utah Valley University.

B. It is used to encourage the campus culture.

C. It is painted on a staircase leading to everywhere.

D. It is popular with students in universities.

10. According to Bambrough, ______.

A. the ―texting lane‖ is to attract students‘ attention

B. we don‘t have to face the problem in this age

C. what they did is to prevent the collisions

D. students enjoy looking at each other

11. How do students feel about texting and walking?

A. They are worried. B. They are annoyed.

C. They are puzzled. D. They are surprised.

12. What would most students run into from what Robbie said?

A. Students in the same direction. B. Teachers opposite to them.

C. Barriers on campus. D. Grass on campus.
