篇一:话题阅读 Topic 14 Weather (天气)

Topic 14 Weather (天气)

Even though New Zealand is located in the South Pacific, at times it is far from tropical! New Zealand’s weather is actually extremely — commonly described as ―four seasons in one day‖. When you are traveling in New Zealand, it is important to carry clothing to suit any weather condition, as cold mornings often turn into warm, sunny days.

Weather conditions also differ depending on

which part of the country you are in. The north of the

North Island is sub-tropical with warm wet weather.

The south of the South Island, on the other hand, is

the first port of call for Antarctic airflow. This unique

climate makes New Zealand one of the most special

and variable countries in the world — high mountains,

tropical rainforests and golden beaches, all in one

place!

Although weather conditions are variable, New

Zealand’s climate is moderate. During the winter, you

can expect highs of around 15 degrees Celsius, and

lows between 0 and 10 degrees, depending on which

part of the country you are in. In summer, expect

highs between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, and lows in

the mid teens. But the sun is extremely harsh. It is important to wear sunscreen and a hat whenever you are spending extended periods of time outdoors, no matter what time of the year or weather conditions. The sun in New Zealand can burn even on a cloudy day.

Weather is an important part of New Zealanders’ lives as many people enjoy outdoor activities, like boating and farming which rely on the weather. It is no wonder that many New Zealanders have part-time jobs as weather forecasters.

1. The underlined word ―variable‖ in the first paragraph means ―_______‖.

A. comfortable B. invariable C. suitable D. changeable

2. We can infer from the passage that _______.

A. weather conditions are almost the same all over New Zealand

B. the sun is harsh as the temperature is always very high in New Zealand

C. it is important to protect your skin even on cloudy days in New Zealand

D. the north of the South Island is the first port of call for Antarctic airflow

3. Which of the following might be the lowest and highest temperatures in winter in New Zealand in one day?

A. 8;20. B. -1;9. C. 6;14. D. -2;13.

4. After reading the passage, we know that in New Zealand, ______.

A. people always suffer greatly from heavy snows

B. many people have to take part-time jobs due to the bad weather

C. people never do outdoor sports as the weather changes too quickly

D. it is normal for travelers to take clothing for different weather conditions

An average snowstorm produces snow for two to five days. Most states of the country have received snowfall.

The snowstorm is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people in the United States every year. Many people die in traffic accidents on roads that are covered with snow or ice. Others die from being out in the cold or from heart attacks caused by extreme physical activity. In1996, a major snowstorm caused serious problems in the United States. It caused more than one hundred deaths and forced nine states to declare emergency states. Virginia was hit hardest. In some areas there, snowfalls were more than one meter deep. Several states limited driving. Most major airports were closed for at least a day or two.

People may not be able to avoid living in areas where it snows often. However, they can avoid becoming victims of winter snowstorms. It is always a good idea to keep some necessary supplies in the home before winter begins. These supplies include food, medicine, clean water and extra power supplies. People should stay in their homes until the snowstorm has passed. While removing large amounts of snow, they should stop and rest often. Difficult physical activity during removing snow can cause a heart attack.

Some drivers have the experience that they were trapped in their cars during a snowstorm. If

this happens, people should remain in or near their cars. They should tie a bright-colored object to the top of their cars to increase the chance of rescue. Inside the car, they should open a window a little for fresh air and turn on the engine for ten or fifteen minutes every hour for heat.

are famous for the tremendous amounts of snow they receive. When the snow starts to fall, people start tossing out the phrase "lake-effect snow".

Primarily a late-autumn and early-winter phenomena, lake-effect snowstorms are instigated by the movement of cold, arctic air over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes. Ideally, the temperature difference between the lake water and the overrunning air should be at least 20 degrees in order for clouds and subsequent snow to form.

As the cool air crosses the waters of Great Lakes, the lowest levels of the atmosphere begin to warm and pick up moisture. This newly warmed layer is lighter than the cold air above it, so it starts to rise. As the modified air continues to climb higher into the atmosphere, it encounters much colder temperatures.

This cooler air forces the moisture to condense into water droplets and ice crystals, forming clouds. After this process repeats itself a number of times, the cloud becomes weighed down and is forced to precipitate in the form of snow.

Out of all the meteorological factors that determine snowfall intensity, the most important might be the direction of the wind. If the wind direction is running perpendicular across the lake, there won`t be ample time for clouds to develop.

However, if the wind runs parallel to the length of the lake, clouds should form without a hitch. The longer the cold air travels over the lake, the more moisture it is able to accumulate, which in turn leads to greater snowfall totals.

The highest annual lake-effect snowfall totals are found across the U.P. of Michigan, northwestern Pennsylvania and the far southwestern and upstate sections of New York. In these locations, which are all located along the southern or eastern shores of the Great Lakes, recording over 100 inches of snow in a winter season is a common occurrence.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A. To tell how much snow the Great Lakes has.

B. To introduce the topic of the text.

C. To show when the "lake-effect snow" appears.

D. To tell what the Great Lakes are famous for.

2. Which of the following is the right order of the forming of lake-effect snow?

①Clouds form and becomes weighed down.

②The warm over the Lakes picks up moisture and rises.

③The cold, arctic air crosses the waters of Great Lakes.

④The moisture condenses into water droplets and ice crystals.

A. ②③④① B. ③②①④ C.③②④① D. ②③①④
